Hi all:

Is there anything like server side JavaScript today ?

Please note that i'm aware of the old Netscape technology called
Live wire and keen to know if today we've any other Open Source
infrastructure for server-side JavaScript.

All observations/pointers are welcome.

thanks
Saifi.

Hi Saifi!

Though I am extremely unknowledgeable in Javascript or for that matter
anything related to web development, I once came across this thing called
Aptana Jaxer. Here is the website - http://www.aptana.com/jaxer. It said it
is a 'Mozilla-based application' and hence I read more about it. I have no
other understanding of it any further.

I'm sorry if I've diverted you to the wrong direction.

Regards,

Hi Saifi,

Yes today there is a lot of work being done in server side javascript
Here is a link which will give you a brief information on this topic.

1)
http://www.sitepoint.com/blogs/2009/03/10/server-side-javascript-will-be-as-common-as-php/

2) http://www.sitepoint.com/blogs/2009/02/26/server-side-javascript/

An active group working on Server JS

http://groups.google.com/group/serverjs?pli=1

I have just read about jslibs it is a standalone JavaScript development
runtime environment for using JavaScript as a general-purpose scripting
language.

http://code.google.com/p/jslibs/

But my doubt is if server side JS really takes off how will it be good for
AJAX?
Will it be a + point for AJAX developers?? Because i see that in many AJAX
books in the examples they use scripting languages for Database response. I
am a newbie in AJAX so came to know that recently :P

(Ex: O'Rielly AJAX uses Zend/DB framework or API for DB....So,if we are to
learn AJAX our server should support  PHP or ASP ...So here we end up
learning yet another language.)

I feel with server side JS coding in AJAX will be much cleaner as you will
work on server as well as client in javascript only.

Please correct me if i am wrong.

P.S.: The comments in the
sitepoint<http://www.sitepoint.com/blogs/2009/03/10/server-side-javascript-will-be-as-common-as-php/>blogs
are also helpful in understanding the future of Serverside js

thanks,
