Thanks for the notice and clean-up, Andrea. I have now blocked these
users. I hesitate to block everyone on the users list that looks like a
spammer before they actually post any spam, because I might mistakenly
include some legitimate users. Unfortunately, requiring confirmation for
account registrations is easier said than done because we can't send
e-mail from the SourceForge web server. For the moment I have disabled
account registration altogether, until we find a better solution. People
who want an account can contact me and I will add them.

I wonder whether it would be a good idea to switch to the
SourceForge-provided MediaWiki now
(http://apps.sourceforge.net/mediawiki/pipmak/) instead of trying to
maintain our own outdated installation. When it was introduced, I
originally decided against it for various reasons, but some of them have
been eliminated now, and a reconsideration may be in order. Some
upcoming changes to the Hosted Apps have just been announced (by e-mail
to project admins, it doesn't seem to be on the web anywhere) and I'll
have a closer look when they are implemented in 1-2 weeks. The advantage
would be that the burden of administration is taken off us (me). The
biggest disadvantage I see right now is that we would lose the
Pipmak-specific look.

I just took a look at the MediaWiki FAQ...
<http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:FAQ>
...and it sounds as if giving it a Pipmak look would be trivial, if you were
to switch to SourceForge's MediaWiki.  Unless there's some
SourceForge-specific detail I don't know about that would cause problems in
this area.

That page is very long. Can you point me at the specific section that
implied that?

Maybe I'm misunderstanding you, but yes, the non-customizability is
SourceForge-specific. They just don't give you access to the files. I
know how to customize a MediaWiki that I have full control over, that's
exactly what I've done for the existing Pipmak wiki.

I was looking at section 3: "Changing the interface".

Oh, I see.  Then what I read on MediaWiki's site does not apply.  Sorry.

Perhaps changing the look of the Pipmak just to give it a Pipmak look is not a
wise decision, as portability may be reduced in the process.  Now would
probably be good time to mention that the left navigation/tool bar on the
Pipmak wiki does not render properly for me: it is placed after the rest of
the content on the page, but still on the left side.

Yes, it's the same for me, And this is the same with Firefox and IE7 (but I
remeber that with IE6 render was correct)

I think that the loss of the customization of the sidebar is not something so
serious, we could change a little the main page of the Wiki, including the link
that now are on the left side. (but this is only my opinion).

Bye,

I have now tentatively migrated the main page over to <http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/pipmak/index.php?title=Main_Page
 > and my impression is that it doesn't look too bad. The SourceForge
bar at the top isn't as disturbing anymore as it was in earlier
revisions and the lack of Pipmak-specific appearance, primarily in the
sidebar, is unfortunate but no serious obstacle. Importing pages with
full history seems to work fine, and I can even (manually) filter out
spam revisions. The server seemed a bit slow at times, but I hope that
was a temporary condition. One big advantage, apart from the newer
version and centralized maintenance, is that this wiki can send e-
mail, e.g. for watched pages.

Before I can do the real full import, I now need to know the
SourceForge user names of all past contributors so that I can match
them up with the names stored in the dump. I will contact everyone
concerned separately.

Do not make any edits in the new wiki yet, they would be lost when I
move things over for real - I will announce the time of the cutover
later.

It does seem a tad slower, but way quicker than Nabble is, I do have a Sourceforge account, at some point I was intending a tut around my demo, I enjoy writing them.. I'm wrapped up Beta testing various apps at the moment along with things I SHOULD be doing lol

The side menu; people would expect that anyway with a wiki

Fingers crossed to move goes smoothly :)

Wiki migration upcoming

by Christian Walther :: Rate this Message:

With a few months of delay, I am now about to migrate wiki content
from <http://pipmak.sourceforge.net/wiki/> to <http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/pipmak/
 >. As soon as SourceForge staff processes my request to reset the new
wiki, I will set the old wiki to read-only and start exporting and
moving over stuff. Since I'm going to try to manually edit out spam,
that may take a few hours. I'll post here when the migration is
completed.

Wiki migration completed

by Christian Walther :: Rate this Message:

The Pipmak wiki is now moved to
<http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/pipmak/>. Migration went smoothly
(with one little exception: intermixed revisions of SourceForge
placeholder content in the history of the main page), and most of the
history is intact. Spam has been removed as planned.

In the meantime, I have found out that, if I understand correctly, not
every user logged in with their SourceForge account can automatically
edit pages, but I have to individually give them edit rights manually.
That's not quite what I had in mind, but I guess we can live with it
until SourceForge fixes that
(http://sourceforge.net/apps/ideatorrent/sourceforge/ideatorrent/idea/172/)
- it's no worse than the current state in the old wiki at any rate.
Could anyone of you help me verify this by trying to edit something
(e.g. in the sandbox)? I can't test it myself since I'm either logged
out and have no permissions at all, or logged in and have full admin
access to the wiki.

Next, I will try to write a redirector from URLs on the old wiki to the
corresponding pages on the new one, so that old links continue to work.

OK, redirection is done. It's pretty simplistic (essentially a one-liner
in PHP), if anyone runs into a case it doesn't handle properly, let me know.

The old wiki has been moved to <http://pipmak.sourceforge.net/wikiold/>
and will remain there for a while in case any difficulties arise with
the new one.
