Hi Denny,

After I encountered this issue, I kept having issues until the My
Workspace for the user was deleted because it caused the My Workspace
site to fail in creation. Try deleting them for the affected users
(Admin Workspace > Sites). When those users next login they will be
recreated.

On an up-to-date 2.5.x I'm not getting the issue.

Yuji,
I've also been modifying the UM tool. Eventually we'd like for it to cache
the iTunesU Handle for the course site in a db table. Any chance your fork
can do that?

We, the University of Virginia, also have our own local fork of the UM
ITunesU tool, which is going into production next semester.

Perhaps at some point all these forks should be merged or at least
shared...

Yes, U-M has integrated with iTunes. Zhen Qian is the developer
behind the integration and can provide more technical details.

We've gotten pretty good feedback, but sometimes have issues with
faculty who want to stream vs. download and watch large files.

There are a few streaming and other MM servers on campus that we
don't maintain, and some faculty choose to use those services if
iTunes doesn't meet their needs for some reason. I think iTunes is
the default choice however.

We've used the 20 MB limit for several years, but have recently been
planning to increase it to 50 MB. Of course WebDav is a way to get
around the Sakai upload limit so it's not a hard limit. It's a more
complex issue than is immediately apparent as student problems
increase (download times, tying up campus printers, time outs, etc.)
as file sizes increases. Faculty think nothing of creating a 150 MB
Powerpoint and are puzzled when students have problems. All that
said, 20 MB seems pretty paltry these days.

I have worked with and administered Confluence for a few years, and have ideas about how this type of mirroring might be accomplished. Off the top of my head, I'd say you could mirror the database from a dump nightly or even weekly, and then just toggle the write permissions for everyone but the admins on the mirror. Once you've done that, you could customise the header to add a note about the fact that it's a mirror and point them to the master site for updates. I believe all of this could be accomplished with an unattended restore and a few SQL queries.

I'd be happy to help if you find yourself in a position to explore the mirroring concept further.

on the various reports of connectivity issues with Sakai
Jira/Confluence. I want to reassure everyone that we are working with
Peter Knoop and the Sakai Foundation in finding the best solution to

Second, I want to stress once again that we cannot troubleshoot this
problem if the we are not receiving reports of the problem. Although a
few of us that support Sakai Jira/Confluence are actively on the
"sakai-dev" list, the proper email addresses to report Sakai
Jira/Confluence problem are:

It would be great if you can provide at least the basics of your
problems and some data:

1. Your physical location (i.e., UC Berkeley, Berkeley, CA, USA)
2. Your connection speed/type (i.e., DSL or 100MB/s or wireless or dial-up)
3. Date and time of the connection problem
4. Symptoms or error page as a result of the problem
5. Frequency of encountering the problem

Finally, I have been tracking every reported instance of this issue (in
both sakai-dev and the above email addresses) since August 2008 (when UC
Berkeley took over the hosting of Sakai Jira/Confluence). I can honestly
say that less than 20 (and more like 12 or so) people have reported an
issue with connecting to Sakai Jira/Confluence.

I understand that this is an issue that has a long history and that many
users have "given up" on reporting this issue and basically just assume
that the service does not work; however, this is also contributing to
the lack of concrete data for UC Berkeley to troubleshoot this issue as
well as a feedback mechanism to help us work with users to pinpoint the
problem.

As for any discussion of "mirroring Confluence in Europe", I have not
heard of any plans. Off the top of my head, two major obstacles are who
is going to host it and how do we sync the data. Also, without knowing
why we are having network connection problems (and this issue is not
isolated to the users in Europe), it is unlikely that such an effort
would actually resolve the issue to everyone's satisfaction.

Feedback on network configuration modifications to Sakai Jira/Confluence

Hi all,

After some testing between our sysadmin and Michael Korcuska (thanks
for volunteering!), the service that is hosting the Sakai Jira/
Confluence has undergone some network modifications that will
hopefully smooth the way for those of you who have had trouble
accessing these sites.

So if you experience any access issues starting today, please let us
know at jira-admins@... and we will pass those along to

{oops, forgot to copy the list. I was wondering why I got so few vacation notices... ;) }

Sounds to me like you're missing a server entry for your MTA integration point (i.e. whatever name exim or whatever is trying to use when it passes things off to james). I would double-check the settings in webapps/sakai-mailarchive-james/apps/james/SAR-INF/config.xml (that path is off the top of my head, but it's something close). Likely you just need to add something like <server>sakai.james</server> underneath the existing entries and restart.

You should be able to search for localhost and find the right block. If you're still having troubles, let me know and I can advise further.

Placement Configurations

Hi,
I am working on an RSF tool for Sakai and in one place I'm trying to set a property in several tools' placement configurations.
I have an array of toolds for these tools, however when I call
SiteService.findTool(toolId); it returns null.

ToolManager.getTool(toolId); gets me the tool I'm looking for.

Is there a way to get a Placement or ToolConfiguration object from a Tool object in order to mess around with the placementConfig? Or, will Tool.getMutableConfig() give me the same thing ?

Collab mail working again...

Collab mail is working again, there will be follow up discussions about the nature of the problem in other contexts.

Some of you who've sent messages today may have had the conversation become a bit garbled. Although we can't open access to the mail archive views just yet, the good news is that the mail archives do contain a non-garbled sequence of messages for the entire period in which collab was affected by the problem.

Although it will not solve all problems, using a new font metrics file
will allow most of western and eastern european characters to be
rendered (we used Arial Unicode MS). If so, no code changes will be
needed, only a new renderer configuration file and the new font file.
We'll give it a try.

I've been able to reproduce this problem using Thunderbird (http://
www.mozilla.com/en-US/thunderbird). Setup is as follows:
- Select Preferences, Composition, 'Send Options'
- Select the 'Send the message in HTML anyway' option

I'll put this into the JIRA ticket as well.

Hi Fabian,

The way we do this is via Sakai's webservices. A person goes to our
interface, fills out a form and creates a site. This occurs via the admin
user in Sakai but the normal user externally.

You need to log in as admin and set the following permission in the
user.template realm (in Realm tool):
.auth permission: site.add
After setting this, your users can create new worksite using the
"Worksite Setup" tool in their "My Workspace" worksite.

If you want to restrict this ability to only assistants, I think you
can create a new user.template.assistant realm and set their user
type as 'assistant' -- someone else might want to confirm or deny this..

faculty. I have tried quite a lot of stuff out and don't know more to
try out. Could you please help me?

What I want to do:
Create a worksite for "assistants" where they can create new project and
course worksites.

What I did:
I created a new worksite and added the tool "Worksite setup" to this
worksite. Then I modified the roles in the Realm tool. There I set the
function "site.add" to the correct realm & role and granted this role to
one assistant, but the "New"-Button in the Worksite Setup did not appear
for an assistant.

Do I have to modify something else?

We use latest Sakai 2.5.x with the LDAP UserDirectoryProvider.

Juan,

The trick for this is to use the SecurityAdvisor. The SecurityAdvisor
allows a tool to assert that it has done the necessary security checks
and the rest of the checks for this thread in this request can bypass
checks. Changing the user back and forth is a little more dangerous
as you might leave a sesssion it in the wrong state by some weird
chain of events. The Secuirty Advisor is nice and clean and goes away
when the thread finishes the request.

Aloha,
I've got a new tool, called UrlFiltering, it's purpose is
to track whitelisted URLs that a 'firewall/proxy server' will allow
students to access.
There's alot of content in our site's Melete Modules, the teachers want
to be able to have my UrlFiltering tool search through the Modules
content automatically.
So I've got it working for Admin just fine. My code uses the Melete api
to get and then scan through it's content for URLs.
But even though teachers have all the Melete permissions, it's api still
doesn't let them access the content. I suppose I'm not using melete's
api the same way it does.
But after hours of looking at their code and trying to use the api the
same way, I don't see a way without changing their code.

Any way to just have my tool "su" to admin for 1 routine, so that I can
get the melete content, then return to the original user permissions?
My tool code is simple, if anyone wants to see it, it's available upon
request until I put it on svn (i use cvs right now).

You could simply define a configuration attribute in your sakai.yourTool.xml
registration XML file such as:

Of course, you first need to define the permission in your tool. The line
above will hide the tool away for people who don't have this permission.

Nightly Javadoc build issues

javadoc build issues:

The closest thing to nightly javadocs is currently:

As we explore the use of these features, remember that the key value
of functions.require is to make tools disappear when a user is missing
a permission. So this allows a site to have many tools that are all
there when people are logged in and then have those buttons disappear
for anonymous users or for users with or without a particular role.

In Sakai 2.3 there were very few tools that made use of this
capability - for the Rutgers link tool the key was to allow a tool
(and its page) to be suppressed for students if it was a link to a
campus-wide grading system. In this example the tool registration
does not specify which function was required to include the tool in
the buttons on the left hand side of the Sakai display. For the link
tool, often a function like site.upd was used as an indicator of
highly powered users - any function will do - it does not have to be a
function for the tool itself. Another possible function might be
content.new if this function were only given to instructor or maintain
roles.

Here is an example of the use of this in the resources tool
registration:

So after all that - the quick summary is that if you want to hide a
tool except for Site Owners, add a line like

<configuration name="functions.require" value="site.upd" />

To your tool registration.

A nice thing is that all this functions.require sets is the default
value - it can be overridden by tech support on a a case by case basis
once the tool is placed in a site. I think that the Page Order tool
also changes this property on a tool placement as well - so if you
enable page order, I think that even the instructor can fiddle with
this setting on a case by case basis.

Well, you could save yourself a bit of work and simply get the site owners
to hide your tool from students when they add it to the site using the Page
Order tool?

There were 5 records from 2003 with null start and end ranges. I assigned values based on nearby neighbors and the calendar migration didn't run on startup:

I'm working to test the QA instance of Collab with 2.5beta2, and am noticing that the calendar conversion is taking place every time I start up Sakai. I do have sak11204.forceupgrade set to false in sakai.properties.

Anyway, is anyone seeing anything like this with 2.5beta2?
