Sorry for some period of silence! Recently I've known that
days. But I still don't have enough time for ST development and
maintaining and would be very appreciative if someone will help me.

Regards,
Yury.

P.S. For near three months I will not be home (now I'm in Germany) and I
haven't got access to my computer (only laptop) so I'm not sure that the
ST-gtk2 shapshot I'll upload to the site will be the recent version.
I'll be able to fix this only after December, 15.

Recently I've found a couple of bugs in ST and fixed them. First is
incorrect memory allocation in Jack driver. In ST-gtk2 this causes to
segfault, while in ST-gtk1 doesn't. But the bug presents in both STs so
it's better to fix it to avoid possible crashes. The second is buffer
overflow when using UTF-8 locale with some languages (also cause ST to
crash).

Hi folks!

I've kindly appreciated your ST testing results :) I'll try to fix all
found bugs at the next snapshot, expect some problems with graphics
performance. I know about them and this is a really headache for me.
I've rewrite the tracker code according to new Gtk+-2 specifications,
although patter scrolling is too slow and CPU-consuming. It seems to me
that Gtk+-2 has much poorer performance than Gtk+-1. So I'd like to do
some profiling, but I'll implement this after the finishing of the most
part of porting.

What about VST support, I'm planning to improve ST greatly and also to
add plugins suport. But I like LADSPA and LV2 more than VST. These two
are portable and open-source in a contrary to closed and
Windows-oriented VST technology. Besides this there is VST-LADSPA plugin
allowing one to use VST plugins for programs supporting LADSPA.

Cheers!
Yury.
Yury is lonesome on this project : what do you think of the FST libray ?
I read the mainstreams project as Ardour, Rosegarden and Muse can be run
with.
I tested (again...:) some trackers as SkaleTracker (no VST support for

Ah, previous mail went private, since I just clicked reply...

Anyway, first bugs found:

Attempting to load a stereo wav-file brings up a tiny window
with nothing in it instead of the channel chooser dialog.
It only closes with escape, so I can't load stereo files.

Clicking on the Instr and Sample selector arrows makes them
scroll through at least 3 or four numbers no matter how short my click.
All the other number selector boxes work fine.

And thanks for the work. I think this will be as usable as
the GTK1 version soon, if the speed issues can be worked out.
Apart from the stop-motion animation I mentioned previously,
the pattern list box on the left doesn't quite keep up with
the song, either, so if I have short patterns and fast tempo (1)
and BPM (180) settings, it doesn't stop on the right pattern
when I hit space. (Still haven't looked at other people's tracks
to see how it's done properly, so perhaps my working habits
are ridiculous. I like the results, though. :)

>
> doesn't work for me with a M-Audio Delta44 soundcard. When I run a
> 'test' I have : "Cannot do both mono and stereo!!!"

This may mean that your soundcard doesn't physically support both 1 and
2 channel playback (maybe it supports only 4 and more channels). You may
try use more high-level ALSA output plugin like "plughw" or "sw" (it's
better to consult about this in alsa-user maillist); in this case it
will perform software upmixing.

> Or when I am changing for 16bits or stereo, the message is : "Shit
> happens...bc2"

Ok, I'm planning to implement more comprehensive diagnostics soon :)

Hi, Nigel!

>
> Sorry Yury for the late reply. I do see that I have a mix of 1 channel, and 2
> channel .wav files.
>
> I don't want to compare one tracker to another, as that isn't fair, but I
> recently installed Leonard Ritter's Aldrin, and although I'm having problems
> finding out how to use it, when accessing my sound library, I can can click
> on a file, whether it's stereo, or mono, and it instantly plays it. If I want
> to use it as an insrument, I just double click on it.
>
> I have more than 17000 .wav files in my sounds library, and it would be nice
> to have something similar in Soundtracker, where I can click on a sample,
> irrespective of whether it's stereo or mono, and just hear the sound. Then if
> I want to use the sample, I could double click, and in the case of a mono
> sample it would be loaded as an instrument, and in the case of a stereo
> sample the box would be displayed asking how you want to handle the stereo
> sample.

I like your idea, too :) For mono samples everything is Ok in ST: the
sample is immediately loading by the single click, so you don't need a
preview. But this is not true for stereo samples, where a dialog is
appeared. So it's a good idea to make a kind of sample/instrument
preview, at least as an option. So I'll include this in TODO list for
Gtk-2 port of ST. Currently I don't have enough resources for adequate
maintaning Gtk-1 ST version (current stable), so why I'm planning this
only for Gtk-2 ST.

>
> Please don't get me wrong. Soundtracker is yours, not mine. I'm just trying to
> make things easier for myself, and these are just suggestions. If changes
> can't be made, I'll just work with it as it is.
>
> Disregarding my complaints, this is a nice tracker Yury.

Thanks :-)
> > select the file, which opens the box asking how you want to deal with it.
> > Then check the option I want, and then press the comma key.
>
> This is because you have stereo wav files, and ST don't know what do you
> want to do with them -- load one of the channels or mix both.
>
> > As a feature would it be possible to have another button in the file tab,
> > perhaps named "preview file", so that you could, with a single mouse
> > click listen to files, then when you have found one you like, you can
> > click on the "load file" button, and load it?
>
> For monophonic samples and instruments this is true. You should just
> select the file and after this you can listen to it. The only natural
> way to do what you want is I mean the stereo samples support in ST (this
> topic already have been discussing several times).
> As a feature would it be possible to have another button in the file tab,
> perhaps named "preview file", so that you could, with a single mouse click
> listen to files, then when you have found one you like, you can click on the
> "load file" button, and load it?

For monophonic samples and instruments this is true. You should just
select the file and after this you can listen to it. The only natural
way to do what you want is I mean the stereo samples support in ST (this
topic already have been discussing several times).

Best regards,
Yury.

I have version 0.6.7 on Fedora Core 2, installed as an rpm from planetccrma.
My sounds library has 1000's of .wav files, and have to listen to many before
choosing one to load.

At the moment I have to perform 3 actions to listen to a file. First, select
the file, which opens the box asking how you want to deal with it. Then check
the option I want, and then press the comma key.

As a feature would it be possible to have another button in the file tab,
perhaps named "preview file", so that you could, with a single mouse click
listen to files, then when you have found one you like, you can click on the
"load file" button, and load it?

I also installed version 0.6.8 on Fedora Core 5 from Fedora extras, thinking
that such a feature might now exist, but no joy.

Many thanks for Soundtracker.

Nigel.

New ST-Gtk2 snapshot: alsa-1.x driver

Hi everyone!

After some period of silence I'm proud :) to announce new ST-Gtk2 port
at http://metamorph0sis.nm.ru/ Its main feature is working Alsa-1.x
output driver. Sure, it's not complete, buggy and far from perfection,
but it allows to playback sounds using native Alsa-1.x support. It also
can determine and use the capabilities of the particular sound device
(for instance if your card can do 96 kHz, you can play modules with this
sampling rate).

A little instruction how to use this new driver: type the appropriate
sound device in the corresponding field (the default is hw:0,0, the
automatic determination of possible devices is planning) and press
"Test" button. If computer will not hang up, ST will not crash and no
error messages will not appear at the console from where you've run ST
(graphical error dialogs are still not implemented) the ratings will be
set to their maximum possible values. You may correct them if you don't
want to overdrive your CPU and enjoy! :-)

WBR,
Yuru.

P.S. 24 and 32 bit and multichannel (channels > 2) playback still not
supported, because ST mixer still cannot do these.

Maybe it's a jack problem. I never use jack + ST with success since more
1 year. Some users have this problem. The most simple is to use OSS only
or oss2jack
(http://www.linuxmao.org/tikiwiki/tiki-index.php?page=Jack&highlight=oss2jack#Oss2jack).
