I was reading

http://blog.backblaze.com/2009/09/01/petabytes-on-a-budget-how-to-build-cheap-cloud-storage/

and saw the

Port Muliplier Backplanes
Chyang Fun Industry (CFI Group) CFI-B53PM 5 Port Backplane (SiI3726)

listed. I've not seen these before and can't find them anywhere online.
I've ask a few colleagues and they couldn't find anything either. Has
anyone seen these about? Note I'm interested it the backplanes exactly
from the blog not the various other form floating around.

Jeff.

 From the article text:
"[thanks to] Chyang Fun Industries in Taiwan for customizing SATA
boards to simplify our design"

The implication being that you could try contacting Chyang Fun
Industries in Taiwan yourself to see if they're willing to sell you
that custom-made part.

Alright, must have skimmed that bit. Anyone seen similar in a back plane?

Jeff.

Try a google search for the Part #SiI3726

http://lmgtfy.com/?q=SiI3726

Lots of results.

Look for "SATA Port Multiplier".  E.g.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Port_multiplier
http://www.addonics.com/products/host_controller/ad5sapm-e.asp

Have fun,

Except that the SI Part #SiI3726 is just the controller chip, it has
nothing at all to do with the board and sockets, so at the end of the
day you'd either need to design and fabricate the boards yourself, or
outsource it to a place like CFI Group.

Well regardless of what the part number is the google search links to people that carry the part you are looking for. If you don't believe me you can look for yourself or you can manufacture it yourself. :-)
