Squirrelmail 1.4.13 on Ubuntu 8.04 suddenly failing

I have had Squirrelmail running successfully on my server for a number of
years, but suddenly today my users are getting "ERROR: Could not complete request.
Query: LSUB "" "*"
Reason Given: Permission denied" when they attempt to logon.
and on the left of the screen "ERROR: Could not complete request.
Query: CREATE "INBOX.Sent"
Reason Given: Permission denied".
Please tell me what went wrong and how I fix it.

Ask your IMAP server.  The error comes from it.
