SquirrelMail Alternatives? Suggestions, Please

I am interested know what alternatives to SquirrelMail people are
using, why, whether it was a good choice and how difficult it is to
use a non-default email system on OS X 10.5/6 server.

Thanks,
Reuven Steinberg

Before I gave up on hosting our own email and moved everything over to
Google Apps for Education, we used RoundCube (http://roundcube.net/)
quite successfully. Before that, we used the built-in SquirrelMail but
with a plugin to show quota usage.  MOXS 10.5.7 broke that arrangement
and forced the complete migration to RoundCube, which I had been
testing for a while.

RoundCube is really easy to setup. For a guide (but you probably won't
need it if you are familiar with MySQL and Apache), see this link:

http://www.roundcubeforum.net/general-discussion/3673-guide-installing-roundcube-mac-os-x-leopard-server.html

I'm not going to vouch for its correctness or currentness as I didn't
use it. But it's something.

If you are willing to consider a commercial alternative, Kerio is a
pretty good choice. How many clients do you need to support?

Thumbs up for Phils suggestion, KERIO is a great mail & collaboration server, supports exchange protocol and runs on Mac OS X, easy to maintain. inexpensive too!

Kerio is terrific. It just works, and without much maintenance. It doesn't yet work with Snow Leopard though.

I am also a huge fan of Kerio Mail Server... but was the OP asking for an alternative mail server or simply an alternative webmail interface? Either way, both have been mentioned (Roundcube, Kerio).

Oh, and let's not turn this into another Kerio vs Zimbra vs Communigate vs Groupwise vs pony express.....

I wanted to second Phil's suggestion of Kerio.  I have recently purchased Kerio Mail Server for my company.  It is easy to set up, use, and maintain.  It plays well with outlook and apple mail.  I have been told that it works great with Entourage as well, but do not use that in-house.  I would definitely suggest it as well.

Thanks,
Tracy

I'll partly second RoundCube - was easy to install and had nice Ajax features, so looked a lot nicer  to the average user, which is important if you are providing services - but, when I last used it there were some questions over it's security.  It also lacked a lot of features that you can implement into SquirrelMail.

Kerio is great - I would fully recommend it if you want Exchange-like functionality, but it's not just a replacement for Squirrelmail as it includes an smtp, imap, pop etc. server - if you are open minded about replacing everything, then look at Kerio, it's great.

I have noticed that a lot of service providers use Horde (www.horde.org), but as I understand you have to set up their framework on the server, which could take a while, but as an alternative it works well and has some nice features with a nice GUI.  Remember that 10.5 runs Cyrus and 10.6 runs Dovecot, so take that into consideration when looking that any requirements...

Hope this helps.

SquirrelMail is nothing magic. It's a IMAP client with a web GUI that
talks to a IMAP server. That said you could install any other IMAP
client just the same way you might choose Eudora, Outlook, or
Thunderbird over Mail.app

This said, SquirrelMail is a very, very popular FOSS.

Zimbra Mail Server. With it's iSync plugin it syncs user's calendars and contacts in the background without any issues. It's a great IMAP server in addition to a full fledged SMTP server and emulates Microsoft's MAPI and ActiveSync protocols so you can use Snow Leopard and your iPhone as if you had a Microsoft Exchange Server.

And best of all, it's open source, and free if you don't need the enterprise features like ActiveSync and iSync.

No, you can't use Snow's Exchange support with it unless it supports
Exchange Web Services. Snow doesn't use MAPI, or DAV for that matter, which
is why you can only use Snow on Exchange 2007 or later. If it supported
MAPI, you could use Snow with Ex2003 or earlier
