Thanks Dave.
I have very few files that I can test, but I can duplicate a problem on that file.
I'll see if I can track down what is wrong with it.

This suggests perhaps that the resampler is overwriting the end of its
buffer.  I'll investigate it tomorrow if nobody happens to have found
it before then!

Dave, thanks for the report.  I hope my comment and closure of your
other bug report on the tracker earlier didn't seem too rude.  For a
moment I was worried that OpenSUSE users might be about to receive a
rather unexpected and possibly unwelcome update, but I realised when
reading more closely that you were providing personal test packages
rather than repository ones and of course it's great to be getting
proper feedback at this stage so long as you're patient enough to
tolerate finding all the bugs you'll find.

It's great to get feedback from people doing packaging too.  As long as
everybody running this stuff understands its nature, I welcome all the testing
and bug reporting we can get.  There's a lot of stuff to chew through before
we're release worthy.

Annoyingly, I can't seem to reproduce the problem here (even with
exactly the same audio file).  It won't crash for me, and not even
this rather quick machine is up to running under Valgrind with JACK in
use.

Hm.

Running Svn Rev 11123 I don't get a segfault anymore, it simply refuses

Thanks Dave,
I found and fixed the problem.
That was a real kick in the butt to be offline after the 9.10 upgrade.

(I still have a scary message from NetBeans, but the debugger seems to work OK.)
I'm doing a commit now. I checked all 3 files, together with my own audio file and they all work.
Please give it another try.

I built svn 11152 but it still refuses to open any wav files, including
ones I've converted to 48000Hz with ffmpeg. I just get the following
message :

Failed to add audio file. Bad sound file
/usr/share/sounds/k3b_wait_media1.wav: Failed to convert or resample
audio file on import

Just as a data point, I'm running 11153 here, and I tried adding audio files
through the audio file manager, and dragging and dropping them out of Dolphin
onto audio tracks.

All the .ogg and .mp3 files I tried failed, but all the .wav files I tried
worked fine, including this one:

/usr/share/sounds/k3b_error1.wav: RIFF (little-endian) data, WAVE audio,
Microsoft PCM, 8 bit, mono 8000 Hz

(It's not the same file, but it has the same characteristics as the one that
failed for you.  I'm running with JACK at 48 KhZ, for reference.  Just to be
sure, I tried with wait_media.wav or whatever the exact name is, with similar
success.)

Dragging and dropping gives the same result as loading the file, same
JACK 48 KHz as well.
I'll try and debug the problem, I'm sure the k3b sound files are the
same system wide, I also can't use /usr/share/sounds/alsa/ wavs either
and I'm sure they must also be the same on all linux systems.

Ogg and mp3 importer classes are not present (or at least not
activated) yet.  They will be, though.

Dumb question perhaps, but does your Rosegarden audio file directory
(by default ~/rosegarden) exist?  I can imagine that that might cause
the failure you're seeing, as the error message for being unable to
write to it might not have been ported over yet.

Based on the results, I figured that was the case.

Easy enough to test this one, and that looks like a direct hit.  I renamed
~/rosegarden and tried the K3B files, and got the same error dialog as Dave.
I created a new one, tried the operation again, and I got

  conv-k3b_wait_media1-20091101-184020-4.wav
  conv-k3b_wait_media1-20091101-184020-4.wav.pk

in there.

So we probably just need to throw in some code to detect that the directory
doesn't exist, and then...

Well that's a little bit of an interesting one.  On the one hand, I've gotten
really big on the whole "do the thing most people will want, and don't ask"
philosophy, so I'd be inclined to just create the damn directory if it doesn't
exist, and not bother the user with a dialog.

OTOH, my ~/rosegarden is a COMPLETE fscking mess full of an unsortable amount
of random junk from using and working on Rosegarden over the years, and this
is because I never remember to change my audio path before starting a project.
It might be a good idea to do a dialog in this case.  "~/rosegarden doesn't
exist, shall I create it, or would you like to give this project a custom
audio path?"  (Not that wording, but that's the gist of it.)

It would almost be worth doing something on audio record too.  The first time
they try to record, ask for an audio path.  Most other applications I can
think of actually begin any new project this way, creating a purpose-built new
directory straight up, but with Rosegarden we can't assume a new project will
ever actually have audio until they want to record or import something.

What do you guys think?

Not so dumb question, I created ~/rosegarden and it now works. I'll
create it in the spec file meanwhile and I can close that bug.
Thanks

I think it should be created on first use and there should be a settings
option to change it. AFAIK this is the traditional behavior of applications.

It's a little more complicated than that, and worth discussing.  After many
years of running Rosegarden, I have 3.9 GB of random .wav files in
~/rosegarden, and I only have something like five complete worthwhile
projects.  What is the rest of this crap?  A whole lot of empty files from
recordings that didn't work, bad takes, and the random diamond in the rough in
the form of some lost and forgotten recording of one of my children when they
were tiny.

The biggest reason why it's such a hopeless mess is because the default audio
path is a bad design. Start a project in Ardour or LMMS, and the very first
thing you do is give it a name, and a directory gets created automatically,
and all the audio gets recorded there.

We can't quite do that, because a user might never record or import one second
of audio.  It seems like first recording is the only way to determine that a
user intends to use the audio capabilities of Rosegarden, so that's the time
to ask them to pick a directory, each and every time they start recording in a
new project.  It's bordering on annoying nag behavior though, which is why I'm
sitting on the fence.

I mean yes, obviously, just creating the default (or whatever is specified)
directory on first use is the thing one might expect here, but I'm reserved
because it makes it so easy to create a completely hopeless mismanaged mess
like the one I will never take the time to sit down and sort out.  Audio files
are a lot more complicated than images to evaluate and sort quickly, and it's
a housekeeping mess that will never get better unless I fix my own use habits
(not likely) or make Rosegarden force me to fix my use habits (which is more
attractive, but not without its own drawbacks).

I guess in a way this hearkens back to that mythical first-time build-a-
composition dialog we've talked about for years, but never made any progress
toward implementing.

Hrm.  Maybe it's time.

I think this should be automated, as much as possible.

My suggestion:

Consider this:

+ rosegarden_projects
                      \_file1.rg
                      \_file2.rg
                      \_file3.rg

now a user imports/records audio (audio.wav) into file2.rg
(maybe a quick confirmation dialog here)
result:  a directory is being created, all audio files are copied (not
linked - hd-space is cheap :)

+ rosegarden_projects
                      \_file1.rg
                      \_file2.rg
                      + file2_audio
                                  \_audio.wav
                      \_file3.rg
