Two of the fonts I use, Linux Libertine and Fontin, come with small
capitals variants. Unlike bold and italic, or DejaVu's condensed, these
are treated as separate fonts. I wanted them to be treated correctly as
variants, so I altered the font info:
Family: Linux Libertine Capitals > Linux Libertine
Style: Regular > SmallCaps
OpenOffice, and other programs, then stoped treating the font as
separate (it no longer showed up in the font menus) but OO does not list
the new variant alongside italic and bold. Can anyone explain what's
going on here?

Those names probably need to go in the "Preferred Family" and
"Preferred Subfamily" name fields, but don't be surprised if your
software is extremely broken in handling of font names.

Meanwhile, OO may be using the OS/2 fields to distinguish weight and
width.
