<br><br>Sakai is a free and open source product that is built and maintained by the Sakai community. Sakai's development model is called "Community Source" because many of the developers creating Sakai are drawn from the "community" of organizations that have adopted and are using Sakai.

On October 26-28, 2009, UvA conducted an audit to 1) determine the viability of continuing to use OSP, 2) gage the possibility of “quick wins” for encouraging and sustaining OSP use, and 3) gather OSP requirements for future use. Preliminary findings confirm that although the current use of OSP has declined due to attention being diverted elsewhere, there is overt enthusiasm among UvA user groups for adopting new OSP enhancements to support competency-based education. UvA IT in Education leadership will use the audit report to determine how to employ current OSP innovations to their best advantage and consider how new innovations to be developed by UvA could improve local use of OSP as well as contribute to the OSP community.</font></p> <br>Janice A. [DG: User Experience] Problems with Filesystem Resource Provider?

The Sling Filesystem Resource Provider (aka FsResourceProvider) is no
<br>longer working for me with new builds of K2 or Sling trunk. This breaks
<br>the fast turnaround approach to development described here:

<br>bundle through the Felix console, it's no longer showing up in the
<br>"Configuration" / "Factory Configurations" dropdown menu, even though it
<br>still has "factory" Status on the "Components" page. Instead it's only
<br>found in the "Configurations" dropdown menu, where changes don't have
<br>any practical effect. I've tried including a fresh JAR in the build (by
<br>uncommenting the fsresource dependency in app-bundles/pom.xml), with the
<br>same results.
<br><br>The breakage presumably happened sometime in the past two weeks. Has
<br>anyone else hit this and gotten around it? If not, I'll post a Sling
<br>JIRA report.

<br><br>It was *very weird* because I was talking to Noah about exactly the same
<br>thing right before you sent this. Then we both went back to our desks to sit
<br>down and he was like, "Hey Matt did you read the email from Seth?" I was
<br>grumbling with him how the independent releases seem to be good things, but
<br>when the kernel broke off it essentially became like managing 2 separate
<br>releases for us, since we have a number of patches against the kernel, some
<br>local & some backports. Before we could release 2.6 Dave quickly hacked
<br>together a simple script for the kernel builds while I worked on getting the
<br>trunk going. This had to be separate from the older xml/ant/maven based
<br>build process we have for the regular builds.
<br><br>The custom project (kernel) script had to:
<br>- Read some configuration properties
<br>- Check out the project externals (kernel in this case)
<br>- Apply the specified list of patch files (aborting if any conflict)
<br>- Update the pom.xml's to be a new version tag (so the build would use this
<br>rather than one in the repository)
<br>- Compile the kernel (failing if it fails to compile)
<br>- Deploy the artifacts to our local maven repository
<br>- Compress and publish source jar for the developers to use in eclipse for
<br>debugging
<br>- Save the build summary report
<br><br>It probably could do more, but this was sufficient. It actually is close to
<br>what the other build process does, except that replaces a few more
<br>files/strings.
<br><br>Every one of these independent releases that will have to be locally
<br>maintained/modified will likely require a consistent workflow similar to
<br>this. It is unlikely that this will be able to be maintained solely with
<br>maven. I was looking at apache buildr or possibly writing a simple helper in
<br>a jvm script language (scala/jruby) to manage this. We need to make it
<br>easier to have customised local builds.
<br><br>Whether an institution wants to keep all of their sources in local git/svn
<br>repo, apply patches on top of the Sakai sources or something else, this
<br>would be the next step after a installing a binary release. Possibly the
<br>parts you need to patch (like strings) could be identified and replaced with
<br>properties or with providers. This wouldn't be possible for everything
<br>though.
<br><br>If it's any reassurance Seth, we've been thinking about and working on the
<br>problem at Michigan. I certainly do want an easier, more reassuring and
<br>hopefully standard release process for custom builds than what currently
<br>exists in the community. ;)

Our central question in this chapter is how to use structured reflection to help students consider their experiences through lenses that bring the political dimensions into focus. This kind of reflection plays a pivotal role in helping them understand and navigate the real world of political possibility, conflict, and uncertainty.<br><br>Structured reflection requires students to step back from their immediate experience to make sense of it in new ways. The object of their reflection could be a newspaper story or scholarly article, their observations while working in a government office or private nonprofit, some kind of political action, or some combination of these and other experiences. Making experiences into objects of reflection means simultaneously heightening their impact while attempting to understand them in connection with any number of other thing: concepts, issues, or experiences arising from other course components; one's past academic learning or personal history, one's values, assumptions, and convictions; theoretical or other conceptual or analytic lenses, and the like. In the process, students observe, analyze, examine, and consider their political experiences from multiple points of view.<br> Of course, one can imagine an almost endless number of frames, lenses, or filters through which to reflect on a given experience, and the choice of frames helps determine the character of the meaning derived from reflection. Different aspects of the experience become salient and take shape. Considering the perceptual and cognitive power of alternative interpretive schemes underscores how important it is for faculty to help students consider their political experiences in terms that contribute to the overall purposes and goals of the course or program.<br> Reflection has the power to reframe experiences and events in new terms. As a result, even when some course or program experiences, such as working in a direct service environment, are not explicitly political in nature, guided reflection can help students recast them in political terms by connecting their direct service with relevant policy environments or systemic analyses of the needs the organization addresses. A Duke University student, for example, talked about how structured reflection on her internship at the refugee resettlement branch of the Catholic Charities of New Mexico led her to study immigration policy and the process of seeking refugee status.<br> A widespread misconception about structured reflection is that it entails simply sharing feelings or voicing opinions. Many people mistakenly see reflection as a "feel-good" experience that may be useful for building community but does not contribute to intellectual development. In fact, poor quality reflective activities do sometimes fit this description. In contrast, in well-conceived reflective activities, emotional responses and initial opinions may serve as starting points but not as ends. High-quality reflection calls for well-developed intellectual skill and perceptiveness richly grounded in knowledge and expertise. Although undergraduate students are not experts in the process of reflection any more than they are experts in the subject matter they are studying, well-conceived and well-structured assignments can help them develop greater expertise in the intellectual processes of reflection, analysis, and interpretation as they work toward greater subject matter expertise.<br> The importance of structured reflection is not simply an article of faith. Extensive research on community service learning shows that the quantity and quality of reflection is consistently associated with both academic and civic learning. Engaging regularly in structured reflection leads students to deeper understanding and better application of subject matter knowledge and increased knowledge of social agencies, increased complexity of problem and solution analysis, and greater use of subject matter knowledge in analyzing problems (Eyler and Giles, 1999). I use Eclipse Ganymede which is the release prior to the latest

There was talk at one point about creating identified monolithic builds<br>
after most of the major tools in Sakai were made independent. Having a<br>
simple way to build Sakai with Samigo automatically include (or similar<br>
builds) is a desirable thing. That said, I don't think we are at the<br>
point of creating these custom aggregate builds. We need to get the<br>
independent pieces settled before they can be used (easily) to make<br>
larger structures.<br>

The freeze date would also not apply to projects under consideration by the product council for inclusion in 2.7.0 (e.g., basiclti, profile2, sitestats, etc.), all of which are slated for independent release as well.</font></div><div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="Arial"><br></font></div><div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="Arial">GOALS</font></div><div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="Arial"><br></font></div><div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="Arial">1. establish project team consensus relative to a freeze date</font></div><div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="Arial">2. accelerate, if possible, the creation of a 2.7.x branch </font></div><div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="Arial">3. generate as soon as possible a 2.7.0-m01 milestone tag for deployment to 2.7 QA servers at UvA, UCT and Marist (and hopefully elsewhere)</font></div><div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="Arial">4. get testable artifacts into the hands of QA now rather than later</font></div><div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="Arial"><br></font></div><div><font class="Apple-style-span" face="Arial">I plan to generate the 2.7.0-m01 milestone tag on 12 November and thereafter generate follow up with milestone/alpha/beta/rc tags every 7-10 days until 2.7.0 is released. <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 12px; ">A freeze on i18n language bundles would occur later (Beth Kirschner recommends mid-January 2010). <br><br>To support work underway to improve computer-based assessment in our Faculty of Health Sciences, UCT is embarking on implementing support in Tests & Quizzes for Extended Matching Items (EMIs, aka R-type MCQs).
<br><br>The JIRA for tracking this work is <a href="http://jira.sakaiproject.org/browse/SAK-17243" target="_top" rel="nofollow">http://jira.sakaiproject.org/browse/SAK-17243</a> (a more detailed spec will appear there within a week or so).
<br><br>There are a number of variations and details in EMIs which are non-obvious and we're looking for anyone else with an interest in using EMIs in Sakai, or with experience of using EMIs in other platforms that support them explicitly.

The Release Management Work Group has discussed issuing Sakai 2.5.6

The Release Management Work Group has discussed issuing Sakai 2.5.6
<br>and Sakai 2.6.2 maintenance releases during the first week of December
<br>2009. Both releases will be generated from a known revision point in
<br>their respective maintenance branches as was done for 2.6.1. We are
<br>tracking issues targeted for 2.5.6 and 2.6.2 in Jira. A list of the
<br>current filters is available in the Release Management space in
<br>Confluence.

<br>on the sakai-dev or QA lists or feel free to write me directly. If
<br>the issue has no associated Jira please file one. While the Release
<br>Management Work Group cannot guarantee that issue X or issue Y will be
<br>addressed in a particular maintenance release we do work closely with
<br>project teams to identify, triage and resolve issues targeted for

One could imagine a GUI like tool doing something similar for Sakai pom.xml and .externals, but then you would have to give clear definition of the quality of each generated profile so the end user could decide the relative risks and benefits.<BR>

There was talk at one point about creating identified monolithic builds<BR>
after most of the major tools in Sakai were made independent. Having a<BR>
simple way to build Sakai with Samigo automatically include (or similar<BR>

Thanks Karen, that worked. One issue that I still continue to have is<br>
attachments for sections. I've attached another example - the item<br>
attachment works fine, the section attachment does not. In this case<br>
(from studying exports from Samigo) I should not wrap <qtimetadata/><br>
with <itemmetadata/> when it is a direct child of <section/><br>

Doe anything else not look right with the example?<br>

<br><br>In order to avoid compatibility issues with Sakai, I'm looking for a recommended setup for Mac.
<br><br>For instance, which version of Java : 1.5 or 1.6, Eclipse Cocoa or Carbon, 32 or 64 bits, etc.

FWIW, we are planning on a normal 2.7.0 that will be "monolithic". It
<br>will be built on top of some of these separate pieces but we're not
<br>planning on solely a "construct it yourself" approach. What happens
<br>after that point is certainly up for discussion. I personally like the
<br>idea of letting tools evolve independently and occasionally grabbing
<br>the latest stable versions into a monolithic release when it makes
<br>sense. But I don't have to deploy Sakai on my campus.

Thanks Karen, that worked. One issue that I still continue to have is
<br>attachments for sections. I've attached another example - the item
<br>attachment works fine, the section attachment does not. In this case
<br>(from studying exports from Samigo) I should not wrap <qtimetadata/>
<br>with <itemmetadata/> when it is a direct child of <section/>

There's no way for an individual user to remove or configure their home
page. An admin could do this, but as you mentioned, if the user decided
to edit their tools (removing and readding), the synoptic view would
come back again. The actual request you're asking for is an unresolved feature <a href="http://jira.sakaiproject.org/browse/SAK-7946" target="_top" rel="nofollow">SAK-7946</a>.<br><br>In 2.6.1 you can configure your system for different home layouts with a property based on site type via <a href="http://jira.sakaiproject.org/browse/SAK-16747" target="_top" rel="nofollow">SAK-16747</a> which might be helpful. You can also remove the tool registration xml for a particular synoptic tool, but this would disable it for everyone. <br>

I agree they can be removed via sites tool but next time you do an 'edit tools' on the site they come back.

<br><br>Check Tomcat/shared/lib, you most likely have duplicate versions of
<br>your API jars deployed there which will cause the issue you are
<br>experiencing (ClassNotDefinedException most likely)

Hi everyone, i was developing some tool for sakai, nad I dont know what i have done, but the external logic and logic classes was not been stantiated in my bean. I know it must be related to spring, but I checked all the files and it sems to be correct. Then, I deployed one of my backups, and the problem persisted. Finally, I created a brand new tool with the sakai appbuilder plugin, but with the same name of my messed-up tool, and the problem was still there!!! The strange thing is that everithing is correct! I created a toll using the plugin, but with a diferent name and everithing is working fine. I think there must be some files that are being kept intact from older deployments, thats the only thing I can think of...
<br>So I was wondering if there is a way to totally erase some tool from sakay, as if it have never existed, and then I could deploy it and keep on with my life...hehehe.
<br>I almost forgot, I am using sakai 2.6.

Hi Dave,<br><br>There are two places in exportAssessment.xml you might need to change:<br><br>1. Add <itemmetadata> tag after <item>, and </itemmetadata> before <presentation><br>2. Remove the \n (empty lines). We use \n to distinguish multiple attachments.<br>

As a proof of concept, we are building IMS CP export functionality in<br>

Everything is working fine when it comes to the questions, however my<br>

logs on in the gui to indicate the failure - I just wonder if I'm<br>
missing something in the xml or zip that I generate. Could one of the<br>
T&Q devs try the attached zip - it has one question, with one<br>
attachment (Winter.jpg). The question imports fine, but the attachment<br>
is no where to be found.<br>

I'm running a recent 2.6.x version of Samigo.<br>
