Show Tree Conflicts very slow

I wonder if someone can give me some advice. On large projects (with thousands of files), when I choose Show Tree Conflicts after a merge, it either takes an extraordinarily long time, or hangs Eclipse entirely. But if I do "svn status" on the command line, it takes about a second.

What exactly is Subclipse doing when I choose this command?

When it's hanging, I can watch the network connections to my Subversion server, which is on localhost, and I see Eclipse making various requests.

Also, I sometimes see a "Building workspace" task appear when I choose this command. But my workspace was already built, and this project has no builders. Is Subclipse doing something that might trigger a workspace rebuild?

My workspace has a lot of projects. The delays seem to be smaller if I start from a new, empty workspace, and only add a few projects. Which makes me think it's a function of workspace size. Is there anything Subclipse does that would depend on the size of the workspace?

I'm using Subclipse 1.6.5, with Eclipse (Carbon) 3.5.1 on Mac OS 10.6.1.

I'd appreciate any help you can offer,
Jacob
