Starting sync engine

Hi all,
Can anyone help me please?
I have installed the synce trayicon and multisync-gui on my karmic koala (9.10) and when I try sync I get this error... (I already had a partnership)
"Failed to retrieve partnership information: Failed to execute program /usr/bin/sync-engine: Success"

I installed using the ubuntu software centre under applications

I have been able to establish a sync relationship by using terminal and giving the command "sudo synce-sync-engine"
This enable the sync engine to start and I can actually synchronise.
However the moment i close the terminal the engine shuts down and I can no longer sync until I reopen the terminal and follow the above command.
Is there a way to get the engine to begin the moment I plug in the PDA / touch phone or do I have to keep doing the terminal thing over and over?
It works but was not necessary under jaunty or Intrepid
Any help would be appreciated
thankyou

Might be a dbus problem. Haven't had a chance to test on karmic yet.
What versions of the synce stuff are you using ?

No no no, always run sync-engine as your user, not as root.

It should start on demand by dbus activation, if it doesn't we may have
to do some searching.

It should be started automatically via dbus. Have you rebooted after
installation of sync-engine / before testing?
Check what gets added to the log files when you plug in your device,
system log is /var/log/messages and synce log should be in .synce/ in
your home directory.
(Command to view log:
sudo less /var/log/messages
sudo less ~/.synce/sync-engine.log
press end to see the last entries)

Ah, you're using the packages in the ubuntu archive itself. I would
strongly recommend adding the synce ppa to your package sources and
upgrading, I honestly don't know how the main archive packages are set
up.

If you would rather stick with the older ones, see if there is a file
called

/usr/share/dbus-1/services/org.synce.SyncEngine.service
