Successfully build of KDE-3.5.7 on sparcv9 Solaris10

Hi,

I have successfully build the KDE 3.5.7 for sparcv9 (64-bit ultrasparc)
Sun-Solaris10 Version. If anybody is interested for it :) : I have a tar-file!

The installation was done in '/usr/local/sparcv9' and includes all needed libs
and tools. KDE itself was compiled with gcc-4.2.0 which is also part of the
tar-file.

I can provide the "349Mbyte tar.bz2 file" + "dt-session configuration package"
but I need a Server-Storage where I can upload the file (I have no server for
such a network load and storage capacity :( !).

I have testet successfully the KDE 3.5.7 Release on SunRay-Terminals and it
looks good :) !

Michael

Hallo Michael,

das sind ja tolle Nachrichten! :)

  Heiko

there seems to be a permission problem here:

ftp> ls -las
200 PORT command successful. Consider using PASV.
150 Here comes the directory listing.
drwxr-sr-x    2 0        1             512 Jun 15 06:22 .
drwxr-sr-x    3 0        1             512 Jun 13 12:33 ..
-rw-r--r--    1 0        1          115200 Jun 13 12:19 DtKDE357-Solaris-local
-rw-r--r--    1 0        1             394 Jun 15 06:22 README
-rw-rw----    1 60001    12003    369529509 Jun 14 12:42
usr_local_sparcv9-kde357.tar.bz2
226 Directory send OK.

because when I do a "get" on the bz2 file, I get

ftp> get usr_local_sparcv9-kde357.tar.bz2
200 PORT command successful. Consider using PASV.
550 Failed to open file.

keep up the good work!!

Or atleast can i look at the sources which made the successful build on
SPARC?

Would love to KDE on my SXDE box !

Hi,

following some correction you should make to solve some bugs in this distribution:

 - I determined a problem with konsole and yakuake where the windows size
was not detectable. If you called stty -a then no columns and lines could
be detected (especial at resize). This results in crazy display for vi or
   windowless-emacs.

Solution (It's crazy, dont ask me how I detect this :; ):

      - I have build the actual libz in the distribution and this lib is the
reason for the konsole and yakuake problems. I dont no why ! To solve
this: simple remove (with backup) /usr/local/sparcv9/lib/libz.so* or
        link /usr/lib/64/libz.so.1 to /usr/local/sparcv9/lib/libz.so.1.2.3

      - Restart kde-desktop.

 - If you want https-support or running-ssl in the distribution then you should
   set the OpenSSL-Lib-Path by:

   "Control Center/Security & Privacy/Crypto" -> OpenSSL:
"Path to OpenSSL shared libraries" shall be /usr/sfw/lib/64

 - If you want a running timezone setting then you should set the TZ environment
variable. I did this in front of /usr/local/sparcv9/kde-3.5.7/bin/startkde:

        export TZ=${TZ:-'Europe/Berlin'}
        [ "${TZ}" = 'MET' ] && export TZ='Europe/Berlin'

Solaris sets the timezone variable TZ from the /etc/default/init file but
KDE does not understand it thats why you need a transformation!

 - Some 64bit applications don't know about LD_LIBRARY_PATH_64 which will be set
by this distribution. If you have trouble with that then you could make
following changes in front of /usr/local/sparcv9/kde-3.5.7/bin/startkde:

        unset LD_LIBRARY_PATH
        unset LD_LIBRARY_PATH_64

With this changes kde-3.5.7 looks verry good on solaris :) !

Have fun,
Michael

PS: It would be nice to know who is using this distributions and which problems
or whishes the user have. I also search a dt-login-screen guru which could
improve the kde startup screen!

Dear all,

let me briefly summarize my experiences with Michaels KDE:
 + It's very nice! :)
I didn't encounter significant crashes so far. Almost everything
   behaves as expected.
+ I only have some minor issues to report:
   - The key combination Ctrl-Z in a shell (e.g. in xterm or konsole) which
suspends a foreground job doesn't work.
   - kpilotDaemon crashes after each HotSync and thus needs to be
     restarted manually.
   - kcalc is missing.
   - The audio players from kdemultimedia (noatun, juk) don't really
work. They only produce noise on the speakers, but don't play MP3's.
   - Some of my colleagues reported strange behavior of kopete. They
told me that they don't see sent and incoming ICQ messages in the chat
window. However, I was unable to reproduce this.
+ Since 1.5 weeks, my colleagues and I exclusively use Michaels KDE. It
runs stable on my very own desktop machine (Blade 1000) as well as in
   our SunRay environment.
+ I'm regularly using kmail, kate, korganizer, kgpg, kpilot, konsole,
konqueror, kopete, the KDE printing system (CUPS), kssh and others,
and (almost) everything really works find.

I just can encourage you to use this piece of software.

  Heiko

Frankly, I'm astonished it works at all.

<heheheh> Wonders happen! :)

If you followed the mail traffic concerning Michaels KDE a bit, you remember
that he proposed to use the libz.so from Solaris, instead of the libz he has
built. The reason for this libz issue was strange behavior of konsole
concerning tty setting (rows, columns, Ctrl-C, ...).

I didn't check the kpilotDaemon crashes thoroughly yet, but I got the
impression that these regular crashes after each HotSync only appear when
using the Solaris libz. I'll play a little bit around with the two libz's and
their influence on kpilotDaemon.

Regards

  Heiko

Sorry I have no access to a S10/x86 machine but you can use my scripts to
reproduce the results on S10/x86, simple download the script-tarball from

http://leute.server.de/lindig/drupal/?q=node/14

the start script for S10/ultrasparc was run-usr-local-sparcv9.sh you should look
into the script and change (or create new) some private settings. Also you must
change some compiler settings (CFLAGS, CC, ...) in build-base.sh (there is a
case switch for sunos).

KDE has a lot of external dependencies which sources are no longer available at
this time.

Sorry, its not so simple as it looks :)

see attachment it works for me!? Maybe your locale settings are wrong?

I think the best solution for that is a runnable xmms2 on ultrasparc Solaris10,
which will be included in KDE at compile time. I dont know if there any runnable
version of xmms2 on SunRay's?

Sometimes it is possible that old KDE/QT settings makes the new kde-3.5.7
corrupt; thats why we introduce our users to setup a new (fresh) KDE settings.
Here are the commands to get a clean and fresh KDE setup:

     cd ~
     mkdir .backup-kde-3.5.7-solaris10
mv .dt .dtprofile .gnome .qt .xinitrc .backup-kde-3.5.7-solaris10/
mv .gtkrc-kde .kde .kderc .mcop .mcoprc .backup-kde-3.5.7-solaris10/
     mv Desktop .backup-kde-3.5.7-solaris10/

     # and now start KDE-3.5.7 and setup the system

We have created a default .kde-tar file to simplify the fresh installation setup.

We have only sometimes problems with the X-Server which consumes much memory
over the time (maybe a bug in X-Server). Exists a roadmap at SUN for upgrading
the X-Server to current XORG-Server version?

Michael

if it's a sound production issue, that would be aRts and not the player
itself.

have you tried juk with the gstreamer back end for it? i'm not sure if that
ever got out of "beta" quality but it's an option.

similarly, has anyone tried amarok on solaris with the xine or gstreamer
backend?

I have tried it successfully with the xine backend. It will play both
ogg and mp3 files.

Hi,

there is an open bug report about the reason why kcalc
does not compile on Solaris/Sparc atm:

i just fixed this in trunk (kde 4.0).

which brings me to the question: what can we do to get some developers who use
solaris as their primary/preferred system contributing patches to kde's svn
for these sorts of things?

i know that stefan maintains quite a few patches, some of which aren't
appropriate for upstream, but there has got to be more than just him =) i
know i met a few guys at FOSS.in this year who were interested in working on
KDE code from a Solaris perspective .....

Hi Michael,

I packed my KDE sources and Heiko put it on the FTP server so you can download
it :) . I wrote a little README

ftp://ls12-ftp.cs.uni-dortmund.de/outgoing/KDE/3.5.7/README.SRC;type=a

The sources includes my entire KDE-SourceTree plus the kdesvn-build script with
configuration file. I only removed the '.svn' subdirectories which are not
needed because of source tagging (3.5.7).

The sources have some adjustments (mainly the configuration scripts) for 64-bit
environment and some sources files where patched for solaris:
