Sewing Question

Hi, I know a lot of people on this list sew. I need to sew something onto a pair of "compression shorts" that are basically polyester and spandex. I am assuming I should use a ballpoint needle, but I thought I'd check with others here who have more experience. What are your suggestions for type of needle, size and type of thread?
