A Simple Physics Simulator written in Scala

Simple Mechanics Simulator (SiMS) is an open source physics simulation library I wrote in Scala. It's main features include:

    * 2D rigid body simulation
    * Simulation of joints
    * Collision detection and response

Important aspects of a developer's point of view are the extensibility and - as the name says - simplicity of the simulator. Unlike many other simulation libraries, SiMS is structured in a way that makes it easy to enhance or add new features to the library.
For example, a developer can implement a better collision detection system or create new types of shapes by simply inheriting from classes.
Moreover, SiMS is - thanks to Scala - programmed in a very concise manner, thus making the library very simple to understand.
The library was created under the terms of a one-year project at school. Having to comply with the evaluation criteria of a project in german language, I had no choice but to do part of the project in that language. Thus, all comments in the code and a tutorial on the simulator are written in german. However, the source code is in english; that is class, variable and method names are all in english. The comments may be translated in the future.

The site also provides a small GUI program, "graphyx", for testing and visualizing SiMS.

Hi,

specs-1.6.1 (http://code.google.com/p/specs) is now available, essentially delivering bug fixes and small enhancements:

- the ability to define an "around" context to execute the body of an example inside a specific context, like a Lift Session for example. You can see it in action on the Lift wiki here:

[ANN] towards language-integrated query for Scala (yes, LINQ for Scala)

From time to time a new solution is proposed to the age-old problem of
transparent persistence.

Today is one of those days.

My team and I have reported on using compiler plugins to translate database
queries into SQL:1999, using a very capabable intermediate language (Ferry)
in connection with its very capable optimizer. After following developments
in this area for some time, I see some innovative aspects in the proposed
approach (e.g., an analysis of integration levels between programming and
query languages). So you might want to take a look.

Absract

The integration of database and programming languages is difficult due to
the different data models and type systems prevalent in each field. We
present a solution where the developer may express queries encompassing
program and database data. The notation used for queries is based on
comprehensions, a declarative style that does not impose any specific
execution strategy. In our approach, the type safety of language-integrated
queries is analyzed at compile-time, followed by a translation that
optimizes for database evaluation. We show the translation total and
semantics preserving, and introduce a language-independent classification.
According to this classification, our approach compares favorably with
Microsoft's LINQ, today's best known representative. We provide an
implementation in terms of a Scala compiler plugin, accepting two notations
for queries: LINQ and the native Scala syntax for comprehensions. The
prototype relies on Ferry, a query language that already supports
comprehensions yet targets SQL:1999. The reported techniques pave the way
for further progress in bridging the programming and the database worlds.

This morning I deployed a release candidate for ScalaTest 1.0.
ScalaTest 1.0 is a major upgrade from the previous released version,
0.9.5. It has many new features. Here are some highlights:

- improved JUnit, Ant, and Maven integration
- improved integration with JMock, EasyMock, and Mockito
- three new core BDD traits: FlatSpec, WordSpec, and FeatureSpec
- a GivenWhenThen trait that lets you add documentation to tests that
also shows up in reports
- several new FixtureSuite traits that facilitate the functional style
of passing fixtures into tests
- color text output
- reports that can be reordered into sequential order after a concurrent run
- a Conductor class that facilitates multi-threaded testing of
concurrency abstractions
- the ability to mark tests as pending, or mark code as pendingUntilFixed
- a OneInstancePerTest trait that ensures each test in a suite is run
isolated in its own instance of the suite class
- a ParallelTestExecution trait that allows tests in the same suite to
be run in parallel
- a SequentialNestedSuiteExecution trait that ensures nested suites
are executed sequentially even when other suites are executing in
parallel
- a withFixture method that enables code to be executed before and after a test
- one new matcher each for equality comparisons and expected exception checks

[ANN] Xus, a scala-based peer-to-peer platform

Xus is a peer-to-peer platform in the spirit of JXTA and Pastry. It has a 3 layer architecture (basic packets, 5 types of message routing, and a variety of services) and my automated tests say that layers 1 and 2 apparently work. The goals are simplicity, reliability, security, and ease-of-use. As of this writing, the code base is 1214 lines. Xus does not rely on any third party libraries, except for the Scala 2.8 runtime (I'm using release 18815 at the moment and I periodically update to the latest release).

I'm looking for people who would like to help scrutinize the doc, protocol, architecture, functional style, and code and maybe even help write code.

Reinstalling Eclipse 3.5, some plugins, and Scala 2.7.6. afterwards, Scala
2.7.6 plug-in cannot be installed.

The detailed [Eclipse] error message is:

Unfortunately, Lift doesn't compile under 2.7.6. The following line:

The maven-scala-plugin team is pleased to announce the maven-scala-plugin-2.11 release!

The maven-scala-plugin is used for compiling/testing/running/documenting scala code in maven.

Changes in this version include:

o For scala version prior to 2.8.0, maven-scala-plugin could use a file to pass arguments to Main. This fixes issues on OSes with argument length limitations (like windows)
o For scala version 2.8.0 and above, maven-scala-plugin now uses the @ argument to pass arguments via a file. This fixes issues on OSes with argument length limitations (like windows)
o allow running vscaladoc aggregation only from command line use "-Dforce-aggregate=true" (avoid using in pom.xml) [ !! Experimental, work only with vscaladoc-1.2-SNAPSHOT !! ]

o add jline in the classpath of scala:console to enable REPL enhancement when jline is available

Here is the changelog for the actor fixes in 2.7.5:

- Fixed #1999 (Starvation problem when lots of tasks are created
from FJTaskRunner thread). This could result in the JVM running
out of memory when a lot of actors where created at a very high
frequency.

- Fixed #2000 (Linked actors do not always terminate properly).
This could result in memory leaking in applications that create
many linked actors.

- Disabled reference-counting actors using WeakReferences, since
this could lead to memory leaks. Termination of actors is still
tracked, although using a simpler scheme that does not rely on
WeakReferences. In some cases, users must now call
`Scheduler.shutdown()` explicitly to terminate an actor-based
application.

- Fixed a `NullPointerException` bug in `Scheduler.restart`.

Highlights

This release is based on a new approach to integration with the Eclipse
JDT which makes use of Equinox Aspects and the JDT weaving functionality
developed in conjunction with Andrew Eisenberg of AJDT.

This allows for much deeper and more robust interoperation between
Eclipse's Scala and Java tooling. As a result many long standing bugs
have been resolved (see below) and many additional JDT features will now
work correctly with Scala projects.

From 2.7.4 onwards the new name for the plugin is the Scala IDE for
Eclipse (thanks to Ian Skerrett of the Eclipse Foundation for the
suggestion).

Since 2.7.3 I have taken on the role of lead for the project.

Installation Notes
==================

The recommended installation method is using the Scala IDE for Eclipse
update site; the update site is at:

Note that these are update site URLs, and are not navigable using a
web-browser. Please see http://www.scala-lang.org/node/94 for further
information.

Currently (as of April 2009) it is difficult (but not impossible) to
install the Scala IDE into a readonly Eclipse installation. This is
resolved on very recent builds of Eclipse 3.5 (post M6) but for now it's
recommended to install from the RC update site directly into a fresh
read-write Eclipse installation. Instructions for installing into a
read-only or otherwise unusually laid out Eclipse can be found in the

If you don't install into a fresh Eclipse instance, I would recommend
uninstalling any previous Scala IDE versions first.

Upgrade Notes
=============

It's no longer necessary to have per-projects settings for the Java
builder (disabling output folder scrubbing and preventing the copying of
.scala files to the output folder). It's not strictly necessary to
remove these settings, but it's advisable. This should improve the
behaviour of tools which generate Eclipse projects programmatically (eg.
Maven).

There have been some minor changes to the way syntax highlight colour
preferences are stored ... if things don't look quite as you'd expect
then I recommend resetting them to their defaults and redo any
customization you had previously.

There are persistent issues with dependency management which might show
us after upgrading. If you experience hangs or extremely slow builds
then I recommend locating and deleting the .manager folders that you
will find at the top level of your Scala project. I expect this issue to
be resolved in 2.8.0 which will make use of a significantly improved
dependency management mechanism.

Just one note: Are you accumulating changes from RC1 too? Reading the list below, it seemed like a dejavu :) If yes, (sorry my memory fails me right now) IMHO it might be better to list just the RC2-RC1 diff.

Carsten,

I cannot reproduce the problem, Eclipse is offering me a normal upgrade to
2.7.3.RC1.

You should make sure that in your list of update sites you only include the
stable plugin update site, and not the nightly (unsupported) site. That is,
you should have the following in your list:

http://www.scala-lang.org/scala-eclipse-plugin

but *NOT* the following:

http://www.scala-lang.org/scala-eclipse-plugin-nightly

If you see this second update site in your list, please remove it (using
the "Manage sites" button) and refresh the list. You should then be offered
an upgrade to 2.7.3.RC1.

Please let me know if you encounter further difficulties.

If you set the version of the plugin in your pom.xml you need to change it,
Else calling "mvn -U compile " the next time you compile is enough.
