How to fetch Summary Information for a text document on win XP

Hello
   I have been struggling past few days on how to fetch SummaryInformation or DocumentSummaryInformation ADS stream attached with a text document on windows XP. SummaryInformation and DocumentSummaryInformation streams keep property data such as author, title, catagory and so on (edited through property->summary menu on XP).

I am using Samba version 3.2.6 on a Linux box. cli_qpathinfo_streams() lets me get list of all streams associated with the text file. I can get most ADS streams as <file-name>:<stream-name> , using smbget but this request fails for <filename>:\005DocumentSummaryInformation with error NT_STATUS_OBJECT_NAME_INVALID.

How do I increase the 20000 millisecond timeout?

Perhaps, this issue has already been posted here. However, I have already
done a lot of searching on this problem.

I have Fedora Core 8 with samba-client-3.0.33-0.fc8.

As you may know, this client has a timeout of 20,000 milliseconds. I would
like to increase this timeout as it causes numerous problems for my
programs, mainly BackupPC.

Has anyone done this? And are there some detailed instructions on this? I
have heard that I basically have to recomplie the client.

Windows clients connecting to Samba with OpenLDAP password backend

I am having real troubles with one of our servers.

Background:
We have been using samba in our company for more than 11 years now, since version 1.9.16 ...
We run Sun Solaris on our servers.
We used to run NIS+ as our password system, but due to it's almost impossibility to manage (basically only I knew how) we've moved to LDAP ...
We have now decided to centralize all our Samba passwords into the LDAP.

On the one machine configured to use LDAP for passwords we have a mysterious problem, If we access the machine via a Windows computer (XP, Vista, etc) we can create files and folders we can even rename and delete folders, but we cannot rename or delete files.

If we access the machine via a Solaris or Linux machine using smbclient we can do everything.

I originally wondered if it was due to the Sun compiled Samba 3.0.35 server that is installed, so i removed it and compiled in 3.4.2 with OpenLDAP support, but it has exactly the same issues.

This problem does not occur on our other machines (that run ldap as their naming service in all but samba) ...

I'm happy to show all relevant information and logs/debugs if necessary.

I have seen some people talk about this before on the internet, but there doesn't appear to be any answer.

Can't add local machine users after configuration of samba

Hello all, I have a CentOS 5 server that I've configured as a domain member to allow my users to authenticate with the server using their AD credentials. I have run into one small problem, after configuring samba and winbind the adduser command is no longer able to add users to the local machine (passwd, shadow, group). I know I could just add all the users to AD however this if for an ftp server and I'd rather not add 100 FTP accounts to AD, I'd prefer that the users who need shell access authenticate using AD credentials and all FTP and SFTP only users use local authentication.

Here are the specifics of my environment:

- Why does the libsmbclient is made up of objects related to MS RPC/ NDR Marshalling library. And interesting smbclient also links it. ?

- Similary the Winbind library ??
- Why does the client need to have Virtual Windows Registry layer ?

Is the smb client maintained. Why do we need a client if we have the CIFS VFS built into the kernel.

If the SMBClient is maintained, which is better -

- accessing a file through vfs

- accessing a file through smbclient.

My requirement is to browse and only read the file from the CIFS Share.

Hello,

I understand smbclient is an FTP like client to access Samba/CIFS service. I would like to have only SMBClient and the basic dependency to build just the client that access Windows share ? As I browsed through the net I got different information and I stumbled many questions. I have summarized below -

And it would be a great help if I get clarified on these questions.

1. For SMBClient to work - Do I need any SAMBA modules/libraries for this from samba.org ? and my best guess is
Samba-Common - Is this module dependent on any other linux modules ?
Is there a separate source tarball for this module ? Or where do i locate the source for this module in Samba source tree?

2. Is it possible for me to build SMBClient that can access only CIFS Share ?
3. To access the CIFS. should I need kernel module CIFS. Does sambaclient work with CIFS module part of the UNIX kernel ? Should I also need smbs kernel module ?

4. What are the libraries/dependency for SMBClient. And my understanding so far
        - libc (Standard C library and Standard Math library)
            - libcrypt (for encryption/decryption)
           - libldap (Open Ldap)
           - Perl interpretter (why this ??)
           - Anything missing ??
5. At the end of the day, how does the samba module makes a network connection.    What are the native lnux networking modules(so/lib) that Sambacommon is dependent on to make the TCP/IP connections ??
