a serious bug causing the corruption of binary attachments in KMail (cf.

revision 780164 (on 2008-02-28) in kdepim3 proper resp. revision 771698
(on 2008-02-07) in kdepim3 enterprise. This bug has been fixed in
kdepim3 proper (with revision 784040; yesterday) and in kdepim3
enterprise (with revision 782964; on 2008-03-06).

The packagers/distributors have been asked to update their packages as
soon as possible.

This bug is still present in kdepim-kmail-3.5.9-4mdv2008.0 and I can see no
bug report regarding it.  Is this work in progress, or should a bug report be
filed?  This is a very serious bug.

Anne in my experience i use kde 3.5.9 from backport (at work) and from cooker (here),
i haven't lost document yet.
Anyway if it has been fixed, as said into bug report, please fill a report and
i'm sure Nicolas or Helio will fix it up.

My 2€ cents.

The bug is in the part that saves attachments.  Directly from the mail message
I can open the somefile.doc attachment in kword and print it from there, but
if I save the file it is 0 bytes long.  Apparently this is typical of what
happens with this bug.

The reason I asked is that I suspected it had been overlooked.  I'll file a
bug report.

It was bug #39378, filed yesterday.  Today it says that a fix is in backports,
but I'm not seeing it in main.backports, where I would expect it.  I'll try
again later today, in case the mirrors haven't caught up yet.

This makes no sense.  First, I got this morning a bug report message saying

Nicolas Lécureuil <neoclust@...> changed:

           What    |Removed                     |Added
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
             Status|NEW                         |RESOLVED
         Resolution|                            |FIXED

--- Comment #1 from Nicolas Lécureuil <neoclust@...>  2008-03-26
07:00:21 CEST ---
a new backport have been issued

Second, if I read his reply that you quoted correctly, he is saying that the
bug does not exist in Mandriva, but it most certainly does.  Yesterday I
needed to save several .doc attachments, and it was not possible.  Every
attachment saved as 0 bytes.

I don't know what to believe now.  I thought this morning's message meant that
it was truly fixed.

The backport to 2008.0 has not reached the mirrors yet (or hadn't when I
rsync'd this morning). It should be there soon.

before you try to save attachment, create or move message to an empty
mail folder.

using knonqueor, open mail folder w/ kwrite or other text editor, do a cursor
drag on attachment.

create an empty file, open file w/ kwrite, center click to fill. close, rename
as whatever.doc.

i have used this trick with mozilla for text, hex, and other type files.
just might work for you until bug is fixed.

For the moment I settled for opening the attachment in kmail and printing from
there.  I'll save the attachments once the bug-fix comes.

Oops - I meant that I opened the .doc files in kword.

Thanks.  Got it now, and I can confirm that the problem is gone.  The
attachments now save correctly and open with appropriate packages.

That would have worked, but I didn't have another one set up at the time.
It's fixed now, though, so I won't bother setting up an alternative.  I tend
to do that only when I want to test something.

Ah, I never upgraded KDE on any of my 2008.0 systems,
so I still have the original release package kdepim-kmail-3.5.7-16,
which does not have this bug apparently.

Thanks for the warning Anne!  I generally avoid KDE updates
if all is working well.  Had some back experiences before.

The package in main-backports does fix it.  However, I guess that for most
people 3.5.9 won't be used until 2008.1, and that version, I'm sure, will
have the fix.

The good news is that the problem was announced  as a warning to users as soon
as the developers knew about it, and the fix announced to distro developers
at the same time.

Well kdepim-kmail-3.5.7 didn't work for me imap and filters
were totally broken...
