Another way would be to save a playfield with "parts bin" flag on
into a .morph file. To do so:

- Go to the World's white menu handle and choose 'preferences'.
- (The layout of it is messed up but) for the "type here, hit
search" part, type "debughalo" and hit enter.
- It'll show one entry "debugHaloHandle". Click on the check box.
- Grab a regular playfield from the treasure box.
- Put your map objects into that playfield.
- From the playfields white handle menu, choose "playfield
options..." and then check 'parts bin' option.
- Get the halo for the playfield again and from the gray debug
handle, choose "save morph in file". provide a name and it'll
create a .morph file in the etoys directory.
- Quit the Etoys session. And copy the .morph file to students
computers. The above needs to be done only once by the teacher.
- Students start Etoys. Drag the .morph file onto the running Etoys
window and choose "load as morph".

Hope this helps for anyone encountering the same problem.

There also is a simpler way (I just didn't remember): In the "Connectors" category is a "Button Flap" that you can simply drag out to create a flap. If you then drop Sketches into it, they become buttons that create copies.

Rita,

Tutorials and documentation are a must. You have spotted them correctly. Sample scripts may be added.

An alternative is to keep the site as is (in a subfolder, or in a subdomain) but trap it into a frame so that a link to current site would be always available however the user gets into the old site.

There was this seminar at the Inter American Development Bank in Washington DC on September 15. I had the pleasure and honor to meet in person Ing. Miguel Brechner, someone I have a lot of professional respect for, as he is the person responsible for the logistics behind connectivity, delivery and many other roles for the 350.000 XOs of Plan Ceibal, in Uruguay.

I tend to consider Miguel a friend, though I have often given him a hard time due to the nosy questions I often raise. In a Uruguayan egalitarian way I "tuteo" him, and even dare send him emails that he does answer, though I try to keep them brief and far apart for I understand he is a busy man with many responsibilities.

His is a very hard role as politics force Ceibal to focus almost exclusively on the bright, smiley faces, rather than mentioning avoidable or unavoidable mistakes, issues that people like me tend to want to understand, and bring to light, so as to avoid making them again elsewhere.

So, Miguel and I had a bit of a conversation there at the IADB. He knows how I push for a bigger role and empowering of Uruguayan teachers and volunteers as the best option for Ceibal. So far he has relied for decision-making on paid, hierarchical staff, and even though volunteer events end up being standing-room-only in the biggest conference rooms of Montevideo, and volunteer work keeps many things actually moving, they seem a little more than consumables, instead of the cornerstone for operations, integral to the decision-making and plans and procedures. As the last word in our IADB conversation, Miguel presented his need to do his deliverables on time, and how he cannot give volunteers more of a role, a quote for the title of this note.

On Volunteers

Yes, many volunteers are flaky, mercurial, not predictable, many get bored quickly, "a herd of cats" when it comes to planning and deliverables. I've been burned often by these unreliable behaviors, but maybe not nearly as often as by the reliable mediocrity of bureaucracies. There is solid evidence as collected and described by Eric Raymond (of The Cathedral and the Bazaar fame) that volunteer work actually ends up being better in quality and quantity. And it's not just because when there are many eyes all bugs are shallow (meaning that when a lot - the mostest the bestest - a big huge lot of people look at a problem, problems are found faster than by regimented groups of highly trained engineers).

There is also actually a lot to be said for the fringe benefits of empowering people, not just catching bugs. I mean, is a project like OLPC, like CEIBAL, all about delivering machines and getting kids to assume the joy of the Internet? Or is there an intent to actually change the world? Then let's start with those who already have bought in, the volunteers. Let's empower them, and use that as our calling card on how good our empowering works.

"It's an Education Project", about empowering people, helping them get moving to achieve their very best. But, oh, how fast do we put hurdles on "our" plan, to block off people whose sin is to do things differently. Nuisance, yes Sir, a silly nuisance they be! So yes, we are still happy to empower those who will behave, the rest pray stand aside. Those who don't gather, "my" way, they scatter... I am not saying Miguel is guilty of this, but certainly more could be done under his leadership to get teachers to connect - at a price, the price of seeing some disagreements, some loss of artificial appearance of uniformity, but then the harvest would be great.

Y'all know a few people that fit the shoe, no need to name names, but your usual liberal contructi* will tell anyone that their goal is to awaken initiative and a critical mindset, but they get so upset when it does happen and they get criticized... In an interesting paradox they really, really seem to dislike people with opinions and prying questions, maybe because that seems in their eyes to threaten their way to, uh, help awaken independent, critical thinking ?!?!

How to Work With Volunteers

Among the many weird things that God put on my way that I had no idea would ever be useful, was being professionally trained on working with volunteers. I must not have been a good student, for people I manage can often tell that I tend to expect immediate results, and for a while my CV indicated that I have low tolerance for mediocrity. As time passes, besides getting softer, I guess as a by-product of being married, I have had the chance to learn from the masters, and in one sentence I dare say,

"to achieve results with volunteers, you have to expect the best, and plan for the worst"

The worst often being long nights to complete and cleanup what didn't get finished (hi, Adam!). Otherwise, when you have patience, and time, and did your best to help people feel they can reach the stars, they simply will amaze you by what they can accomplish. In the USA many institutions like hospitals, libraries, the YMCA, and many others would simply die off if they could not work with volunteers. The "Volunteer Coordinator" there is a respected, well paid and trained professional that has deliverables to present, just like any engineer or sales person. I have already written on how important it were that OLPC empowered that position.

It is often told that a volunteer is the one who was too slow when the rest of the battalion took a quick step back at hearing the call, but that will not do.

The true volunteer actually takes the step forward, out of the standard mediocre herd. Of course it means that by the very nature of the beast, volunteers tend to be different, to have initiative. They tend to be opinionated. Not as easily appeased as the gullible sheep we know as normal populace. They ask questions, and they expect honest answers. And sometimes they quit unexpectedly or simply are late.

There seems to be significant evidence that enterprise and growth, both in production, wealth and knowledge, happens better where ideas are freely exchanged - look at ye olde US of A, already pointing that way before being born, by the example of Franklin and friends.

Thus a valid point for those who see brighter future for poor places is in adopting the ways of the initiative. The more the weirder it is that within OLPC and its brood there seem to be little concern for actually making this happen, to walk the talk. "teach initiative, but for crying out loud, don't try it yourself". (full disclosure: initiative is happening, it's even celebrated when it fits the manager's interests, but seldom encouraged with funding or attention or recognition - much less with a place at the decision making table)

Interesting paradoxes happen, especially on the way to socialism, where the initial concept calls for the people to have more of a voice, but we end up with rigid top-down five-year plans.

And anyway, it is very hard for teachers to even try if not encouraged, anywhere. You see, the teacher is the guy/doll who knows. Now, if s/he asks a question, or worse, makes a mistake, then s/he is proving ignorance, thus, how come s/he is getting paid for teaching? It takes a lot of balls or the suitable equivalent to dare stick up one's head up, a courageous nail where the hammers rule. When I was a teacher in Uruguay I knew my career was basically over and I would have no chance of a promotion because I was the kind of guy who asked principals to heed the ANEP rule that forbade smoking - worse since one of them was precisely among those spewing fumes in the halls and classrooms. I was 6th in a "concurso de oposición" among 1.800 in Montevideo (and thus tenured), a city where pretty much nobody knew my fame of "difficult", but 180 among 230 in my hometown of Minas...

How to Do the Volunteer Thing

My recipe for moving forward to encouraging initiative and critical thinking is precisely that: go ahead, c'mon, encourage initiative and critical thinking, at all levels, not just teach about it. Be consistent, walk the talk. Risk ruining that incredible thin budget by making sure people do participate, do ask questions, do, oh my, criticize. Open up!

Have your staff answer questions with something more substantial than the platitudes of telling people that questions are important (if you saw the emails!). Admit mistakes, not just say you made the book on them and that everyone knows, but by sharing that most valuable of all books so we be creative with our mistakes, not just repeat yours. People will be empowered now to maybe even try that same thing of honest openness with their own students, and those, as they grow up, truly transform society.

And then, my friend, we will all be able to say "we did it".

We all already admire the infrastructure, the sheer amazing thing of having 350 K XOs in the hands of kids,but that was not the goal, that was merely an objective. The goal is to have those kids, and of course their teachers, to be/come that "revolución" el Presidente spoke about. It will take too long if we don't scale up, and the only way to scale up that is affordable and effective is by empowering people to do it.

And they will amaze us all. They will change the world.

Yes, it can serve as a reference for the look, I think. I hope to find
some time soon to start writing, and then we can discuss the style. Of
course, anyone else can start writing also :)

We start writing in English, but we can manage translations later. The manual will not be publicly available while we are writing. To get an idea how it could look like, here is the TurtleArt documentation:

I particularly appreciate your spanish comments for the Nicaragua and Mi Istoria Waveplace stories. I haven't yet announce that the storybooks are on the showcase, and it's very nice that the children will have their native language to read.

Let's write the Etoys reference manual!

Hello everyone,

we do have a place now to write an Etoys reference manual:

Using FLOSS Manuals, everyone can just click on the above link and
start writing using your web browser. You have to register on their
page and then you can login. What we have by now is just an outline,
we can change it if we find out later that we need more or other
chapters. But for now let's start with
Introduction
Getting Started
User Interface
Objects
Tiles

We can probably write the introduction when everything else is done.
Getting started should cover technical details on how to start Etoys,
this is a reference manual, no teaching guide. For the other chapters,
everyone who wants to help just pick an object, tile or item of the
user interface, describe what it is and what it is for and add a
picture.
Writing with FLOSS manuals means, everyone else can read what you have
written and can change it. So don't hesitate to start writing, even if
you are not really sure about something, someone else will come and
change what's wrong :)
We start writing in English, but we can manage translations later. The
manual will not be publicly available while we are writing. To get an
idea how it could look like, here is the TurtleArt documentation:

The main reasons to use FLOSS manuals are that it is used by OLPC and
Sugar and we can reach that community and we can get help from the
activists from the other projects in translating or proofreading.

Also, we can get a .pdf at the end, not just text on a website. If you

ranking more quickly

Here's a tip . . .

You can rank more quickly if you click repeatedly on an arrow, counting the clicks. In other words, don't wait for the page to reload.

Sometimes this doesn't work, but I find that most times it does. If you get an error, simply click "Back" and "Reload".

The fix is coming in the next week or two.

These are great goals. We're also hoping to encourage many adults (teachers, etc) to post projects, which speaks to #3.

One additional idea would be to allow people to have their own "page" like it is done at Scratch (ex: http://scratch.mit.edu/users/sanda427 )
where in one spot you can see all of a person's projects (preferably ordered by date, so one could look and see how they have improved and perhaps what they learned) along with a list of friends (to encourage a sense of community) and Galleries.

1. Release notes

The release notes for the new Etoys version have to be written. There

Our task as the education team would be to tell the users what has
changed in the new version, but in a way they can understand it. This
is what Kim wrote for the last Etoys version:

Rita will go through the list and write up a first version.

2. Showcase

The second part of the meeting was devoted to discussions about the
showcase.

Randy suggested to have an explanation on the top of the screen about
how to vote and to have a submit-button on the page. Tim pointed out
that this is related Issue SQ-472 in the tracker.

Cherry asked, if there will be a button to enable or disable ranking.

We then had a longer discussion about if we want to rank projects or
not. Kathleen and Avigail are strongly against ranking (mostly because
they don't want to discourage children, and it is very difficult to
rank a project from a child and a project from an expert because these
cannot be compared to eachother), Randy, Cherry, Bert and Tim are in
favour of it (feedback will help children to learn more, ranking will
help users to find good projects easily). Rita would like to not
haveevery project ranked.

Tim pointed out four points without consensus yet:

1) whether the "featured" and "everyone" sections should have
different names, different looks, different rules, and different
navigation

2) whether "everyone" projects should be ranked at all

Kathleen wrote an email where she explained the reasons why ranking
projects could be dangerous. Rita pointed out that submitters should
decide if they want their projects ranked to lessen the burden of the
rankers.

3) whether moderation (hiding a project due to inappropriate content)
should be separate from ranking (giving points to projects to allow
sorting)

Tim asked, if just moderating really could be faster then ranking.

4) whether to show account levels with colored dots, and if so, how to
calculate them

We didn't get to this point in the meeting.

Regarding #1:

Randy suggested to follow Kim's idea of having the best projects with
proper guidance and explanation in the featured section.

The teams agrees on that.

There is no consensus yet about the other projects. Should they be
ranked, and how? There was a lot of discussion.

Tim explained that there will be groups, where all members of the
group could put projects without any ranking (good for use in
classrooms).

We discussed about approving/unapproving projects some more. A
suggestion was to rank with negative numbers could mean rejection.
Bert strongly recommended not to mingle moderation and ranking, which
would happen because these negative numbers would be used when
calculating the rank. Tim agreed to put a veto-button in the ballots,
which is used to reject projects, so that no other person has to look
at that project.

We agreed on this process:

• when a project is uploaded, ballots are being send
• in the ballots you find a veto-button to reject projects with
inappropriate content (we will write down what is considered
inappropriate).
• The person, who rejects a project, has to write a comment why it
has been rejected.
• The project will be send back to the submitter, who will read the
comment and a nice email that he/she please should change the project
and upload it again
• if the project is uploaded again, a new ballot for this project
will be generated, so that not necessarily the same person will look
at that project (but of course that can happen)
To make ranking easier, Randy will write up a list of labels which can
be used instead of just numbers.

This last point is crucial and needs a bit more detail. Tim wanted to
unify grading with moderation, so points were given from -10 to 10,
and an overall negative score means the project gets rejected. The
group said that rejection should be either-or, so another idea thrown
into the mix was to rate from -1 to 10, where -1 would mean reject,
and the non-negatives a rating. But even assigning points merely on a
0 to 10 scale was deemed difficult (5 should mean "average"). So Randy
brought up the idea to do away with the numbers and rather have
"rubrics", that is textual labels to choose from. And not surprisingly
he was tasked with creating the list

Three points further points that were made . . .

1) if we don't rank projects at all in "everyone", how will users find
good projects when there are thousands of projects in "everyone". Both
Cherry and Randy made points in favor of ranking within everyone ...
Cherry, "I don't want to have to click on each of the 100 "geometry"
projects to find one I like. Randy, "It'll make it easier for the ed
team to pick projects to feature."

2) if we allow users to choose not to be ranked, what rank will we
give them? Without a rank, they have a rank of zero unless we choose
something else. In a list of 1000 projects, 900 of which are ranked
and 100 that are not, where do the 100 get put? If the bottom, is this
fair to the 100? If somewhere else, is this fair to the 900?

3) ranking is invisible to the project author. Yes, ranks control
where in the various lists a project will appear (overall rank,
subject rank, target age rank, region rank, tag rank). But these will
be completely different. There is no obvious score apparent to any
child or adult. Tim believes people are missing this point as they
object to ranking, either in part or in whole.
