SmartSVN 6.0.2 and Show Changes

I saw a thread the other day that says that the remote side shows changes and yet they do a compare and there are no changes.

This seems to be a serious issue with smartSVn 6.0.2, I have seen the same thing modified shows on both sides and yet when I do a show changes they are identical. And yet if I view the actual revision in the transaction window and show changes I see the full changes to the files.

This is causing some serious code loss in our company and this needs to be fixed ASAP.

What kind of Compare are you doing? Show changes only works locally, so not
seeing remote changes is expected behavior (though we have an RFE here to
automatically perform remote compare, if no local changes are present). Does
Compare with Revision also not work for you?

Then I think you need to seriously look at the RMB menu on the files.

If I see that there is a change and RMB on that file, the only option I see is show changes. If there is an option to compare with Revision I do not see it listed in the RMB context menu.

Personally I can’t vouch for others, but when we see that local and remote has changed and the is an option to show changes we expect that it is going to show the changes from local to remote.

And like all Eclipse plugins that I have used there are clear indications as to when it is going to compare locally, as compared to comparing with SVN .

This program is confusing enough without that distinction, and making it hard for us to learn the program.

And it would be extremely nice if there was an Eclipse plugin that worked like Subversive or Subclipse. Subversive is the most popular SVN plugin and the way it works shits all over smartSVn as far as ease of use goes.

Sorru but Show Changes should compare local to remote, and there should be show changes locally as being clearly marked as being so.

I should also point out that when I actually use the menus in the main window the compare revision option is always greyed out.

Show changes in my eyes means I want to see the changes to local compared to SVN, I have eclipse that has the option of comparing locally and it does a far better job at it.

It should be enabled, when a versioned file is selected. If not, please send

Send to where?

I would also like to add that the keyboard shortcut still works, and that you have also ignored the fact that RMB context menu has no option to compare against the subversion system.

I come from other tools where the compare is ALWAYS against the header, hence I do show compare in this case and it goes and compares against the header. If I wish to compare against a particular revision then there is an option call compare revision.

I have to say when coming from such tools as Subversive and Subclipse smartSVN is not really smart at all.

I personally do not need to compare against my local copy changes as my IDE does that for me.

Hello Andy,

> Send to where?

Thanks, image received. It looks like you have the focus in the directory tree
(it's the header gradient which denotes the currently active view). Hence
file-related actions are disabled. When putting the focus in the file table,
it will work.

> I would also like to add that the keyboard shortcut still works, and that

I couldn't reproduce this: The shortcut only works if the focus is in the file
table.

You can configure the context menu in the Preferences - User Interface -

Are you serious?

Anyone who is worth their weight in gold, would be using the RMB option and that should be compare changes should default to the revision of SVN and not the local. If I need or want to check local the compare to local would be better.

I think the whole menu system and the way it is layed out is totally wrong.

There needs to be a clearer indication that the compare is going to be done against SVN, and / or to the local.

Show changes to me means that I wish to work against the latest in the Head of the SVN, which you don’t do. If you take an Eclipse plugin like Subversive for instance. It has a team menu with sub menus that we know right away that it does all its work against the SVN, then there is a local menu or a compare to menu that then says I want to compare to local, SVN revision etc.

I like the idea that I can quickly see the local change and not the server changes.

Not all products are same, and they don't have to be. After using perforce for more than 4 years, i found the whole SVN thing weird, i.e. pristine copy, local copy. Now I am used to smartsvn. very good in its class.

Use it for a month or so, every thing will fall in its place.

That way is so much easier to understand than the current system you have in place. Anyone like myself who has picked this up is just getting confused on what is for what.

That’s the thing I have been using it for 2 months.

And the fact that I CAN NOT RMB a file and compare it against the SVN is a HUGE productivity limitation, I am forced to go to the windows menu to do the job or use the keyboard shortcut. Secondly as I stated it is NOT clear enough when it is checking against local or remote.

Making those changes will make the product better and more productive.

Every SVN tool I have used as a clear understanding with the menu that it is either Team->Compare (which means it is going to check the SVN) or compare to->local (Which means it will compare the local history for changes.

To have an RMB menu that has show changes and NOTHING else, one is automatically going to ASSUME that it is going to compare remotely. When it doesn’t, because there is no other option to do a remote compare in the RMB context menu.

If you are happy with these then that’s good for you, but as a new user who has been using it for 2 months I have pointed out some very useful short comings and a learning curve that doesn’t need to be there if some small changes are made.

As pointed out, you can configure to have Compare With Revision in the context
menu already. Anyway, we agree that Show Changes should act smarter in case of
a remotely changed file. So that's on the RFE list.

I think it would be a good idea, to use a little bit more kindness in your line. There is now salutation and no finish line, which is generally impolite in my opinion for such a discussion group.

That is in general a good hint, but SmartSVN is specially not designed like a eclipse plugin. For all developments, there eclipse is not the useful IDE for, this kind of standalone subversion client is top.

Re: SmartSVN 6.0.2 and Show Changes

I have asked many questions here like how to do this/that, etc while I could have got that answer by reading the doc, who reads them ;)
and I have got those answers from fellow SmartSVN users or the support.

I agree with you that "Show Changes" is wrongly worded, maybe it should be "Compare with Pristine" or Local compare, etc. I quickly figured out what the option was doing coz the left side is Pristine copy and on the right side is working copy. With some documentation on SVN that I had read earlier, both pristine and working are on the same harddrive. So it is local compare.

Maybe a "Compare with Head" option along side "Compare with revision" would be a good Idea?

1. Compare with Head (Useful to check the diff with the head version)
2. Compare with Revision.... (I dont know why I will use it other than head, i have never compared anything other than head, I dont know if it makes any sense to compare local change to a change in repo other than head, but then it is already there, maybe you guys should do some userstudy on this)
3. Compare with Pristine (Very usefull if you are not on the network or VPN connected)

I would not mind having those options. (not sure if you can do that already, but hidden somewhere :) )

Yeah it is not obvious to add the option "Compare with revision" to the context menu, I got to know by asking. SmartSVN menus and accelerators are quite highly configurable.

In my opnion using any new software has its learning curve, we always compare the new software with the experience we have with the older one and try to find one-to-one feature match,  I had mine with Perforce and with SmartSVN. At one point I loved Microsofts VSS.

That way is so much easier to understand than the current system you have in place. Anyone like myself who has picked this up is just getting confused on what is for what.

Show Changes for an SVN utility should not default to local compare, and that is wrong when smartSVN does this. If I want and/or need to then there should be an option to compare to local. And or a particular revision.

I think you guys would benefit a great deal by checking these plugins out for Eclipse, because they are structured for productivity. smartSVN so far is not geared for productivity and a developer as to take to long to work out what menu is for local and remote. It might be second nature to a lot of seasoned users to smartSVN, but not when you pick it up for the first time. I spend far to long trying to work out what menu is for what, when a simple compare to->revision or compare to-> local would be easier and quicker to see what it does.

Also I touched on the fact that it would also be good if you had an Eclipse plugin, so that we did not have to leave Eclipse when that IDE is geared to team development.

Thanks, image received. It looks like you have the focus in the directory tree

file-related actions are disabled. When putting the focus in the file table,

You can configure the context menu in the Preferences - User Interface -

Ok, hope you will still keep the compare ONLY with Pristine copy. (The way current feature works)

As pointed out, you can configure to have Compare With Revision in the context
menu already. .. So that's on the RFE list.

We have introduced Show Changes in version 5 (I think) which combined
Transaction's compare, Change Report and comparison with pristine copy. The
motivation was (1) to have the toolbar button (=Show Changes) work in File-,
Directory- and Transactions-view and (2) to have exactly one menu item for one
"task" which could be intuitively formulated as: "There is something modified,
red -- show me what has changed!"

We think splitting this menu item into multiple ones again won't make things
more intuitive. But when performing Show Changes on a file (modified or not),
SmartSVN could *optionally* ask what to compare:

- Working copy vs. pristine copy (default, if locally modified)
- Working copy vs. HEAD (default, if not modified)
- Pristine copy vs. HEAD

What do you all think?

We merged different compare menu items to one ("Show Changes"), so the user
just has to remember one accelerator. It is not possible to have different
menu items with the same accelerator, even if they are enabled orthogonal to
each other.

For one, I do not have any problem with the current option set.

The idea of diff option showing the diff with the head (repo file) when SmartSVN knows that the remote file has changed is good. BUT
What if the i am working offline, then Smartsvn will not know if the remote file has modified, then it will show diff with pristine copy, if so then the User is again upset that he didnt see what he wanted to see.

There are 2 option anyway, Show Changes (Local diff) and Compare with Ref. People who have used commandline svn will quickly figure out what they mean.

I am pretty happy with what is there right now, except that i would "love" to have "Compare with Head" too with no dialogs in between. So I am not really complaining.

additionally,
The ability to selectivly revert or change lines in the file through local diff is priceless and perfect, i dont what that diff window to be made any more complicated with head changes in there too (please)

I like the "Compare with Revision" dialog for comparing file changes in the Files area but I would like some changes.  I'll tell you the situation then I'll tell you what changes I'd like.

Situation

Another programmer is making changes to a branch and wants me to update my working copy, test the changes, and update the trunk.  What I would like to do is see the changes he has made before doing that.

Proposed Change

"Compare with Revision" allows me to compare my working or pristine copy of a file with another branch or tag or URL but if I need to see the changes for another file I have to reselect the branch again in "Compare with Revision".  Please restore my previous branch, tag or URL selection.  That speeds up compares for multiple files.

You can put a "Reset" button on the "Compare with Revision" dialog to reset to default values.

Thanks, Vincent

The smart way to work as this program is called smartSVN, is to work in this manner.

In a team environment or not, if the local copy changes the compare should be against the SVN head, unless explicitly told otherwise. We do ALL our work in an IDE that has local compare, but its nice to know we can fall back to smartSVN if we need too. To have to manually add an option to the RMB context menu to achieve this is counterproductive, and that has been acknowledge. But it should not have to be a manual thing the user sets up.

When we sync our changes we might have 15-30 files that need syncing, most of the time they are a one way sync so we can just do the update/commit. But when we need to do this productively we need to compare against the head and not what has changed against our local copy. This is where the confusion arises because the program assumes we know how to set this up to be in the RMB context menu, it also assumes we know that it defaults to checking the local (pristine copy) which is not what the good majority of people who use this program will be doing.

The only time we revert back to doing a compare against the local copies, is when a merge or conflict has gone wrong. Which in our case is not very often.

This program works in the reverse, and I made the note to check out the Eclipse plugins because they are geared to developers who work in a team environment who need to constantly check against the head of SVN, smartSVn doesn’t do this productively and becomes more of a hindrance for us who need it to work this way.

Compares with local copies should be considered as a last resort, this program is called smartSVN the name suggests that it is a SVN tool to help us be productive against the SVN repository and not our local copies. Otherwise this program should be called smartLocalCompare.

A user can be easily mislead by the way a program works in the field it is supposed to be of benefit, in my eyes I have highlighted that this program is not geared to the use that it was intentially designed and that is for a tool to be used against the SVN repository as its main feature.

Have a good think about that for a minute then put yourself in our shoes, were local compares are taken care of by the IDE’s in which we use.

So in answer to what do I think?

If locally modified it SHOULD compare against SVN, if there is an issue that makes the local cache copy invalid or wrong then an option to compare back over a list of revisions would be great. This is exactly why I asked that you should look at the Subversive and Subclipse and other SVN plugins for Eclipse they are geared to this type of work because that is what developers need more, a compare against local is only ever done when a developer does a bad merge and a rollback on SVN is required.

I think smartSVN needs to be more aware of developers and how they might work with this program, and I will say it one last time compare aginst local copies should be last resort to get a resolved conflict.

If this is not the intention you are pushing this great program, then maybe an Eclipse plugin that worked the way developers NEED it to work would be more beneficial that could also work with smartSVN. Currently this is impossible if I try to use smartSVN and Subversive to work together as it makes one or the other out of date with the version numbers.

I think it is kinda stupid to say that SmartSVN should be smart coz the name has Smart in It. It does smart stuff.

Apple Macbook is made from apples. oh yeah.
