Sound notification

Hi all,

I'm a newbie to Linux and just recently installed Sylpheed-Claws 2.1.1.
This is a great program, very fast and lots of functions (too many
perhaps ;-). I have a simple problem. I want a sound notification of
new mail, just a simple system beep. I know there is the command 'tput
bel' and that works when I type it in a terminal and press 'Enter'. But
I can't get it to work in Configuration > Preferences > Receive > Run
Command. Do I have to write a script, what would be the right syntax?
Thanks.

Joseph

PS: Another thing: Why don't new emails (with no filter applied) don't
show up in the Inbox automatically? How can that be set?

It works there because "tput" is a command that queries the terminal.
If it is not executed from a terminal, it won't work.

No, you don't need a script. You can make sure that your command is
executed in a terminal:
 <my-terminal> -e "tput bel"
where <my-terminal> is for example xterm, or gnome-terminal, or
whatever.

On the other hand, this will have an annoying terminal window pop up
briefly.

Possibly the easiest solution is to install the "beep" program, which
lets you beep in all frequencies and morse-code sequences you can
possibly think of, and which does not need a terminal to do so.

Where do they show up? What do you have to do for them to show up?

Or, more simple :
play my_file.wav
(under Mandriva, play is in the sox package)

New messages show up in the left window (Inbox) and I have to click on
that before they show up in the contents window of that mailbox on the
right. Did I miss a setting here?

Thanks, I finally managed to get it running, had some minor
configuration problems. Anyway, it is nice and funny. I'm now wondering
about composing different melodies for all the mailboxes, so that you
don't have to bother interrupting your work when an "unimportant tune"
sounds. Perhaps this could work using the filter functions but would
probably require further changes in the program. Maybe an interesting
additional feature?

Yes, it can be done by filters, though it might be a bit cumbersome.

The notification plugin also has a module to trigger a command when new
mail arrives. The CVS version of this one can limit command execution
to new mails that end up in some specific folders. It is planned to
make it possible to have an arbitrary number of such commands (so you
could, for example, assign different beep tones to each folder or
group of folders). It may take a while for me to implement this,
though, since I am rather short on time lately :-)
