Rox desktop loading double copies of an app launcher

by Frank McCormick-5 :: Rate this Message:

I dl'ed the scripts for Debian and Ubuntu (to install Rox desktop)
and ran the Debian version this morning on my Sid installation. Seems
fine except rox-session is loading two copies of wbar, an app
launcher.

I have been in contact with the author of the scripts...he outlined
where Rox looks for autostart info...but so far I've been unable to
convince Rox to only load wbar once.

Could this be a bug in Rox-session - I am running the OroboRox
window manager with Rox.

What is the Exec line of your ~/.config/autostart/wbar.desktop?

[Desktop Entry]

Name[en_CA]=wbar

The .wbar config file:

Could it be wbar runs once from the desktop file, then again when
the .wbar barcommand is encountered ???
If so how do I get around this ??

Is there a launcher for it in
~/.config/rox.sourceforge.net/ROX-Session/AutoStart as well as in
~/.config/autostart ?

Nope, the only launcher I can find is in ~/.config/autostart,
however as I mentioned the desktop file in there execs wbar -config
~/.wbar and the wbar config file has a line in it also calling wbar.
The wbar config file sets up wbar to be a vertical bar left hand
side. The other copy of wbar sits over top of the Rox taskbar. Can't
figure out where that one gets started.

The command in the part of .wbar you posted looks like it's just a
comment showing the command that was running when the config was saved.
Config files don't usually actually run any commands.

Are there definitely two instances of wbar running, not one which has
two bars defined in the config file? Check with ps.

What happens if you remove the desktop file from ~/.config/autostart?
Does the bogus bar still appear but not the correct one?

Yeah. that's what I thought.  If you
run wbar with  -config ~/.wbar. it picks up ONLY the icons and
associated commands. There doesn't seem to be any way to place the bar
except by running it with the full command line ( -vbar, left etc
etc).

I removed the desktop file, but put an App file in the
~/.config/rox-sassion directory.
ps now shows three instances of wbar, one on the left where I want
it, and another over the Rox taskbar. When I click on the
background of that one, it disappears!!!.

Don't add another one in the ROX-Session/Autostart directory! What I
meant was remove the desktop file from .config/autostart, log out of X
and in again and see if you still get a wbar. If you do, you know
something else is starting wbar as well as the XDG autostart. If no
wbars load without the autostart file that means for some reason the
autostart is loading it twice.

Can it be run as a panel applet? If so it could be that you've got it
running as an applet, started by rox-filer, as well as the one started
by ROX-Session.

I have done that now...but wbar still loads...obviously without the
needed & . I think that's why when I click on it...it disappears.
Incidentally it's loading over the Rox taskbar.
I'll have to run find to see if there is any other reference to it.

I don't think it can run as an applet. At least there is no
reference to that in the docs.

What is the output of this:
grep wbar ~/.*
