Samsung ML-1740?

I've a Samsung ML-1740 laser printer, and I'm often struggling when I need to configure it for use under Mac OS X.  Samsung used to provide Mac driver, but they removed it some time ago (currently they support Linux and Windows only).  There's some old unmaintained drivers for Mac in various archives, but they either don't work under OS X 10.5 or work in weird ways (printing pages in reverse order, or providing washed out output).

Is there any chance to see this printer supported by Gutenprint?

Extremely unlikely.  The Samsung ML-1740 uses the proprietary Samsung
Printer Language.  Gutenprint does not support this language.  You
may have some success using the drivers from OpenPrinting.org.

Oh well....  Considering the printer is showing signs of mechanical problems lately, and that the toner is low (and costs like half of a new printer), maybe it's time to replace it anyhow...

Looking at printer compatibility lists, I don't see most of the newer HP printers.  Especially the lower end ones I'm interested in.  Are HP LaserJet P1006 and/or HP Color LaserJet CP1518ni supported by Gutenprint drivers?  Neither is mentioned on compatibility page.

Looking at the specs for P1006 they say "host based printing" which immediately raised red flag.

For CP1518i specs say PCL 6 and 5c, as well as PostScript emulation (whatever "emulation" means, ghostscript kind of thing on the host?).  Sounds more promising than "host based".

The HP P1006 uses the XQX stream protocol and is not supported by
Gutenprint drivers.

The Gutenprint drivers do not support color on laserjets or with the
Generic PCL drivers.  I think you should be able to at least use a
generic PostScript PPD supplied in OS X to print to the HP CP1518i.

At the present time, the Gutenprint project does not have a
maintainer for the PCL code.

We do not currently have a maintainer for the PCL driver, so no.  If
someone wants to volunteer, we would gladly consider the offer.

Some of the cheap HP's support PCL and some don't.  For example, the
1022 does but the 1018 doesn't.  There's no simple way to tell; you
have to look carefully at the specs and the list of supported printers.
