I'm extremely pleased to announce that Alan Berg will serve as Interim Quality Assurance Director for the Sakai Foundation. Those of you who have worked with Alan know that this is excellent news for the Sakai community. In addition to assisting with the 2.7.0 release Alan will make a number of process and technology change recommendations, especially test automation. He will also engage with the Sakai 3 effort as time permits. Alan will be closely supported by Anthony Whyte in his role as 2.7.0 release manager. Over the next few weeks Alan and Anthony will work together to define an action plan that can be implemented with the active support of the Sakai Community. In the meantime feel free to copy both of them on questions you might have or, better still, use the QA list. This arrangement is made possible by an agreement with University of Amsterdam who generously allocated Alan's time for the next few months to serve in this capacity. I'm thankful for their contribution to the Foundation and to the community. While Alan will still have some local responsibilities, his main focus during this time will be Sakai QA. Subsequently it is likely that Alan will continue to contribute to the QA effort, specifically in executing some of the process change recommendations he will make. University of Amsterdam Conducts OSP Audit

The University of Amsterdam (UvA) has been a pioneer in using the Open Source Portfolio (OSP) in Sakai for numerous educational purposes. On October 26-28, 2009, UvA conducted an audit to 1) determine the viability of continuing to use OSP, 2) gage the possibility of “quick wins” for encouraging and sustaining OSP use, and 3) gather OSP requirements for future use. The audit was commissioned by Léon Raijmann and organized by Marij Veugelers (Veugelers@...) of the UvA IT in Education Department. Janice Smith, Ph.D., of Three Canoes (http://threecanoes.com), a professional services company focusing on open source applications in education, facilitated the audit, meeting with seven user groups (Medical Education, Social Geography, Science, Psychology, Artificial Intelligence, Communication Science, Teacher Education) and the UvA Sakai development and functional support teams. Preliminary findings confirm that although the current use of OSP has declined due to attention being diverted elsewhere, there is overt enthusiasm among UvA user groups for adopting new OSP enhancements to support competency-based education. UvA IT in Education leadership will use the audit report to determine how to employ current OSP innovations to their best advantage and consider how new innovations to be developed by UvA could improve local use of OSP as well as contribute to the OSP community.

A reminder that we plan to impose a new feature freeze on Sakai trunk projects destined for 2.7.0 (e.g., announcements, assignments, chat, rwiki, etc.) that are not slated for independent release. A 2.7.x maintenance branch (2.7.0-SNAPSHOT) will be cut on 12 November 2009 and a 2.7.0 milestone 01 tag will be cut thereafter.

Last week I polled project teams individually relative to my proposal to move forward from the first week of December to 12 November 2009 a 2.7.0 new features freeze date. The freeze date would apply to Sakai trunk projects destined for 2.7.0 (e.g., announcements, assignments, chat, rwiki, etc.) that are not slated for independent release. The freeze date would also not apply to projects under consideration by the product council for inclusion in 2.7.0 (e.g., basiclti, profile2, sitestats, etc.), all of which are slated for independent release as well.

GOALS

1. establish project team consensus relative to a freeze date
2. accelerate, if possible, the creation of a 2.7.x branch
3. generate as soon as possible a 2.7.0-m01 milestone tag for deployment to 2.7 QA servers at UvA, UCT and Marist (and hopefully elsewhere)
4. get testable artifacts into the hands of QA now rather than later

I plan to generate the 2.7.0-m01 milestone tag on 12 November and thereafter generate follow up with milestone/alpha/beta/rc tags every 7-10 days until 2.7.0 is released. A freeze on i18n language bundles would occur later (Beth Kirschner recommends mid-January 2010). Bug fixes can continue to flow from trunk into 2.7.x unhindered until we decide that cutting a 2.7.0 release candidate is warranted (i.e., alpha/beta tags indicate that the bug rate is declining). Thereafter bug fixes will be triaged (e.g., blockers, critical fixes get priority).

Projects teams planning independent releases will be encouraged to begin producing stable releases of their code as soon as is possible so that they can be included in the milestone releases of 2.7.0.

It is anticipated that 2.7.0 will be released in the latter part of Q1 2010, dependent as always on the elimination of blocker and critical issues. I recommend that as a Community we work to ensure that 2.7.0 is released on time so that follow up maintenance releases can occur between May-August in order to support deployers.

POLL RESULTS

+1. So far no project team or lead has objected to my proposed feature freeze date (tally below). There are a few projects I have not polled, none of which I believe have any feature changes that impinge on 2.7.0.

OBJECTIONS

If anyone objects to a feature freeze on trunk code commencing 12 November 2009 please reply to the list stating your objections. Otherwise, I plan to create the 2.7.x branch on 12 November 2009 and generate a milestone tag.

The Release Management Work Group has discussed issuing Sakai 2.5.6
and Sakai 2.6.2 maintenance releases during the first week of December
2009. Both releases will be generated from a known revision point in
their respective maintenance branches as was done for 2.6.1. We are
tracking issues targeted for 2.5.6 and 2.6.2 in Jira. A list of the
current filters is available in the Release Management space in
Confluence.

You can also add these filters to your Jira dashboard by clicking
"Manage Filters", searching for desired filters (by title and/or
author) and adding them as a favorite.

If you are running either Sakai 2.5 or 2.6 in production and there
exist open issues that you would like to see included in either 2.5.6
or 2.6.2 or a future maintenance release please make your needs known
on the sakai-dev or QA lists or feel free to write me directly. If
the issue has no associated Jira please file one. While the Release
Management Work Group cannot guarantee that issue X or issue Y will be
addressed in a particular maintenance release we do work closely with
project teams to identify, triage and resolve issues targeted for
upcoming maintenance releases. Helping us to identify bugs that matter
to you will help us focus our energies on producing maintenance
releases that are relevant as well as timely.

The Sakai Foundation is seeking nominees for its third annual international Teaching with Sakai Innovation Award. Representatives from the Foundation announced next year’s competition at the EDUCAUSE Conference in Denver, CO, today. The intent of the award is to highlight examples of innovative and transformative educational applications of Sakai.

Applications for the 2010 TWSIA will be accepted starting in February 2010. Instructors or other interested parties can visit www.OpenEdPractices.org to learn more about the award and access an online application form and evaluation rubric. Additional information will be posted on the website next month. Winners will be awarded a trip to Denver, CO, to present at the 11^th International Sakai Conference and receive their award.

Entries also seed a collection of innovative practices in the OpenEdPractices.org repository, a community of practice for teaching and learning with open/community-source tools supported in part by rSmart and the Association of American Colleges and Universities.

I don't get a redirect.

Try emptying your local browser cache. There were some changes to the
way the site is served and sometimes local browsers can cache old
redirections.

   1. The title of the presentation (May be edited for publication)

What: EDUCAUSE Market Research Session on Open Source: "The Future of Free"

Unicon invites you to a special session at EDUCAUSE where your opinion counts. We are trying to find out why your institution has or has not adopted open source solutions.

EDUCAUSE 2009 is providing a new pilot program aimed at creating impact for the higher education market. The activity is called Market Research Night and takes place at the EDUCAUSE 2009 Annual conference from 5:30pm – 7:00pm on Wednesday, November 4th. Unicon is honored to be selected as one of only three companies to be involved directly in this activity.

While the other companies selected will be finding out what is best for their products, we have decided to gather primary research about “why or why not” institutions select open source software. Today's economy requires decisive moves by institutions to implement more cost effective software applications. Our goal is to discover why institutions select open source or the impediments posed in the selection process. All research out of this session will be shared with you and the open source communities.

This event does unfortunately overlap partly with the Educause Open Source Reception, which is 6:15pm - 8:00pm. If you are planning to attend the reception, we hope you will start your evening with this event first. Looking forward to seeing you all in Denver!

Greetings! I'm furiously preparing for the annual trip to Educause and the Sakai board meeting that precedes the conference. It should be fairly easy to find me as there are a number of Sakai-related events at this year's conference:

- I'm part of a Point/Counterpoint session entitled "Blackboard, Moodle and Sakai" [1]
- I have a Community Showcase session about Sakai 3. [2]
- Sakai is co-sponsoring the Open Source Reception on Wednesday evening. RSVP if you'd like to attend. [3]
- Josh Baron is part of a Sakai session entitled "Community-Source Evaluation Strategies: Is Sakai Right for Your Institution?" [4]

Help us celebrate Jasig's 10th anniversary in San Diego with outstanding speakers and special events.

The focus is on innovation this year. We'll be highlighting new and established work from higher education institutions: Projects you should know about; local projects in search of community; creative work by established communities of practice; projects that exist only as a gleam in the eye of a creative developer.

Come and see presentations and seminars on new technologies soon to impact higher education. We're seeking talks on topics such as Scala, Spring 3, deployment to the Cloud, Groovy, Grails, REST, Jersey, mobile applications, etc.

5. New NSF Scholarships Available at Marist for Fall 2010 Freshmen

Thanks to a substantial grant from the National Science Foundation, Marist College is able to offer full 4-year tuition, room and board scholarships to selected incoming freshmen in September 2010. To be considered for a scholarship, a student must be a Computer Science or Information Technology and Systems major, academically talented and financially needy. Details on eligibility criteria and instructions on how to apply can be found at http://www.marist.edu/admission/nsfgrant/ .

The purpose of the grant is to contribute to the development of IT specialists who will be well prepared to meet the overwhelming demand expected in the field.

Additional benefits to the scholarship winners include:

6. Sash 0.1.3 Released

Sash 0.1.3, a set of shell and development tools for Sakai, is now
available. 0.1.3 primarily adds vi support (beta) as well as a few
minor cosmetic fixes. This has been tested on Sakai 2.6.x, but the
build artifacts should be binary compatible with Sakai 2.4.x, 2.5.x, and
trunk.

Dear Colleague:

Help us celebrate Jasig's 10th anniversary in San Diego with outstanding speakers and special events.

The focus is on innovation this year. We'll be highlighting new and established work from higher education institutions: Projects you should know about; local projects in search of community; creative work by established communities of practice; projects that exist only as a gleam in the eye of a creative developer.

Come and see presentations and seminars on new technologies soon to impact higher education. We're seeking talks on topics such as Scala, Spring 3, deployment to the Cloud, Groovy, Grails, REST, Jersey, mobile applications, etc.

Talks will be presented in one of four tracks:

Designing & Developing
For developers, architects, UX designers, testers. Presentations for people who build applications.
Deploying & Integrating
For people who need to make applications work on campus: developers, content providers, team leaders, evangelists. In particular, we would like to highlight work that integrates open source projects within the enterprise infrastructure and with each other.
Managing & Governing
What are best practices for managing community source projects or their deployments on campus? For encouraging adoption? For gaining acceptance and campus buy-in? For engaging your community in the processes? Presentations for managers, team leaders, executives, planners and strategists.
Looking Ahead
What are the technologies that will impact higher education in the coming years? What project work, prototypes, plans, and local campus applications would you like to share with a community of your peers?

Half-day Supplementary Seminars will be held in the morning and afternoon on Sunday, March 7th as well as on Wednesday (March 10th) afternoon.

Proposals may be entered on the Jasig Conference Website. Proposals require a Title, an Abstract (under 500 words), a Presenter Profile, and some basic affiliation information. This year we are also asking proposal submitters to select tags that best describe their proposals.

[Announcements] Sash 0.1.3 Released

Sash 0.1.3, a set of shell and development tools for Sakai is now
available. 0.1.3 primarily adds vi support (beta) as well as a few
minor cosmetic fixes. This has been tested on Sakai 2.6.x, but the
build artifacts should be binary compatible with Sakai 2.4.x, 2.5.x, and
trunk.

release of SMS service 0.12 and QNA 1.12. This release brings to Sakai
support for incoming SMS (text) messages by allowing SMS's set to Sakai
being recorded as questions or answers in the QNA tool.

Now that we have made it through svn testing successfully (i.e. all reported issues have been addressed), I would like to schedule the necessary downtime to migrate to the new svn server.

On this coming Tuesday, October 27th, the svn server will be unavailable from approximately 08:00 EDT (GMT-05:00) until 17:00 EDT. While the migration may not require the entire day, we should plan on it. If everything goes as planned, the outage will be approximately four hours.

1) This is a brand new server (i.e. this is not an in-place upgrade).

If testing goes well, an extended outage for the current server will be scheduled to allow full "svnadmin dumps" to be run on the various repositories, copying the dump files, loading dump files, and verifying new repositories. The results of this process can be seen on the test server (i.e. minus taking the source server offline). To help with this migration, please try to perform your typical svn operations against the new server - all of your svn usernames and passwords remain the same. If you run into any trouble, please reply to this thread on list. Let's give this a couple of weeks of testing and then schedule some down time. Thanks, L

1. From the Executive Director

I'm writing to let you know that as of December 18, Pete Peterson, currently Sakai QA Director, will be returning to his duties at UC Davis.

This will leave a vacancy on the Sakai staff. I'm using this moment to rethink the role to some degree at least. The QA process has typically benefitted from an individual paying close attention to the details of the many Jira issues and svn commits that make up the release. The volume of issues and attention to detail required are both relatively high. At the same time I also believe that we are ripe for a strategic rethinking of how we manage QA in Sakai and to help the community institute new processes and, especially, to implement a variety of test automation tools and techniques. I'm not optimistic I can fill both of these needs with one person, which, as you might expect, is all I currently have in the budget. I'm open to feedback and advice on this matter so please get in touch if you have something you'd like to share.

I want to thank Pete for his contributions to the Sakai QA efforts over the past year. We wish him well at UC Davis and we're sure we will continue to hear from him in the community. At least I hope we will!

2. Sakai 2.6.1 Released

Release Date: 15 October 2009

The Sakai 2.6.1 maintenance release provides a set of bug fixes, language/locale updates and performance enhancements that improve upon the Sakai 2.6.0 release. Over 200 issues have been addressed by 2.6.1. Roughly half involve bug fixes while the remainder involve textual updates to language translation property bundles. In particular, important fixes have been applied to the assignment, chat, portfolio, Tests & Quizzes and site-manage modules while updates for Catalan, French, Russian, Spanish and Swedish translations have also been provided.

Sakai 2.6.1 utilizes core service updates provided in the recent Sakai kernel (K1) 1.0.12 maintenance release. Portfolio users will appreciate a performance enhancement made to the kernel's ContentHostingService that reduces portfolio assembly times (see http://jira.sakaiproject.org/browse/SAK-14165).

Older versions of Sakai:
Users of pre-2.5 versions of Sakai are strongly encouraged to update to the Sakai Community-supported Sakai 2.6.1 or Sakai 2.5.5 releases* in order to take advantage of the feature, performance and security enhancements provided by the Sakai 2.5 and Sakai 2.6 series.

The Sakai open source community develops, tests, and maintains the code for all Sakai releases. For the most current release and the immediate prior release, the Sakai Foundation uses its resources to oversee and manage the development, QA testing, patching, and releasing of incremental numbered versions.

For earlier versions, the Foundation no longer provides this oversight and coordination of the community contribution to the codebase. This does not mean that these earlier versions are not used and maintained by some institutions in the community, they are. Institutions running an older version may of course continue to do so, applying patches, bug fixes, and enhancements as they wish. These modifications are committed to the Sakai SVN code repository and are available for others to use if they wish. But the Foundation does not coordinate testing or validation of the code changes, and does not create a concomitant roll-up into an incremental release.

3. The Fluid Project is Pleased to Announce the Release of Fluid Infusion 1.1.2

This release is a combination of bug fixes to existing code plus new features aimed at giving Infusion users a better experience. Infusion 1.1.2 is an incremental upgrade and preserves backwards compatibility for all production-grade components.

7. Moving Along -- Antranig Basman

Hello there fellows all,

As some of you may know, I am moving on from CARET and so my current email address will not be working much longer. I will, however, still be in existence, and doing much the same sort of thing -- as part of the Fluid Project, I have relocated from one partner to another, and as of yesterday am working at the University of Colorado, Boulder, together with the illustrious Clayton Lewis. I am excited at the opportunity to be troublesome in an entirely new community. As you know, although the formal partners on the Fluid Engage project are cultural institutions rather than higher education, Fluid Infusion, our base framework, is still an extremely active project and we are excited to continue working with the partners we built up with it, including uPortal, Sakai and others. So you haven't quite got rid of me yet. I will of course continue to support users of the RSF framework, which will probably be moving to have its infrastructure to be consolidated with Fluid over the next few months. For those of you hanging round Denver next summer, we stand to buy each other a beer, or something harder, depending on the sign and magnitude of accumulated obligation :P My new email for work purposes will be Antranig.Basman@... -- I will try to gradually phase out refs to the old one though this may take some time. 8. Three Students Who Worked to Enabled Sakai 2.6.1 on IBM's Websphere and DB2 Recently Participated in an IBM Poster Competition

Three student members of the Marist/IBM Joint Study team that recently completed the work to enable Sakai 2.6.1 on IBM's Websphere and DB2 products participated in an IBM sponsored poster competition event called TechConnect 2009. The event was held at IBM's Development Lab in Poughkeepise, New York and 24 posters were entered in the contest. Their poster submission was entitled "Project Cloud9". Project Cloud9 is the culmination of our work to port Sakai to IBM's Websphere/DB2/z platform -- tune it on the mainframe, and create a production environment at Marist College that provides access to this version of Sakai to local school districts. It went into production at the beginning of this fall semester.

The students won a first prize in the "early tenure/ solutions" category from the IBM judging team, and a first prize from "the people" (IBMers and IBM execs from the lab who visited the session after the official judging was over). Judging was based on:

Clarity of Communication

Focus on communicating the key concepts of the project/work

1. Technical Achievement, Breakthrough thinking -- describe it along the following scale

Following current trends -------------> redefines the paradigm

2. Your contribution to solution

General team member, performing tasks expected -------------> strong leadership role

3. Business Value of the overall project

Solving daily requirements -------------> new customer offerings with competitive advantage

The students who participated in the contest were Sean Goldsmith, Deyaa Abuelsaad, and Michael Lavacca. Sean and Deyaa are senior CS majors, and Michael is a junior in the Marist CS program. They are also currently employed as IBM interns -- which enabled them to compete in the IBM event. Other members of the team who made significant contributions to this project were: John Bush from rSmart, John Digilio, Martha McConaghy, Adam Hocek, Earle Nietzel and David Brangaitis from Marist College's IT department, Kashife Smith -- Marist College sophomore/CS major, and Marty Banting and Austin Schilling from IBM.

10. Information Regarding Deprecating Foundation Support for Older Sakai Versions

The following is a summary of the Sakai Foundation policy and practice regarding support for older versions:

The Sakai open source community develops, tests, and maintains the code for all Sakai releases. For the most current release and the immediate prior release, the Sakai Foundation uses its resources to oversee and manage the development, QA testing, patching, and release of incremental numbered versions.

For earlier versions, the Foundation no longer provides this oversight and coordination of the community contribution to the codebase. This does not mean that these earlier versions are not used and maintained by some institutions in the community, they are. Institutions running an older version may of course continue to do so, applying patches, bug fixes, and enhancements as they wish. These modifications are committed to the Sakai SVN code repository and are available for others to use if they wish. But the Foundation does not coordinate testing or validation of the code changes, and does not create a concomitant roll-up into an incremental release.

The Foundation and most of the community are focused on maintaining the current versions and development toward future versions since this provides maximum benefit to the community at large and is the best use of our aggregate resources. When possible we recommend upgrading your deployment to currently supported versions.

In July 2009, Sakai version 2.6.0 was released. Thus, any subsequent changes to Sakai 2.4.x code are no longer managed by the Foundation and became the sole responsibility of the individual institutions. No new versions of 2.4 will be released. When version Sakai 2.7.0 is released, the same change will happen to the currently supported version 2.5.x.

[Announcements] Sakai 2.6.1 maintenance release available

The Sakai 2.6.1 maintenance release provides a set of bug fixes, language/locale updates and performance enhancements that improve upon the Sakai 2.6.0 release. Over 200 issues have been addressed by 2.6.1. Roughly half involve bug fixes while the remainder involve textual updates to language translation property bundles. In particular, important fixes have been applied to the assignment, chat, portfolio, Tests & Quizzes and site-manage modules while updates for Catalan, French, Russian, Spanish and Swedish translations have also been provided.

Sakai 2.6.1 utilizes core service updates provided in the recent Sakai kernel (K1) 1.0.12 maintenance release. Portfolio users will appreciate a performance enhancement made to the kernel's ContentHostingService that reduces portfolio assembly times (see http://jira.sakaiproject.org/browse/SAK-14165). We will also need to update the sakai-standard-tool pom (and refresh
it's snapshot artifacts) given that a growing number of projects now
resident in the Sakai Maven2 snapshot repo inherit kernel dependencies
from the sakai-standard-tool pom rather than ye olde Sakai master pom.
