Lee,
Was that you in Kent Narrows this afternoon about 4 pm across from Harris Crab House? Dark blue hull with furled jib and IMF (red covers)? Beautiful boat on a great fall day.

Gary,

That was me and Alice on her boat.  She is a beauty:

Picture+066.jpg

We were delivering Beats Prozac through Kent Narrows to a marina where she'll be dry-docked for the winter.  No sailing but with the great weather and company it was a most enjoyable day.  We were prepared for a strong current through the Narrows and weren't disappointed.  While waiting for the bridge to open we were lightly motoring into the current yet still going backwards.  I was glad Alice had a big 9.9 outboard on her boat.

My boat isn't as new or pristine as Alice's, but Stan told me that red hulls are faster:

Don't know about rum-fueled yellow hulls.

We do the Narrows easily with our 8hp outboard. My guess is you could
even do it with a 6 but you might be gunning it. We've done it a
couple of times at slack tide but otherwise it's always interesting.

Alice must have gotten the motor mount fixed. Good!

Rob,

It looks like Alice and I both have similar problems.  The motor lift
bar doesn't travel in the middle of the tracks.  One end of the bar is
almost an inch from the track and the other end of the bar is pushing
hard against the track, bending the end.

Thinking the weight of the outboard wasn't evenly distributed on the
motor mount, I moved my outboard as far as I could toward the lose end
but that didn't help.  Silicon lubrication helps a little, but that's
just treating the symptoms instead of the cause.  The tracks are
installed correctly on the boat so the tops and bottoms are the same
distance apart.  With the weight of the motor and me, the boat heels
towards the bending end, but I can't imagine that would cause the motor
mount to slide to one side.  The motor is too heavy to manually center
the lift during operation.

Any ideas?

Lee

Lee,
Well, I've got an old style, yank it up by hand lift, but that doesn't stop me from offering suggestions.  How about a few photos so we can ponder the situation? I got a look at the new lift when I was at GBI on Saturday.  This is the web strap that winds up on a roller?  It attaches to the bar that is cockeyed?  Can that strap slid along the lifting bar?  - rob

Rob,

Yes to all questions. I'll be at a conference this week so it might be
the weekend before I can get some pictures.

The strap can slide along the bar but not far due to the alignment of
the winch and the slot that the strap moves through.  However, if the
winch and strap weren't aligned straight it does seem like it might pull
the motor more to one side.  The strap looks like it's centered on the
bar but it might not take much to pull the whole thing off balance.

Thanks--I think.  Can't think of an easy fix if that's the problem.

Lee,
You mention a bar.  While I've not seen the lift, it was my impression that the motor mounts on a slide (vs. a bar) that sits between the tracks?  I would assume the lift strap attaches to the slide?  - rob

Lee,
Well, I've got an old style, yank it up by hand lift, but  that doesn't
stop me from offering suggestions.  How about a few  photos so we can
ponder the situation? I got a look at the new lift when I  was at GBI on
Saturday.  This is the web strap that winds up on a  roller?  It attaches
to the bar that is cockeyed?  Can that strap  slid along the lifting bar?

Any  ideas?

Lee

That was me and Alice on her boat.  She is a  beauty:

We were delivering Beats Prozac through Kent Narrows  to a marina where
she'll be dry-docked for the winter.  No sailing but  with the great
weather
and company it was a most enjoyable day.  We  were prepared for a strong
current through the Narrows and weren't  disappointed.  While waiting for
the
bridge to open we were lightly  motoring into the current yet still going
backwards.  I was glad Alice  had a big 9.9 outboard on her boat.

My boat isn't as new or pristine as  Alice's, but Stan told me that red

Rob,

I'll take some pictures next week.  This one probably won't help much.  I stole it from the Rhodes22.org website:

A one inch stainless steel bar goes through the sliding motor mount.  The ends of the bar fit into the tracks.

Should read "a one inch diameter stainless steel bar."  The bar is about a foot long.

During our trip I had the need to tie a bowline knot and it did knot come easy.  Alice just sent me this site:

In addition to easy-to-learn knot tying, it has some other cool things I thought some of you might find interesting.

Great site for knot illustrations.  My Dad taught me the bowline knot, he is left handed so that's how I learned.  "snake comes up out of the hole, wraps around the tree and then goes back down the hole".  What is the most common non permanent way to tie a docking line to a post?  The Clove Hitch looks too likely to come undone?  I usually end up putting in several half hitches until I think it won't come undone.

Was Sunday Sail: Now electric motor lift

by Rob Lowe :: Rate this Message:

Lee,
So the bar is something that is added as part of the lift install and is attached to the slide and runs in the same tracks as the slide?  I assume then that the bar is attached to the slide and when the bar is lifted, it pulls the slide up? If this is indeed the case, is the bar firmly attached to the slide so that it cannot shift from side to side?  Having not seen the lift nor having any idea what Stan intended, I'm wondering if the bar really needs to be that long.  If it's only function is to pull up the slide, then why does it have to be long enough to fit in the tracks?

Rummy
You added the lift, thoughts?

You mention a bar.  While I've not seen the lift, it was my impression that
the motor mounts on a slide (vs. a bar) that sits between the tracks?  I
would assume the lift strap attaches to the slide?  - rob

The bars fit into the tracks. They actually keep the lift in the track and
the ends of the bars have bearings which rotate. It's all a tight fit and I
don't see how it can twist.

Lee,
So the bar is something that is added as part of the lift  install and is
attached to the slide and runs in the same tracks as the  slide?  I assume
then that the bar is attached to the slide and when the  bar is lifted, it
pulls the slide up? If this is indeed the case, is the bar  firmly attached to
the slide so that it cannot shift from side to side?   Having not seen the
lift nor having any idea what Stan intended, I'm wondering  if the bar really
needs to be that long.  If it's only function is to  pull up the slide,
then why does it have to be long enough to fit in the  tracks?

You added the lift, thoughts?

Rob,

I'll take some pictures next week.  This one  probably won't help much.  I
stole it from the Rhodes22.org  website:

A one inch stainless steel bar goes through the  sliding motor mount.  The
ends of the bar fit into the  tracks.
