Rsync 3.0.5pre2 released

Rsync version 3.0.5pre2 is now available for release testing. This is
a bug-fix release.

I hope this is the final pre-release for 3.0.5, so please test this new
release and send email to the rsync mailing list with any questions,
comments, or bug reports.

The changes since 3.0.5pre1:

- Fixed the use of a dot-dir path (e.g. foo/./bar) inside a --files-from
file when the root of the transfer isn't the current directory.

- Fixed a bug with "-K --delete" removing symlinks to directories when
incremental recursion is active.

- Fixed a hard to trigger hang when using --remove-source-files.

- Fixed reverse lookups in the compatibility-library version of
getnameinfo().

- Fixed a bug when using --sparse on a sparse file that has over 2GB of
consecutive sparse data.

- Got rid of a bunch of "warn_unused_result" compiler warnings.

- If an ftruncate() on a received file fails, it now causes a partial-
transfer warning.

- A couple manpage improvements.

- Allow a path with a leading "//" to be preserved (CYGWIN only).

Rsync 3.0.4pre2 released

Rsync version 3.0.4pre2 is now available for release testing. This is a
bug-fix release with the only "enhancement" being the adding of a way to
interact with an overly-restrictive server that refuses rsync's
behind-the-scenes use of the -e option.

I hope this will be the final pre-release prior to 3.0.4, so please do
test this and send email to the rsync mailing list with any questions,
comments, or bug reports.

Changes since 3.0.4pre1:

- Fixed the hard-linking of files from a device that has a device
number of 0 (which seems to be a common device number on NetBSD).

- Fixed the handling of a --partial-dir that cannot be created. This
particularly impacts the --delay-updates option (since the files
cannot be delayed without a partial-dir), and was potentially
destructive if the --remove-source-files was also specified.

- The --iconv option now converts the content of a symlink too, instead
of leaving it in the wrong character-set (requires 3.0.4pre2 on both
sides of the transfer).

- When using --iconv, if a filename fails to convert on the receiving
side, this no longer interferes with deletions in the root-dir of the
transfer.

- Fixed a bug where --delete-during could delete in a directory before
it noticed that the sending side sent an I/O error for that dir.

- When using --iconv, if a server-side receiver can't convert a
filename, it now outputs the name back to the client without mangling
the charset.

- Changed some errors that were going to stdout to go to stderr.

- Some manpage improvements.

I have made rsync 3.0.3pre3 available for release testing. This is another
bug-fix release, with the only "enhancements" being made to the manpages and
the testsuite.

These are the changes that have happened since 3.0.3pre2:

- Fixed the sending of xattr directory information when the code finds
a --link-dest or --copy-dest directory with unchanged xattrs -- the
destination directory now gets these unchanged xattrs properly
applied.

- Fixed an xattr-sending glitch that could cause an "Internal abbrev"
error.

- Fixed deletion handling when copying a single, empty directory (with
no files) to a differently named, non-existent directory.

- Fixed the backing up of a device or special file into a backup dir.

- Fixed a problem with how a destination path with a trailing dot-dir
was compared against the daemon excludes.

- If a file's length is so huge that we overflow a checksum buffer
count (i.e. several hundred TB), warn the user and avoid sending an
invalid checksum struct over the wire.

- If a source arg is excluded, --relative no longer adds the excluded
arg's implied dirs to the transfer. This fix also made the exclude
check happen in the better place in the sending code.

- Improved the code to better handle a system that has only 32-bit
file offsets.

- Improved the daemon tests, including checking module comments, the
listing of files, and the ensuring that daemon excludes can't affect
a dot-dir arg.

- Improved some build rules for those that build in a separate
directory from the source, including better install rules for the
man pages, and the fixing of a proto.h-tstamp rule that could make
the binaries get rebuild without cause.

- Improved the testsuite to work around a problem with some utilities
(e.g. cp -p & touch -r) rounding sub-second timestamps.

- Fixed the combination of --xattrs and --backup.

- Fixed several places in the code that were not returning the right
errno when a function failed.

Rsync 3.0.2 released w/xattr security fix (attn: 2.6.9 onward)

I have released rsync 3.0.2. This is a security release to fix a
potential buffer overflow in the extended attribute support. For
more details, see the rsync security advisory page:

There is a patch there that can be applied to 2.6.9 (if you were using
the xattrs.patch), 3.0.0, or 3.0.1.

Those running a writable rsync daemon can opt to refuse the "xattrs"
option in their daemon config to avoid the problem without an upgrade.

I would like to thank Sebastian Krahmer for bringing this bug to my
attention.

Rsync 3.0.1pre3 released

I have released rsync 3.0.1pre3 for testing. This version contains a
couple more bug fixes since the 3.0.1pre2 release:

- Don't allow a daemon-exclude of .* or */ to affect a (vital) "." dir.

- Fixed a glitch in the path-checking of the daemon-exclude code that
could check a relative arg against the wrong current directory.

- A couple minor chdir() improvements in the arg-parsing code.

- Improved the hard-link testsuite script.

Hopefully this will be the last pre-release of 3.0.1 before the final
release. Please test this and send email to the rsync mailing list with

Rsync 3.0.1pre2 released

I have released rsync 3.0.1pre2 for testing. This version contains a
few more bug fixes since the 3.0.1pre1 release:

- Fixed a problem with the --iconv processing when a filename fails to
convert: the code no longer gets out of sync, and aborts.

- Fixed an assert failure in the hard-link code ("hlink.c:508").

- Improved the handling of per-dir merge files with --relative.

Rsync 3.0.0 released

Yes, it's finally that time -- rsync 3.0.0 has been released. This is a
feature release that also includes quite a few bug fixes.

directory operations.

- Padded the "*deleting" itemized output for better alignment.

- A daemon no longer logs files as received if the transfer was run
with --only-write-batch.

- Improved Makefile changes for reconfigure and distclean.

Another security advisory for a writable chroot daemon

It was recently brought to my attention that a writable rsync daemon
that has "use chroot" enabled could potentially be tricked into loading
a user-supplied library file if the library can be uploaded into a spot
where a normal rsync action (such as an attempt to lookup a username
from an ID) would cause the loader to load it in.

If you haven't already taken steps to exclude library areas from your
writable chroot module, then you should read on. If anyone is running
their writable module with a uid of 0 and allowing access by users that
they don't fully trust, I'd suggest fixing that first.

One easy way to keep users from uploading libraries into sensitive areas
of your chroot hierarchy is to create some directories in the top of the
chroot area without write permissions for the module's user. Then,
exclude those directories via the daemon config file, like this:

exclude = /etc /lib /usr

There is also a patch available that solves the problem for the case of
user/group-name lookups:

I have added of a new daemon config parameter, "numeric ids", that
disables ID lookups when enabled. It is enabled by default for a chroot
module. This change was just added to the 3.0.0 code for inclusion in
its upcoming release. There is also a patch available for 2.6.9:

This patch assumes that you've already applied the munge-symlinks diff
that was mentioned in an earlier advisory. (If you did not wish to do
that, there will be a few failed hunks that can be manually applied.)

- Some documentation improvements.

- Updated some build rules to make things more automatic.

- Switched the creation of proto.h from awk to perl.

- Updated various admin helper scripts to deal with switch of the

- Added the --contimeout option that allows a daemon connection to
timeout after a certain number of seconds.

- Improved the sender-side hashtable support for really large files
even more.

Rsync-daemon security advisories for writable daemons

There are two security advisories for people who run a writable rsync
daemon. One affects only those with "use chroot = no" (which is not a
very safe combination in general), and one affects a daemon that has
daemon-excluded files that are being hidden in a module's hierarchy.
Included are simple config-change suggestions that should help you to
avoid the security issues. These advisories affect all rsync versions.

Advisory #1:

If you are running a writable rsync daemon with "use chroot = no", there
is at least one way for someone to trick rsync into creating a symlink
that points outside of the module's hierarchy.

This means that if you are allowing access from users who you don't
trust, that you should either figure out a way to turn on "use chroot",
or configure the daemon to refuse the --links option (see "refuse
options" in the rsyncd.conf manpage) which will disable the ability of
the rsync module to receive symlinks. After doing so, you should also
check that any existing symlinks in the daemon hierarchy are safe.

Starting with the 3.0.0-pre6 release, there will be a new daemon option
available: "munge symlinks". This will allow an rsync daemon to accept
symlinks and return them intact (with even a leading slash still there,
which is new for a non-chroot daemon), but will not allow the symlinks
to be used while they are in the daemon's hierarchy. For those running
2.6.9, there is a patch to enable this option:

Any admin applying that patch should read the "munge symlinks" section
of the modified rsyncd.conf manpage for more information. You can also

Advisory #2:

If you are running a writable rsync daemon that is using one of the
"exclude", "exclude from", or "filter" options in the rsyncd.conf file
to hide data from your users, you should be aware that there are tricks
that a user can play with symlinks and/or certain options that can allow
a user that knows the name of a hidden file to access it or overwrite it
(if file permissions allow that).

You can avoid the symlink problem using the suggestions for Advisory #1.

You can avoid the problems with other options by putting the following
"refuse options" setting into your rsyncd.conf file:

refuse options = --*-dest --partial-dir --backup-dir

An upcoming release of rsync 3.0.0 will hopefully fix the daemon-exclude
validation of these options to make this unnecessary, but this has not
yet been implemented.

If you combine the above refuse options with the prior suggestion to
refuse --links, that would give you this list of options (included here
for easier copy/pasting):

refuse options = --links --*-dest --partial-dir --backup-dir

Finally, a big "thank you" to Matt McCutchen for his security work in
discovering and reporting these problems, suggesting avoidance options,
and helping me to test my munge-symlinks patch.

- Avoid hard-linking devices together if their preserved mtime differs.

- Replaced the lib/getaddrinfo.c code.

--no-recursive. This fix involved getting rid of an old "FIXME" in
the code where a non-recursive listing would list directories on

non-recursive listing.

- Fixed a delete glitch with --relative, --no-recursive, --dirs, and

- Improve the internal flagging of implied directories and those that
were sent with and without content.

- Fixed a problem with the remote charset arg when using the new
--iconv=LOCAL_CHARSET,REMOTE_CHARSET option.

- Fixed a build glitch for some strange iconv setups.

- Fixed a problem in the AIX ACL code.

- Fixed a build glitch for some pre-processors that didn't like an
#if conditional inside a macro.

- Improved patches/dynamic-hash.diff (which is one solution that
should help to speed up the transfer of really large files) so that
it doesn't also slow down the transfer of normal-sized files.

- Added a missing "len" variable in lib/inet_ntop.c.

- When --partial-dir=DIR is used, the server side no longer fudges
the exclude rules (this is a client-only behavior).

NEW FEATURE:

- One simple new feature made it in because it was so trivial: the
option --no-motd will silence a deamon's message-of-the-day output
without having to go completely --quiet.

INTERNAL:

- Improved the case statement in exit_cleanup() so that it cannot
get out of sync with the exit steps when the code changes.

- The macro WIFEXITED(stat) will now be defined if the OS didn't
already define it.

DEVELOPER RELATED:

- The xattrs patch had a couple memory bugs fixed, and there is now
preliminary support for Mac OS X extended attributes.

- The rsync.1 and rsyncd.conf.5 files now have '\' in front of any
'-' where we don't want a line-break.

Rsync 2.6.9pre2 released

I've just released rsync 2.6.9pre2. This version is mainly some fixes
and general cleanup that I made after getting to run the source through
IBM's code checker.

Please test this out and email the rsync mailing list with any
questions, comments, bug reports, etc. Thanks!

The changes since 2.6.9pre1 are as follows:

BUG FIXES:

- Fixed an infinite loop bug when a filter rule was rejected due to
being overly long.

INTERNAL:

- Did a code audit using IBM's code checker program and made several
changes, including: replacing most of the strcpy() and sprintf()
calls with strlcpy(), snprintf(), and memcpy(), and adding a 0-value
to an enum that had been intermingling a literal 0 with the defined
enum values.

- Fixed a potential bug in f_name_cmp() when both the args are a
top-level "." dir (which doesn't happen in normal operations).

- Changed exit_cleanup() so that it can never return instead of exit.
The old code might return if it found the exit_cleanup() function
was being called recursively. The new code is segmented so that
any recursive calls move on to the next step of the exit processing.

DEVELOPER RELATED:

- The rsync.yo and rsyncd.conf.yo files have been updated to work
better with the latest yodl 2.x releases.
