Successful SAFS implementations

My company is currently evaluating whether to (as well as how to) implement keyword automation.  This also includes whether we would implement the SAFS keyword framework.  We currently have multiple applications automated with RFT and Rational Robot but are also considering using QTP.

Could you please point me to where I could find information about companies that have successfully implemented the SAFS framework?  I'm looking for information such as the following:

1.  How long did it take to implement?
2.  What was the success rate?
3.  How much customization was required?
4.  Were outside consultants needed for implementation?
5.  How much training was required for Automaters?  Test Designers?
6.  Were you able to successfully use keyword automation with a test management system?

Any help you can provide on where I can find this type of information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Jeff

Jeffrey,

Hopefully, other folks from other companies might chime in and give their own stats.  The problem is, there often isn’t any one “right” answer from even any one company.

Even at SAS, we have individual people or departments that can indicate both success and failure in using the SAFS framework.  It always boils down to the same issues representing success or failure using ANY automation tool or framework:

  a) Do we have realistic expectations and goals for what we need to accomplish?

  b) Are we allotting appropriate time and resources?

Failure most certainly comes when either of these is “No”.

One advantage you have is that SAFS works well with both Robot and RFT and you have expertise with these tools.  So you can continue to use your existing assets while expanding upon them with SAFS keyword-driven automation.  You can even inter-mingle SAFS  tests with existing Robot and RFT scripts.  When using SAFS with RFT  you can also use Image-Based Testing to handle technologies or scenarios that RFT cannot handle.

Also note, past success or failure of using SAFS with tools like RFT are going to be tied to the maturity of the tools.  RFT had huge problems throughout its V7 days that made it difficult or nearly impossible to integrate easily with SAFS.  Now, in 2009 with RFT V8 we have been able to make the SAFS RFT integration much smoother and the technology support and maturity with RFT and SAFS is much greater.

Carl
