SMTP through Google - 10064 (time-out)

4D IC
4D 2003.8r2
Windows

Incoming mail server (POP3): pop.gmail.com
Outgoing mail server (SMTP): smtp.gmail.com
SMTP AUTH = YES

POP3 Port 995, --> Requires an encrypted connection
SMTP Port 465, --> Requires an encrypted connection

I'm trying to SMTP through Google Apps but continue to get a time-out when
connecting to their SMTP relay.

Does 4D IC automatically use an encrypted connection?

Have you successfully used 4D IC to SMTP through google or similar config?

Please help,
TIA!!!!
David Ringsmuth

David,

To my knowledge the only way to get this to work is to use a seperate
application called "stunnel" in conjunction with 4D.

In my case it wasn't Google, but another server that required encrypted
POP3. This was via a Windows 2003.7 4D Client.

IIRC, others have got 4D/stunnel to work with Google. Search the
archives for stunnel.

Also see http://www.stunnel.org/

Thank Tim,

That definitely looks like a solution.

Now we've solved SMTP, can anyone advise on POP3 collection from Google?
It logs in OK thru stunnel, but only reports 544 messages when you do
a BoxInfo, which is many thousands short.

Sorry, just picked up on your message.

In the end, I just used IMAP which seemed to work as advertised, but I
haven't done too much work on it since the proof of concept.

Hi David

We use stunnel. It is a separate application that can run on any
computer on your network. It simply forwards the packets on to Google
on a secure port.
I was very frustrating getting it up and running on a Mac. I never did
find a compiled executable - The windows world is probably easier.

I have had no problems checking POP gmail once stunnel was up and running.
Just be aware that Google does not follow normal POP/SMTP rules.
EG -
1) If you are checking the POP mailbox from more than one computer you
will want to precede your login name with something "recent:" - if you
don't, then you only get the mail that was receive since the last
logon - no matter what computer it was. ( - and then I think you only
get the last 30 days worth..)

2) When doing SMTP you do not have control over the return address. It
rewrites all return paths with the email address of the account that
is sending the email.
