Dear ones, there's a while since I used Rosegarden the last time, and if I once knew what I will ask, it's long forgotten. I have very little notion of musical theory, so please excuse me if some terms are wrong.

I can not find a way to change the lenght of a "bar", as shown in the ruler of the Track Editor, in musical measures. An example may clarify the question. Suppose that I have created in Hydrogen the drums for Beatles' "Taxman", 130bpm, 4/4 signature, two snare-drum beats per measure (i.e., per pattern, or each of those blue squares we are used to in Hydrogen). Then I would like to create a number of MIDI tracks in Rosegarden which will play along with it.

It would seem logical for me to have the bar-counting ruler aligned with the Hydrogen patterns, so it would advance in 1 for each Hydrogen pattern played (which I suppose to be a "measure"). But I can't for my life to find out how to setup that, and I'm having exactly 5 Hydrogen patterns played for each Rosegarden bar -- which is not exactly something helpful...

So, how can I configure that? And, by the way, if my compass/measure counting is wrong or confused, advice me please... ; )

Thank you and best regards!

Instead of asking you a lot of questions to establish that I am on the right
track with your problem, I will begin by making a guess.

I think you have some drum patterns set up in Hydrogen and some other tracks
set up in Rosegarden, and you want Hydrogen and Rosegarden to start playing at
the same time, so they will be synchronized.

If this is true, you want to tell both applications to sync to JACK transport.

I made some attempt at explaining how to do that in this tutorial.  Look for
"Hydrogen as a Sequencer" and read from there:

Hi, Michael!

Actually this is not the problem -- I can have Hydrogen starting as soon as I press Play in Rosegarden, at least, even if they are not exactly synchronized. The point is that I would like to have the Rosegarden Track Editor  showing the bars -- those segments of the ruler above the tracks, counting 1, 2, 3... -- in sync with each 8-beats Hydrogen pattern. Or, in other words, I'd like Rosegarden to play exactly one of its bars each time that one single "blue square" is played in Hydrogen. I will have to test if this happens automatically when setting up the JACK Transport as you wrote in the tutorial, but it seems to me that there is no way for both programs to know the beat measures of the song in each other...

Thanks and regards!

Dear Fabricio,

So you would like to start jack, then start Rosegarden in hopes that they will play at the same rate....without a transport control like jack to talk between the two applications there is no guarantee that the two applications will stay in sync. over time.

but it sounds like this is what you would like to do....so

you will need to adjust either Hydrogens tempo or RG's tempo.

In RG's mainWindow:
Composition -> Add Tempo Change...

apply change to whole document.

NOTE:
as stated earlier the is no guarantee the two programs will stay synced.  I'm almost certain it will not--for any meaningful length of time.

I hope this helps.

Sincerely,
Julie S.
