Setting the image of a borderless pull-down popup

I seem to be unable to set the image for a borderless pull-down  
NSPopUpButton. I know that setImage: does nothing, so I set the image  
on the first item of the popup, as the docs say. However this has no  
effect. So then, how do I set the image?
