Selection bug / possible KDE integration bug due to linking pictures

Hi everybody

I'm experiencing very strange behaviour with Kubuntu 9.04 / 9.10 and
OO 3.x both distributed versions and manually installed ones, which makes
Open Office practically unusable.

Scrolling in the slide selector on the left in the default view makes it
always jump back to the selected slide.
Selecting slides in slide sorter immediately unselects everything.

The selected slides flash which seem to indicate its some sort of focus bug.

More testing revealed that this is related to linking pictures.

I can generate the bug with the following:

- Create presentation
- Add linked picture
- Copy the page several times lets say 30 times

Can anybody reproduce this?

Under windows and Ubuntu from a stick this is no issue only under
KDE I get this problem.

Best,
Nikolai

By that I assume that it works without issue in a Gnome desktop? Is that
correct?

Surprisingly not. I'm running Kubuntu and if I add the Gnome environment to
the installation and am running Gnome it still doesn't work.

Only in a pure (untainted) Ubuntu with Gnome environment started from an USB-
Stick it seems to work.

Interesting... I installed KDE on top of a gnome install (Ubuntu 9.10)
to test a friend's system and OOo seemed to work. Flushed out KDE as I
tend to view KDE as a bloat. In any event, I'll be happy to try with a
test system tomorrow it you'd like.

I do know in the past that OOo and KDE have had issues. You mention that
you have both OOo and (U)OOo installed - can you provide information
regarding the versions of both, and if you have separate
~/.openoffice.org folders for each? Also please clarify when you say
"Only in a pure (untainted) Ubuntu with Gnome environment started from
an USB-Stick it seems to work". What does that mean? Does OOo work it
properly installed on a drive?

Thanks.

I remember that 9.04 installed with a modified version of OOo.
I had some trouble (as a new Linux user) to get 9.04 to install
3.1.x a few weeks before 9.10 came out.  Updating 9.04 to 9.10
worked fine and I had no trouble with OOo after the upgrade.
I use Gnome, but have the KDE as an optional desktop.  Both seems
to work fine for me.

In order to minimize incompatibilities with old libraries, config files etc. I'm
trying this from live versions of the distributions booted from an USB-Stick.
So in Kubuntu (KDE) 9.10 it doesn't work
in Ubuntu (Gnome) 9.10 it does work
on Windows with OOPortable it also works.

Additionally I tried the official OOo Version from openoffice.org in Kubuntu but
this also did not work.

I also wanted to compile from source but this stopped with some strange error
I do not understand. (see below)

I'm currently downloading OpenSuse to try there. Maybe this will help to zero
in on this strange bug.

Best,
Nikolai

I see you've filed a bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openoffice.org/+bug/479551
[Left slide slider jumps back / Slide selector unselects]

Just a thought, what happens if you remove openoffice.org-kde and then try?

If wonder if it is at all related to these slide focus issues (they
were/are gnome, but the gist is that there are multiple other Impress
focus issues):

This does unfortunately not improve the situation. I hope it will be fixed in
some future version as for me this is really a show stopper.

I run Ubuntu 9.04 upgraded to 9.10 with KDE added
(as alternate desktop if needed)
I seem not to have any problems with OOo on my setup.
I also used an Ubuntu 9.04 CD from an ISO file to install
9.04 then let it upgrade itself to 9.10 when it came out.
I cannot get my USB stick to work always with it, but it
most likely is the addon USB card.

BUT as I said, I do not seem to have this trouble.

If there happens to be an old user profile ~/.openoffice.org2/
Close the office.
Rename the possibly corrupted profile ~/.openoffice/3/
Restart the office. Do not let the import wizard import the old settings
from version 2.

In order to avoid such problems in the first place I tried this by running
Kubuntu from an USB-Stick.

So no, definitely no old files flying around.

Cheers,
Nikolai

I also do not have this problem when I run Ubuntu only with Kubuntu. It is
very likely that this is related to some KDE Process stealing focus or doing
some other strange interaction. And probably this whole KDE integration etc.
stuff is not started when using Ubuntu + KDE Desktop.

Best,
Nikolai
