Small Neo Baroque Organ

[Forgive me if this gets sent twice.]

Dear jOrgan users:

Here is a project I've been working on, free for your use.

Small Neo Baroque Organ, based on a Schlicker instrument, built in the mid 1960's.

The jOrgan model has two manuals and pedal. Twenty-one stops. The only additions I made to the Schlicker were a Spitzfloete 4' on the Great. I also added a full transposer.

The jOrgan disposition is made to be used with a soundcard. It could be adapted to work with Fluidsynth.

The disposition and soundfont are together in a zip file.

http://www.geocities.com/pcstratman/organ/organ.html

The three demo MP3s have a little crackle in them.

Unfortunately, Geocities has a limit on how much data can be transferred in an hour.

If you get an error message, try again later.

Greetings Paul

For some reason I get an error message when trying to open the unzipped disposition file.  I'm using J-organ 3.4.  When I try to load the disposition file I get a message "no valid disposition file".  The sound fonts unpacked fine and are loaded in.   I got the same error message with someone elses sample organ recently but have had no trouble with Praestant1 and all my older version 2 jorgan dispositions load perfectly fine in version 3

Any ideas?   Do I need a particularly up to date unzipper programme?

Hi Paul,

Thanks for sharing! I don't get an error message when unzipping the files, but I do get the "no valid disposition file" when trying load the disposition into jOrgan 3.3.2. What version of jOrgan was the disposition created in?

Since I do not have a soundfont-capable sound card, I had no choice but
to convert Paul's Small Neo-Baroque Organ to Fluidsynth. Both the
disposition file AND the soundfont had to be modified.  But now it works
great! No crack up sounds on my system under Fludisynth! The transposer
does not work with Fluidsynth.  Possibly Fluidsynth ignores the MIDI
Continuous Controller RPN 100/101 and CC 6 sequence used to set "Master
Coarse Tuning".

As I could not get the bank/patch numbering scheme used in the soundfont
and disposition to work with Fluidsynth, I edited the soundfont (with
Viena) such that all the presets were designated in bank 0, and all the
patch numbers were designated uniquely within bank zero, i.e.,
   bank 00b, patch 00p became bank 000, patch 0bp
for each of the presets in the soundfont.  Possibly Fluidsynth ignores
MIDI CC 0 (bank select) messages.

Of course, the corresponding MIDI messages for each Rank in the
disposition had to be adjusted accordingly for the modified numbering
scheme.

Fluidsynth should recognize the different banks. Just change bank 20, 21 and 22 (I don't remember what number I used) to banks 0, 1, and 2.

Glad it works for you.

I knew the transposer wouldn't work in Fluidsynth. The tremolo and swell probably need some adjustment in the Fluidsynth conversion.

You're probably wondering why I have "PEDAL TRANSPOSE" as a coupler. My pedalboard is homemade, using a cheap eKeys 37 keyboard, with an old pedalboard wired to the eKeys contacts. "PEDAL TRANSPOSE" makes the adjustment so I don't have to transpose each stop and pedal coupler. For those with more modern pedalboards, set the coupler to "0".

I also use a Behringer FCB1010 foot controller, and three M-Audio keyboards. I'm sure everyone has to make adjustments to make someone elses disposition work on their system.

Paul.

Hm, the disposition works fine here.

Could someone please send me the contents of the debug log after receiving the "no valid disposition" message?

Yes...the Swell, for sure, needs adjustment.  Moving the Swell controller
from full closed to full open barely makes any difference in the sound
level.

I haven't worked with the Tremolo.  But I did turn it on once while I was
testing and thought to myself that I wasn't really sure if it was on or
not!

I did not know for sure whether Fluidsynth responded to bank-select CC0
commands, so I simply put everything on bank 0.  I didn't userstand how
your disposition's bank settings (CC0: 10, 11, 12) were being mapped to a
soundfont whose presets were designated for banks 0, 1, and 2.  But since
Fluidsynth was not making any sound with your as-distributed disposition
and soundfont configuration, I simply took the expeditious way out and
converted everything to bank 0 -- which I understood.

Hi all,

For a simple tremulant using the fluidsynth extension and bank 0
remove all the SoundBlaster MIDI messages and add
Engaged    set 176   set 1  set 20
Disengaged set 176   set 1  set 0

Changing the 'set 20' will adjust the tremulant rate...

Hello Paul,

Thanks for this info on the use of banks in FluidSynth, and for
releasing the Small Neo Baroque Organ soundfont in the first place.
The ranks synthesized with KlangSynth are surprisingly resemblant of
real pipe sounds.

Your disposition loaded ok using jOrgan 3.4 beta 1.
I adapted it to use FluidSynth, requiring the above configuration setup.
Since the modern skin i have here does not have a swell style, i
modified it by borrowing this from the theater skin.
It only requires to cut and paste the portion between
-<style>
      <name>swell</name>
     and
<style>

from the .xml file of the theater skin into that of the modern skin, to
add the corresponding .png files (swell0.png to swell9.png) to the ones
already in the modern skin and to compress everything into a .zip file.

The result is a swell style element that matches rather well with the
overall look of the modern skin.
If of any use, the modified modern skin and the disposition file
configured for FluidSynth use can be emailed to anybody needing it, or
if you prefer it added to your download server.
If of interest, just let me know how i can best get it to you.

Thanks again for the nice soundfont and best regards.

Erik.

New demo MP3s in stereo with no crackle.

Updated page, too. Note the informal "Terms of use."

P. S.  Erik, why don't you e-mail me the new skin, and I'll put it up. (I'll work on getting pictures of the Schlicker to Graham for an authentic graphic skin sometime in the future!)

On my system the "set 20" controls the trem DEPTH --- not the rate.  I
haven't found a way to change the trem RATE with MIDI commands.

In looking more closely at Paul's disposition, I noticed that he used the
PERIOD (.) character as the text for a "Label" element.  I'm sure this was
done in order to have at least one very small character as the text value
in order to prevent jOrgan from inserting its default text value of
"Label".  What he really wanted, I'm sure, was something invisible.  But
the normal space character will not work.  It is just ignored.

This reminded me that there is a "Special" key sequence that generates a
"hard space" value in text, so that you don't have to actually use a
visible character like the period (.).

Does anyone recall what this hard-space key entry sequence is? (I know it
is something like ctrl-alt-space or ctrl-shift-space or the like...but it
is hard to find in any of the meagre documentation.)  I tried to find it
in Bruce Miles' excellent jOrgan documentation, but his web site is all
messed up right now.

AFAIK, the only way to do it is to edit the Vibrato LFO in the soundfont
itself.  I don't know of a way of doing it from within jOrgan (with a
softsynth)

I made an attempt at a Schlicker skin. Downloadable at my web page.

http://ftp.pwp.att.net/p/a/pastorstratman/

An updated disposition is being developed.

I made some revisions to a new Schlicker skin. See it and download it at

http://ftp.pwp.att.net/p/a/pastorstratman/

I also made a revised disposition to go with the new skin.
