Specific option for outlook 2007 - courier-pop3

Hello,

I'm trying to use courier (with both IMAP and POP). IMAP works fine
and POP too with thunderbird. My problem is that Outlook 2007
duplicates some mails!

I've done the next test: On a gentoo 2008 server, I have an account
with some unread mails. I open Outlook 2007 (configured with the POP
server and with the option "keep mails on server"). The result is that
some mails are downloaded twice (but not all). I close outlook and
then open Thunderbird (with similar configuration). I get then my mail
perfectly.

Of course I tried another POP server (gmail) with my outlook and this
time it works fine. I also tried on 3 PCs my outlook and I get the
same result.

I tried to access my POP server directly with telnet and it works fine.

How can I correct my server ?

The PCs I'm using are working on Vista and outlook is SP2.
The server is a Gentoo 2008 and courier-imap used is "4.0.6-r3".

Thanks for your help

Sebastien

Thanks for the clue but unfortunately with or without the option I
have the same result (with outlook I mean).

I'm continuing investigating by using tcpdump on POP3 but I did not
find multiple "RETR" when outlook gets multiple mails. Very strange ...

I am suing Outlook Express with Courier IMAP and it works perfectly. Why
don't you use Outlook Express?

Well, as I said I did tests with Thunderbird (with POP) and it works
perfectly. The problem is that my customers want to use outlook 2007
(not the "Express" version).

Moreover, even if the problem comes from outlook itself I don't
understand why it works fine with gmail (with the POP server). Can
this comes from Gentoo itself or another component ?
In my mind, because mails are not duplicated on the server, the
problem is somewhere in the system "POP - OUTLOOK". Is there a doc
where the mail fetching process is explained (the use of the
courierpop3dsizelist) aspecially concerning the identification of new
mails.

For info, I just did a new test with an older gentoo (wich runs
Courier IMAP / POP) and that times this works. The configuration is
the same than the other server except that the "bugged" one uses spam
assassin.

Anyway thanks, for your help :)

POP3 is explained in http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc1939. The
"optionality" of UIDL and TOP is also mentioned in the short rfc1957.

Outlook has always had this kind of problem, even with Exchange
servers. I'd suggest to either use IMAP or clear the option of
leaving old messages on the server. Yet another approach is
http://en.kioskea.net/telecharger/telecharger-2659-duplicates-remover-for-outlook
(presumably for servers that don't support IMAP.)

Thanks for the links. As far as I investigated the problem does not
come from the server and as you mentionned, Outlook seems to work not
on a standard way. Moreover, I did new tests and I cannot reproduce
the problem with the same outlook version on a Windows XP SP 3 ...

Concerning removing the "keep messages on the server" does not help :(

Does it download the same message twice _on the same session_?

Hello Alessandro,

I don't know how to see this. I did the next test: I dumped (with
tcpdump) the POP3 traffic and there is not duplicate RETR command with
the same id. I think that this means mails are not downloaded twice.
If there is another way to test this, please tell me how.

Thanks, sebastien

Hi All,

Where does one configure the following in the Courier Server?:

· Auto-forward facility (E.g say a local user has a yahoo account that he wishes to receive a copy of his local Mails)

· Maximum outgoing Mail size for Local users

Thanks

There are some possibilities... You can use .courier file in relevant home
directory to specify non-default delivery instructions for this mailbox (see
dot-courier man page) or you can use maildrop filtering recipe to do it
another way. In either case, be warned - in general mail forwarding without
changing sender address may cause problem (spf checking being first one
coming along).

I don't know whether it can be set per user, never tried that. There is
sizelimit configuration file in etc directory, but this is global setting.

Thanks for the .courier idea. I will try it.

But could you please be more specific about the size limit aspect? I have
checked etc directory and etc/courier directory but could not find any size
limit configuration

Define an alias. See the makealiases man page.

> · Maximum outgoing Mail size for Local users

There is no per-user maximum outgoing mail size. It is possible to set
individual maximum message sizes based on the sender's IP address. See
"sizelimit" in the courier(8) man page.

As a scripting language, maildrop allows to check the message size
and act accordingly. Checking spam rating before forwarding may also
be a good idea...

In etc/courier directory, there could be a file named sizelimit. If such file
is not present, default size limit (10000000 I think) comes into effect. So
you can just try create it with any method you are comfortable with and put
desired value into it. This is global value, affecting all mails coming
through your mail server. It seems you can do per sender IP size limiting,
maybe in smtpaccess config file/directory, setting SIZELIMIT environment
variable. Look at http://www.courier-mta.org/courier.html for some more
description.

If all your local users are in some, say private, address space, this method
be of use for you.

MAIL AUTO-FORWARD

Thanks.
I implemented the .courier and .forward and it works but not exactly the way
I want it. I have also checked maildropfilter and it does the same thing.
What I want to achieve is to keep a local copy and send a copy out, but what
these things do is to send a copy out without keeping a local copy.

If you use .courier forwarding, you need two lines - one tells
./Maildir/
meaning save local copy, and the other
&address-somewhere-else.com
meaning send a copy to another location.

Similar effect can be achieved with maildrop - line
cc address-somewhere-else.com
sends copy to that address and continues, so you will have a local copy as
well.

Again, please look at man pages/www docs for details.

Regards,
Milan
