I want to swap out the front suspension on my '82 for one off of an '86 XV700. Does anyone know if the bearing bores and triple tree shaft sizes are the same? I know the '82 has ball bearings and the '86 has tapered roller bearings, so a retro fit kit is in order, if this swap is even doable. Thanks for any information you can give me on this.

Check the part numbers at www.stadiumyamaha.com OEM parts for the years and models involved.

Won't work. The fork tubes are different sizes, so the triple trees are different. That's why I am asking about the bearing surface sizes.

From looking at the diagrams, it appears to be a totally different animal. Try going to www.viragotechforum.com and asking the question. There are a lot of members there and someone will have tried it. Sorry I couldn't be of assistance.

I'm also thinking about finding another 81-83 triple tree and taking measurements. If the spindle is different I'm thinking about removing the spindle and welding it into the 86 triple tree. This way I know it will fit. May be the only way to do the swap.

I am pretty sure they are different. You might try getting in touch with Matt Smith as he seems to have a handle on this sort of thing. His website is www.xvfinishes.com , Be patient, he will get back to you.

Thanks. I'm in no real hurry to get this done so I can afford the time to do the research and modifications to get it done. I like the facts that the 700 front end has larger tubes, built in fork brace and dual disc brakes with two piston calipers. I have the bike dressed out and am going to swap in an 1100 engine so I feel it could use the better brakes and I think it will handle better with the stiffer tubes and brace. I like the smaller fender, too. The only thing it doesn't have is the air assist, but I can fix that. I have the technology. LOL
