From what I can see in the Webadmin, the Default SMARTHOST/Routing option does not have a provision for authentication.

But our ISP requires SMTP Authentication.

Is there a file in /etc/courier where one can enter username and password for SMTP authentication?

esmtproutes.

But why send the mail through upstream's server when you already have a
mail server?

Yes, it's the "esmtpauthclient" file.  Read the docs or search the 'courier' man
page for the explanation of how to use it to authenticate when you are talking
to particular mail server.

I'm setting up a mail server myself and running into a lot of problems
with servers (one in particular) rejecting mail from us because our
senderbase reputation is poor (even though I have rDNS and SPF set up).
Sending through our ISP's smarthost avoids that problem. I'm waiting for
DNS to update and then I will start signing with DKIM/DomainKeys and
maybe that will help, eventually.
