Router that doesn't like Drupal

Hi All,

I'm sorry to ask this, but I don't know who to ask next. This regards port
forwarding for routers.

I had brighthouse. I had a router with port forwarding that worked. I had
dyndns.com setup for holly.hobby-site.com. I was happy and my clients were
happy because they could view their site at client.holly.hobby-site.com from
their home or office. If I had known, I would have cherished this time more.

I switched to Verizon Fios (well my husband did). They gave me a cable
router. I cannot figure out how to get it to port forward. It's a Westell
A90 9100EM-10 router. On portforwarding.com it's the only router not
mentioned and given instructions. I've spent hours with verizon, even the
company that created it, and have gotten either people that didn't know or
care, or possible solutions that didn't work.

Can I connect my old, wonderful router with an ethernet cord to it and get
back my port forwarding? Does anyone know the magic settings for this
Westell Router of Darkness?

Thanks,
Holly Ferree

I think your problem is not Drupal, it's just that you can't route the port. I don't really know how to open a port on that router and to be honest this has absolutely nothing to do with this.

My first google search landed here:

I think that is the proper place to ask those questions.

Re: [consulting] Router that doesn't like Drupal Thank you for the link. I’ve already spent 5 months searching and asking verizon. They don’t know and don’t care, so I decided to try you guys :)

I got one email from Keven that says this router has the same GUI so I could try it:
http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Actiontec/MI-424-WR/Terminal_Services.htm
. I’m hoping and praying that will work. I have a client where it would really be nice if they could view their site without having to screenshare.

Thanks,
Holly

Unless you have a FiOS business account, port 80 is permanently
blocked at a network level, not just your router.

Holly,

You cannot connect the old router and expect it to work. You will have
to login as admin to your new router and configure port forwarding. Can
you get to the admin page for the router?

If this is the case, you can reconfigure your webserver to use a
different port.

I actually had an issue with our comcast router the other day where Drupal.org
wouldn't load but all other sites would. Try  talking to a tier 3
sys admin and have them disable smart packet detection. Worked wonders
for us.

Hi Holly. Below is a copy past from a Verizon post. There is a link to a screen cast for setting up the appropriate entries. Of course, use the LAN IP of your "web server" for where to forward the port to. I think the screencast might help. And you'll be forwarding port 80 not 5100 in your rule based upon your previous description

"Specify the local computer that the port forwarding rule will apply to. This is done in the Local Host field. The field will accept either your computer name (the NetBIOS name; for example DADS-PC) or the computer IP address. These values can be found on your My Network page.
If you are setting up a NAT/NAPT rule you must also specify the public IP address that data will be coming in on. You only use this if you have a static IP address for the WAN. Leave it blank/unchecked to apply to any WAN address. If you use static address then check the Specify Public IP Address check-box and enter a specific external IP address.
NOTE: Only one computer can be assigned to provide a specific service or application. If you use static public IP addresses in your Router’s configuration, you must first obtain them from Verizon.

Next you must choose the protocol that you want to forward. Port 5100 isn't a default so you need to define your own: select User Defined.
Give your service a name using the text box and then define the ports that define your newly created service. Clicking the New Server Ports link will allows you select TCP from the Protocol drop-down list and then select single under Destination Port and enter port 5100.

After you have entered a local host, specified a port, and clicked OK the rule will be created. The user-defined rule has been added to the port forwarding table, and the status is Active. You may need to click Resolve Now while the Router is attempting to save the rule to the local host.

Below is a link visually showing the steps outlined above

http://www.screencast.com/users/vztester/folders/Jing/media/7a8b2077-b807-457c-9f97-18d3c8f4ce38

Hope that help. Blessings.

Router status issue update 10/28 :D Hello All,

I just wanted to thank you all for your suggestions and to update... My port forwarding is working! So happy. So yeah Drupal, yeah Drupalites, and yeah consulting!

Thank you all so much!

Holly Ferree

-----------------------------------
Here is the solution for the Verizon Router (This solution might work for others too. I have the average user setup (not using any type of business plan, etc.):

1) Port Forwarding tab --> create new entry, enter the settings below

ROUTER IP ADDRESS OF YOUR COMPUTER
Net address: Any
Public IP Address: Any
Protocols: HTTP - TCP Any -> 80
 Status: Active

2) Firewall: typical

3) Advanced --> Personal Domain Name (Dynamic DNS), enter settings below

Enable: check yes
Host Name:  the forwarding URL you set up at dyndns
Status:    Updated - IP address updated successfully
Connection
:    Broadband Connection (Ethernet)
Provider:   website that you’ve set up for port forwarding (dyndns.org,  no-ip.com, tzo.com, or easydns.com)
Full Domain Name:    YourWebDomainName.ProviderListedInAboveStep
User Name: Your Username when you login to your provider
Password:   Password when you login to your provider
    Wildcard: Check Yes
Mail Exchanger:    (blank, I don’t use)
    Backup MX: left unchecked
    offline: left unchecked
SSL M
ode:    None

------------------
I believe that is all that mattered that was changed...so many tries. (let me know if you have questions on any of the other settings I missed to state above)

Best of luck :D
