Shutdown loses unsaved OOo document changes

As a recent convert to Ubuntu from Win I have a question regarding
shutdown on Ubuntu 8.10.  If I have unsaved changes in OOo document or
files in jEdit and I perform a shutdown then it appears to kill the
applications without giving them a chance to ask the user whether to
save their changes.  Is this something that I can do anything about or
do I just have to be careful when shutting down?

I've used windows for thirty years and it never asked me if I want to
save work during shutdown. When I clicked on the shutdown that is what
it did.

Was not aware that Windows was around in 1979. Did it run on an HP-85?

Unlikely I think as it has only been around for about 25.  I have been
using it for most of that time but I try to keep it quiet :)

I have just checked in case MS induced senility is setting in with me
(see previous comments).  I booted into XP, opened an MS Word doc,
edited it and started a shut down.  Word popped up a box asking if I
wanted to save it.

I'm sorry for my first reply. It seems I was mistaken. I booted into windows and open a ms office word doc and it asked if I wanted to save during shut down. I did the same with open office document in Ubuntu 9.04, and during shut down it asked if I wanted to save the doc.

Sorry for typing without checking.
Stephen.

I may have exaggerated a little. My first computer was in early eighties a commodore 64.

Since then I was with MS dos and all kinds of Windows as they came out.

I was also incorrect about when windows shuts down. It did ask if I wanted to save the MS word doc, so I tried it on Ubuntu 9.04. Ubuntu 9.04 asked during shutdown if I wanted to save an Open Office Doc.

The shutdown script will send a SIGTERM to all running processes.  They
then are suppose to receive the signal and cleanly shutdown before the
OS shutsdown the computer.  Apparently, OO does not follow this
convention or if it does, does not have the ability to alert the user to
cleanly shutdown the application.

As a workaround, OO will attempt to recover files from previously
interrupted sessions.  I have found the document recovery works well,
even when my notebook has not shutdown cleanly.
