Some Netiquette Notes for our groupHi Everyone!
I'm breaking down our usual "Monthly Message" into two shorter parts; they include this Netiquette message, will usually be posted sometime near the middle of the month, and our usual "Message from your Moderators" that will appear close to the first of each month. ************************ Some Netiquette Hints for our group These suggestions will help you communicate effectively with our group. Trimming Replies; Please remove extraneous information from your posts. If quoting a previous message, it is preferable to quote only the minimum amount of text that pertains to your reply, not the entire message. This streamlines your answer and will be especially appreciated by our Daily Digest subscribers who have to scroll through all of each message to get to the next message. A good rule of thumb is not to have the material you quote be longer than your reply. New members to our group are moderated for a short time, and the group's moderators often are able to remove unnecessary bandwidth from the posts of our newest members, but after a short time members are expected to do this themselves. Daily Digest subscribers, please be careful not to re-post the entire digest with your reply. Keep Subject Headers Updated; If you start a new thread or if the topic drifts, remember to provide a new header for the thread. This will help other members scan subject lines quickly to find information on a particular topic. Before posting, please re-read and edit your post to make sure it is a useful and positive addition to our discussions. Thanks for being part of Yahoo's Backpacking Light group! Netiquette Notes for our groupHi Everyone! Hope you're enjoying the messages here!
Near the middle of each month we post these suggestions to help our newest members communicate effectively with our group. They are not aimed at any specific individual, or at any recent threads. TRIM YOUR REPLIES; Please remove unnecessary information from your posts, such as headers and footers. When quoting from a previous message it is only necessary to include the e-mail address of the original poster and you can just quote the parts of the text that pertain specifically to your reply, not the entire message. This will streamline your answer. A good rule of thumb is not to have the material you quote be longer than your reply. Daily Digest subscribers, please be careful not to re-post the entire digest with your reply. KEEP SUBJECT HEADERS UPDATED; If you start a new thread or when the topic drifts, remember to provide it with a new header. This keeps replies to a specific topic together for easy reference. Before hitting "send", please take a minute to read and edit your post to be sure it is a useful, positive and polite addition to our discussions. Re: Netiquette Notes for our groupWas on a list about mid 1990's about packing.
They had two rules. #1) Use common sense. #2) Failure to use obey rule you will be banned from the list for 30 years. The person who typed up the rules goofed. It was suppose to be 30 days but they did not change it and no one ever violated rule #1 while I was on that list. That list changed over into several others. Re: Netiquette Notes for our groupSorry to disappoint Ralph, but only your base weight was 6 oz. Unfortunately you
splurged on the consumables and carried Don's full 9lbs with you!! Still, I guess you can always eat your words. Re: Toothpaste, RECALLSeems to me the message is: DON'T BUY CHINESE! They have put poison
in wheat gluten because it confuses the test for protein and gives a higher reading (sickening and killing hundreds, maybe thousands of dogs and cats, and who knows what it has done to humans who consumed products with that poisoned wheat gluten). They put anti-freeze in cold medicine which killed a number of children in Central America. And now there's the toothpaste thing. DON'T BUY CHINESE PRODUCTS! It's obvious there are no standards for products coming out of that country, and some unscrupulous business owners are doing everything they can, including putting poison into food products, to increase their bottom line. Re: Netiquette Notes for our groupLOL! As moderators we try to use common sense in enforcing our
netiquette suggestions. Generally we're pretty understanding of those oversights that occur to everyone occasionally. However, rudeness, SPAM, and seriously off-topic posts can get their originators banned here for a _minimum_ of 300 years! :o) Cheers, Don L. Just wondering how FAR off topic could a person go without getting banned from this list? Or how close to the banning line could a person get without getting flamed?
