Status of h264

Hi,

I have not paid attention to this list in quite some time, so I apologize in advance if this has been asked already. Last I checked, the h264 was implemented, but it was in a seperate branch. I was wondering if it was ever merged? I am more concerned with the RTMPClient playback, as opposed to server streaming.

Thanks.

Red5 can playback prerecorded h264 videos as it doesn't need to
understand h264 but only its container the mp4 format. So yes red5
supports VOD h264 out of the box.

For live h264, well, you have to accept some drawbacks.

I just posted my feedback on streaming h264 to red5. I am still
investigating on finding better settings.

I haven't visited this group for months

nice to hear that red5 supports h264 both for vod and live streaming

then why don't the red5 team merge the separate h264 branch with the red5 standalone project?

It's not a separate branch, it works out-of-the-box.

You don't need to do anything special or tricky to make it work.

Thank yoy Thomas,

yesterday, I tried to run an mp4 file on my localhost, I am sure about my player

I think my mp4 encoding is not appropriate, what kind of encoder do you use for mp4?

I simply use MainConcept's encoder that ships with Sony Vegas.

Do you use mp4box or qt-faststart to make the videos streamable? I
don't know if Red5 requires that, I asked the question but nobody
answered, and I don't have time to do testing.

Live streaming seems to be pretty flaky.  For me, the same live (h264/aac) stream being published to FMS that plays back fine does not play back with Red5.

I'm hoping to get this figured out.

Which encoder being used in red5, in fms, used to encode the video file/live stream?  No idea.  I'm using the recent trunk build of Red5 (speaking of which, I'm going to try the release version) and FMS development version.

to my knowledge, red5 won't handle AAC (could be wrong)....MP3 works well...try h264/mp3 instead of h264/aac.

Yeah, that's my experience too (for live streams).  Although, it seems a bit flaky for live streams in general.  Using mp3 is not an option.  Our client does not want to go from aac to mp3.
