Hi,

I think Test and Quizzes requires the import to be in IMS QTI 1.2
format. Can you export from Moodle in that format and try again?

Hi,

I'm migrating questions from moodle to sakai using the import function,
but it don't want to work as I exported them from moodle in IMS QTI 2.0
format. But when I import them to sakai I get an error saying :

So please help .....
There was an error importing this assessment. Ensure that the file is
correctly formatted IMS QTI. Error

>>> We will report on this very issue at the Virginia Tech conference.
>>> WebCT calculated questions take some parameters and generate a set of
>>> variations (with answers), from which one is drawn when the exam is
>>> administered, so, yes, that facility can be simulated by a script
>>> execution that provides input to a question pool.
>>>
>>> Our Physics faculty have the same requirement, and they form our test
>>> community. We are still working out the details, and will provide our
>>> materials and results on Confluence, of course. My lab assistant, Rory
>>>> AFAIK, you can create a "pool" of questions from which you can randomly
>>>> draw questions to populate a "part" in Samigo.
>>>> Unfortuntely, it doesn't create new questions (and solve them) on the
>>>> fly...but picks from a list.
>>>>
>>>> I guess you could have an external "random question creator" script/app
>>>> outside of Sakai that could create a QTI file that you could then import
>>>> into a question pool.

> 1. First, the problem with the bulk of the questions in the WebCT
> Question Database:
>
> Respondus produces the QTI format that Sakai imports, but, as the
> collab documents attest, a direct import of the resulting file fails
> to express the questions correctly because Respondus tags the XML
> questions with "ident=QUE_nnn" rather than the type that the Sakai
> "Import" function expects, resulting in unknown type defaulting to
> short-answer.

Robin,

At Rutgers, I know Chuck did some work to build a custom JSP (well,
it's implemented as a JSP, but it's really ~ 1500 lines of Java code)
specifically to handle import of Respondus-flavored QTI.

If you're interested, I can probably post the code into contrib -- I
don't think there are any RU dependencies (though it may require
Samigo 2.4.x/2.5)

> 2. Now, the problem with calculated questions:
>
> Respondus produces Flash files with Javascript calls for calculated
> questions (like it does for question pools when Respondus is given a
> WebCT Quiz as input). But there must be a simpler way to address
> this: A little investigation into the WebCT tagged text download
> file shows that a WebCT calculated question is really like a short-
> answer question pool-- all the value variants are predetermined and
> hard-coded.

I *believe* the flash-generated questions for generated types come
through correctly through some ContentHosting and Samigo manipulation
(which I believe might satisfy your goals) though I'll admit to not
being familiar with more than the high-level details -- this was a
quick-n-dirty we're having IT staff use to transfer publisher content
by importing through Respondus.

Sakai Migration Experts:

I've been following the WG: Migration list conversation for a while, and
investigating the various tools documented on its Confluence page. A solution
to our particular problem seems imminent, but not quite there yet. Coaching
would be appreciated.

We just started a Sakai pilot (hosted by rSmart). On our WebCT 4.1 platform,
we a have Physics course with hundreds of calculated questions.

1. First, the problem with the bulk of the questions in the WebCT Question
Database:

Respondus produces the QTI format that Sakai imports, but, as the collab
documents attest, a direct import of the resulting file fails to express the
questions correctly because Respondus tags the XML questions with
"ident=QUE_nnn" rather than the type that the Sakai "Import" function expects,
resulting in unknown type defaulting to short-answer.

The solution might be to categorize (by type) in the WebCT Question
Database, run Respondus on a single category of questions, generate the QTI
version, and then apply a universal edit to change the relevant field in the
XML, to "ident=MCSC," for instance.

Right? Make sense? Will that then upload correctly into Sakai? We'll try it
and find out.

2. Now, the problem with calculated questions:

Respondus produces Flash files with Javascript calls for calculated questions
(like it does for question pools when Respondus is given a WebCT Quiz as
input). But there must be a simpler way to address this: A little
investigation into the WebCT tagged text download file shows that a WebCT
calculated question is really like a short-answer question pool-- all the value
variants are predetermined and hard-coded.

Can't that tagged text file be processed by some script to output an XML file
containing the equivalent question pool in nice QTI form (as an exam, if there
is no QTI pool format)?? Then the QTI file could be imported into Sakai as a
question pool, with its behavior-- random presentation of a variant-- identical
to the behavior of the WebCT calculated question. (Note: There is no download
of question pools from WebCT, since a question pool is a property of an
individual Quiz, not a property of the Question Database; so there's no WebCT
tagged text format for question pools.)

Right so far? Has this been done, or attempted? If not, and it seems
plausible, we might try writing it ourselves... but we have lots to do.
Can anyone help with a short-cut-- a link to a concise version of the QTI
short-answer/fill-in-the-blank format, for guidance?

We will also have to face the image import problem, which I have not researched
yet. And we are about to try the UNE facility mentioned by Stephen Swinsburg
(thank you, Rutgers and UNE!) on whole courses, in conjunction with the
delivered WebCT Content Migration Utility, and we will then be able to see how
it handles the quiz questions.
>
> We have been using the UNE migration tool and run into a new
> problem (not the tool's).
>
> When I try to import a file into Melete (modules) greater than
> 50Meg I get the error message
>
> The problem is we have a general file upload (for Resources) set to
> 400Meg. We also cannot figure out howMelete is determining what
> file size is too big.
>
> Does anyone have any experience with this issue? Is it in the
> configuration of Melete (again we couldn't find anything and it
> seems to default on a normal upload -- not an import -- to the 400
>> more instructions about what to do after conversion. I added a
>> note to look inside quizzes.zip to get the xml files and
>> associated resources.
>>
>> Also, re the userfiles, we just put them there as an archive for
>> the instructor. For them to use them they would need to download
>> and get the content out. I guess we could have webdav'd the
>> unzipped archive to the site for them, like we did for the quiz
>> resources, but thats a bit too nice :) (plus we had 800+ sites but
>> only about 100 with quizzes).
>>
>> Ok so now to your main question, debug/verbose mode:
>> of the work and it actually has all the verbose output.
>> We tried to capture the output into a log, and there is a bit of
>>
>> When we get a spare moment I can get one of my developers to look
>> at the logging function so hopefully we can get a bit more info out.
>>
>> How have you gone with the rest of it?
>>> It's in the exported package from WebCT (so not thrown out by
>>> complete"...
>>>
>>> It was not clear [to a novice] that you couldn't upload the
>>> the individual xml files, then upload the 'private' folder to
>>> resources. Don't you have to make the 'private' folder private?
>>> I think that was something Rutgers did to their Sakai
>>> implementation. And then finally fix the paths (on the wish list).

> Hiya, all.

Hello Dodger,

> I've had no problem building and compiling a simple standalone
> application in Perl for Windows using WxWidgets and the ActiveState
> PDK.
>
> Thing is, there's more than 'simple' that I want to do and can't figure
> out how.
>
> 1) I want to know how to be able to include an image embedded in the
> code somehow rather than as a seperate, external file (this way
> there's no pathing issue possible when compiling the thing).

I use something like this:
I convert the image to XPM with ImageMagick (eg.)

  convert image.bmp image.xpm

This is a "textbased" format so you can open it in an editor and then use
it in code like so:

# ---------------------------------------------------------------------
sub img_checked {
my $img = q~
/* XPM */
static char *check[] = {
/* columns rows colors chars-per-pixel */
"16 16 5 1",
"  c black",
". c #848284",
"X c #C6C3C6",
"o c gray100",
"O c white",
/* pixels */
"oooooooooooooooo",
"oooooooooooooooo",
"oo............oo",
"oo.          Xoo",
"oo. OOOOOOOOOXoo",
"oo. OOOOOOO OXoo",
"oo. OOOOOO  OXoo",
"oo. O OOO   OXoo",
"oo. O  O   OOXoo",
"oo. O     OOOXoo",
"oo. OO   OOOOXoo",
"oo. OOO OOOOOXoo",
"oo. OOOOOOOOOXoo",
"oo.XXXXXXXXXXXoo",
"oooooooooooooooo",
"oooooooooooooooo"};
~;
my $data = [ map { m/^"(.*)"/ ? ( $1 ) : () } split /\n/, $img ];
my $xpm = Wx::Bitmap->newFromXPM( $data );
return $xpm;
}

# You can call it like this ....:
my $img_checked = Wx::StaticBitmap->new(
  $self->{panel},
  -1,
  img_checked(),
);

# or in an Imagelist:
my $img_list = Wx::ImageList->new( 16, 16, 1 );
$img_list->Add( img_checked() );

# or an icon:
my $icon = Wx::Icon->new();
$icon->CopyFromBitmap( $img_checked() );
$self->SetIcon($icon);

# ---------------------------------------------------------------------

> 2) I want to be able to draw directly on something.

Define "something". It's not quite clear what you mean...

> Can I embed ImageMagick somehow maybe? Is there a more
> efficient way, since IM is pretty hefty?

There is a module on CPAN called Wx::Perl::Imagick which replaces
"Wx::Image with all functionality of Image::Magick" but like you said, IM
is pretty hefty. Apart from that, ImageMagick and PDK haven't work well
together in the past and the last time I tried was still problematic.

I have had very good results with Imager (also on CPAN or PPM) but it all
depends on what you want to do. Imager packs well with PDK

> 3) I'd REALLY like to be able to do some real-time OpenGL 3D stuff.
> Totally lost on how.

No help here. Did you see Wx::GLCanvas on the wxPerl site?

Kind regards,

Huub Peters
