Source code control

Howdy,

We are contemplating a fairly large site, large enough that all of the
developers working on it will not be in one location.
As a result, we are looking more seriously at source code control for the
site, and we are running into some issues.

We are contemplating using RCS or CVS for the site, but not everything in
the tree (product images, for example)
needs to be under source code control..How are such things handled when a
developer checks out the tree to work on the site-
is there some nifty build tool that understands how to deal with this, or
are the non-controlled directories simply stubbed out and
loaded from elsewhere?

Or maybe there's another way of arranging things to avoid the problem entirely?

Any guidance you can provide would be appreciated.
