No. Not that this rule only applies if you want to write code that is
portable across Smalltalk dialects. If you want your code to just run
on one dialect then it's fine to use it.

Hi, I'm getting the Delay class flagged as non-portable by Slime rules, but no explanation at http://www.seaside.st/community/conventions.

Delay uses Semaphore. Is there a standard alternative to Delay for Seaside?

Hey Philippe,

I tried to install it yesterday. Unfortunately the tests didn't work at all for me. I saw that the implementation depends on several other packages. Can you tell me in which order I would have to solve the dependencies? Which package needs to be installed when? And which Monticello file should be loaded in which sequence?

Yes, it still needs work. There is no strict equivalent because nobody
could ever figure out what "deployment mode" meant anyway. However,
when you have the development tools loaded, there is a configuration
called WADevelopmentConfiguration that enables the toolbar and sets
the exception handler to show walkbacks. This configuration is added
to the Application Defaults (which is added to all Applications) when
you load the dev tools, so you probably want to remove that. Or, if
you are *actually* deploying, don't load the development package. :)

We'll definitely make this process clearer before a final release and
updated documentation will, of course, help.

I wrote the code. It needs testing, you can expect it to be buggy ;-)

I was wondering if there is a current OpenID implementation for Seasiders. After torturing google about the topic I came across a conversation from February this year point to the Squeaksource project: http://www.squeaksource.com/openid.html

I saw that the latest version of the project is from 2007. So I would like to know if this is indeed "a" or "the" latest project about OpenID and is there anyone that worked with it lately and can share his experiences?

[ANN] JQuery-WidgetBox

JQuery Widget box is a library for Seaside 3.0 wrapping
some interesting jQuery scripts/components together
with examples and tests.

Maybe they can be used as a template how to wrap free
jquery components and help Seaside grow.

BTW: all the JQWidget subclasses have a class comment
pointing to the appropriate plugin website.

Maybe other can help to finish them and extend the widget
box with more widgets.

We can also split them up into own packages and
use Widget Box as a loader. At least each widget should
follow the rules of seaside together with an example
and test.

The use of

html jQuery this parent: '.model'

is a bit strange, because this only returns the *direct* parents that
have the class .model. You might easily end up with an empty result
set and simply nothing happens. It might not be a problem in your
case, but it would be more intention revealing if you used #closest:
instead of #parent:

The expression

html jQuery ajax html: [:r | r text: 'red' ]

does not return the requested value, but the AJAX object itself.
Furthermore AJAX calls are asynchronous, so they immediately return.

Something along the following lines should work:

(html jQuery this closest: '.model') cssAt: 'background-color' put: 'red'

If you want to go through a server round-trip you could integrate the
change into the AJAX call you do to serialize the value. What about
something along ...

html jQuery ajax
serialize: html jQuery this;
script: [ :script | script add: ((script jQuery: '.model')
cssAt: 'background-color' put: currentColor) ]

Just my luck... I was busy creating a wrapper for the following in-
place editor just last night: http://code.google.com/p/jquery-in-place-editor/
But it does not work yet, mainly because I'm not getting the callback
to work correctly. However, I would like to learn what goes wrong
since I'm also creating other wrappers for jQuery plugins (which I
will publish soon too).

This is where I'm stuck: I do not know how to map the POST arguments
from the request onto the parameters of the callback block.

Upon changing the text, this plugin will execute the following code:

url: settings.url,
type: "POST",
data: settings.update_value + ''='' + new_html + ''&'' +
settings.element_id + ''='' + original_element.attr("id") +

I provide 'settings.url' as the following string to the jQuery plugin:

but the 'aBlock' callback does not get the params.

Any pointers are highly appreciated!

Can anybody explain this strange behavior? Or does someone have another idea
how I can update an image with server push (without user input or site
reload)? I would be very very happy to get some new ideas! - It's an
important part of my master thesis..


In the first case (when you press the button) you are in the context
of a session, thus the application is also know. In the second case
the application is not know, presumably because you call the method
from some background thread.

Probably you could avoid the error by somehow faking a session so that
the URL could be generated the usual way. Alternatively you could
register the URL yourself with your application object by navigation
through the dispatcher to the application.

Thank you Lukas! I've spend the whole day with digging deeper into Seaside but unfortunately I couldn't find a solution yet. I was neither able to get a link into the current session context nor faking another session. I just don't know how to do it. I also tried your other idea to register the URL myself. But then I've no idea how I could get this work with Comet to update the image on my website. Maybe - if you've some time - you could give me some more help with this...

The use of

html jQuery this parent: '.model'

is a bit strange, because this only returns the *direct* parents that
have the class .model. You might easily end up with an empty result
set and simply nothing happens. It might not be a problem in your
case, but it would be more intention revealing if you used #closest:
instead of #parent:

The expression

html jQuery ajax html: [:r | r text: 'red' ]

does not return the requested value, but the AJAX object itself.
Furthermore AJAX calls are asynchronous, so they immediately return.

Something along the following lines should work:

(html jQuery this closest: '.model') cssAt: 'background-color' put: 'red'

If you want to go through a server round-trip you could integrate the
change into the AJAX call you do to serialize the value. What about
something along ...

html jQuery ajax
serialize: html jQuery this;
script: [ :script | script add: ((script jQuery: '.model')
cssAt: 'background-color' put: currentColor) ]

Don't see one... you'd have to change WADispatcherViewer or its superclass to return an appropriate response.

A 404 is returned in 3.0.

Update an image with AJAX/Comet (server push)

Hallo,

I'm developing a web application in that i need to update an image element very often but neither periodically nor on user input. The image gets computed on the server as a Form-object. I'm trying to realize this with Comet:

    TestApp>>renderContentOn: html

            onClick: (html request callback: [ self update ]);
        with: 'update'.
    html script: (html comet
            pusher: self pusher;
          connect)

            update: [ :html | html image form: (self getDisplayForm) ] ].

The method 'getDisplayForm' computes a new Form-object on the fly.

When I click the Button 'update' it works as expected (the form gets computed and the image on my website updates immediately). But when I perform the 'update' method from outside this class (every time when a new image is available that is computed somewhere else), I get this error:

    UndefinedObject>>doesNotUnderstand: #application
    WARenderingContext>>registry
        ^ WACurrentSession value application
    WARenderingContext>>urlForDocument:mimeType:fileName:
    ...

Afaik the problem is the missing WACurrentSession and because of that it's not possible to compute a temporary URL for the image.

But I don't understand, why one time my 'update' method works (after the button click) and one time not (when I perform the 'update' method directly).

Can anybody explain this strange behavior? Or does someone have another idea how I can update an image with server push (without user input or site reload)? I would be very very happy to get some new ideas! - It's an important part of my master thesis..

right in the last line. Because the url that was written on the configuration is basically a ByteString (which does not implement #addToPath:)

I guess this must be a bug in Seaside 3.0

In development, serve files statically from the file system with Komanche, instead of WAFileLibrary I guess.

Do you have a code snippet to make Kom serve files from a certain path without disrupting Seaside?

That's an uncool pattern. I know the tests use it everywhere but you
shouldn't use it. It's better to implement #selectorsToInclude in
MyFileLibrary and answer #(styleCss). The best way is probably to use
#resourceUrl: 'css/style.css'
