Shading wouldn't work

Hello,

I've tried to dive into TikZ, but already the example for \shade in the manual won't work. It just won't produce any output.

I'm using LyX, TeX Live 2008 and PDFLaTeX on Windows, if that matters.

BTW: The Beamer themes with the "shaded" title backgrounds _do_ work, however. Doesn't Beamer use PGF for these effects?
