Hi,

I was discussing with some guys in #solaris @ freenode.net . They said that KDE does not run under Solaris 10, just under OpenSolaris based dists. But I've read about KDE on Solaris 10, in blastwave for example.

Can someone clarify this to me?
Thanks for any help.

Hi,
AFAIK only KDE 3.4 is available for S10

You might be able to compile KDE 4.1.3 following the steps at
http://techbase.kde.org/Projects/KDE_on_Solaris, also there are some
binary packages for S10/X64 there - I don't know their status.

As regards the current KDE 4.3 on S10, I have no idea, although I know
that ade is doing some builds of the 4.3 repository on nv 115 so it
may be possible to build it with some effort.

There are a few releases done for KDE 4 on Solaris 10. You have KDE 4.2.4 and 4.3.0 (both 32-bit and 64-bit versions). One copy is stored on the http://solaris.bionicmutton.org website built on Solaris 10 and OSOL snv_111b (aka OpenSolaris 2009.06). The merged distribution of KDE 4.3.0 and OSOL comes on Korona 0.0.2 (http://www.genunix.org/dist/korona/Korona-0.0.2.iso). Use this to help review work on KDE 4.3.x work on Solaris 10. Belenix is also releasing KDE 4 on Belenix 0.8.

Recommendation Note: Only use KDE 4.3.x and higher for Solaris 10 and OpenSolaris 2009.06-based distros.

Blastwave.org maintains KDE 3.5.10/Koffice 1.6.3/Amarok 1.4.10 for Solaris 8-10 and OpenSolaris-based distributions. KDE 3.4.3 is no longer used at Blastwave.org.

Hi,

KDE-4.1.4 is the latest version which can run on Solaris 10 (due
missing python >= 2.5, libxcb support and few others which are needed
for 4.2 and higher).Yes, you can kick off Xserver and old python and
put the new ones, but people are using S10 due its stability and
maintenance and I wouldn't recommend do this. I was trying build KDE
with minimal or zero impacts to own S10 system all the time. I have
KDE 4.1.4 on Ultra20m2 with SOL 10 U6.

When I have a time, next month or two, I can provide SVR4 packages for
S10, but without any guarantee.

Ben Taylor's 4.1.3 SVR4 are there ...

I think that I will install Solaris 10.
I tested Belenix and Korona 0.0.2 in two different computers. (kind of old )
Belenix asks root password for maintence in both of them, and Korona asks root password too in one, and in other I cant even boot the DVD.
Do you know if there is a limitation in terms of hardware ? ( I know about SSE 's instruction in Belenix).

Thanks in advance.

KDE for Solaris 10 would be great.
I'll try it.

Hi,
Korona was built with SSE2. If you CPU  does not support SSE/SSE2 and
you're able to install opensolaris on that machine, you could build
the KDE packages locally.  The build process should disable SSE
support then (not tested).
