Starting grok-doc mailling list a solution or a problem?

Hi all!

With regards to the discussed grok community doc effort. If we start a
separate [grok-doc] mailing list, will you subscribe and contribute to
it?

The purpose of a separate [grok-doc] mailing list is:
1) signal that we take documentation seriously
2) reduce the competition between dev-related threads and doc-related
threads on [grok-dev]
3) making it more obvious what level of activity we have in the docs
department
4) making it less intimidating to post on the [grok-doc] rather than
the main [grok-dev] list

Mvh Sebastian

Yes. Personally, I feel I could help and contribute more to a grok-doc
than a grok-dev right now.

I'll subscribe to it, one more mailing-list with a filter in my gmail
account. ;-)
If I can answer to some questions, I'll do.

IMHO, if some people feel it's intimidating to post on the grok-dev
list about grok documentation, then I think we, as a comunity, have an
issue to solve in this main grok list. Grok is not even at 1.0 yet
(though we're close). I believe it's too early to separate
documentation concerns from development concerns, specially since we
can gather valuable feedback about what to develop when we discover
something that is too difficult or confusing to document.

Incidentally, I believe the same thing about an eventual grok-users
list. We still need the basic user feedback in shaping Grok.

I don't think we have so much traffic on this list as to warrant the
separation, and if people feel less inclined to post about
documentation on this list than on a separate list, then we need to
change their perception about this list.

Cheers, Leo

Hello all,

please do not create a new mailing list. If the documentation problem
is out of the way, developers, especially Zope developers, tend to
forget it. ;-)

I can understand the hesitation to post either doc-related stuff here
or newbie questions. I am socialized in a net where you do not post
newbie questions to a -dev list, so personally I am not easy with
posting my questions here.

But the website is very clear about that:

"""
This is the mailing list for the users of Grok, and the developers of
Grok. The developers would like to know how you are using Grok, and
any problems and suggestions you may have, so don't be shy!
"""

In this sense I would keep one list for the moment.

Thanks Leonardo for expressing this so well, I share your views on this.

If keeping things on this mailing lists suppresses the enthusiasm
though, I will create a new list...

Martijn

We really, really, really want a separate list :) And we will post
regular updates on [grok-dev]. I am not too worried about the [grok-
doc] list coming before [grok-user]. We have a clear vision of the
whats and whys and we will be active on this list. By directing
feedback from newbies to [grok-doc] we can hopefully catch the
knowledge in organised docs rather than hanging around in loose
threads. I think it will benefit a greater audience, including those
who aren't accustomed to being active on mailing lists.

So, I humbly and formally ask for a [grok-doc@...] mailing list
to be set up for me, tim and steve to manage*.

Mvh Sebastian

* and no... it's not just to have our-own-pet-list(tm) for the sake of
it, I promise! We really believe this is the right way to go :)
