Just a reminder to all those who have been publishing all kinds of fantastic music on LAU: please put Ogg or MP3 ID3 tags in your files, stating who you are, the name of the peice, your copyright or copyleft, etc!

The lastest LAU music posts have gone straight into my Sansa Fuze for continued shuffle-mode listening. But I can't tell by looking at the screen when these things come on, whose peice it is.

You've got a valid point there: as much as we are eager to share the newly finished mix, we forget the basics.

But it's difficult to beat the excitement of the moment: you finalize your track, upload it, share it, and a few minutes later, someone (probably) on the other side of your spot in the globe is listening to it and possibly commenting.

Only 12 years ago my main carries of sound were cassette tapes...(still have some olde tapes that need transferring into digital); my main long-distance communication was a letter... the first listeners would be my girlfriend, my neighbors... things do change quickly.

Indeed.  I'm sure I'd prefer to hear your music rather than wait for it
to be tagged right.  ;-)

When I was last asked for tags, I just tagged and uploaded it again ...
once you know how, it's as trivial as changing something about the mix.

If you're not sure if the upload will interfere with concurrent
downloads by others (worst case they get a truncated file), then upload
to a new name and publish that.

I upload with rsync, and as a result a concurrent downloader will get
either the old file or the new file.  It's a neat option, if available.

I know only to well what it's like when you've just finished your latest
work and are excited about getting it heard :)

However, tagging your songs also means that people can look out for
more of your work.

I use easytag, and have a template 'empty' ogg so I can quickly copy
everything except the title.

Say you have a poem and I have a tune.
Exchange them and we can both have a poem, a tune, and a song.

I use Easytag as well when I "officially" upload the tracks to my website (in mp3 format).

I guess posting to this list, personally I see it more like a friendly sharing, rather then official presentation. But I accept the suggestions.

Once we are on the tag-topic, I find it impossible to attach an image that will show in all Linux media players. It seems to me that each of them is 'looking' somewhere else for it.

So, in Easytag I add the image to an .ogg or .mp3 file, then save it.

Vlc would look at my website and download a random image from there.
Other players will not show an image at all (Rhythmbox, Banshee).

Not that this is important and serious topic, but any hints will be welcomed.

BTW, the song "Anticipating" is now properly tagged and zipped:

So post it twice if you have to. Once in the heat of the moment and the second
time with all the details in place. From where I sit, the details help.

I do a little show on the radio here in the Bahamas. The Midnight Freedom
Show.

http://www.y98radio.com/node/178

I play one song with a Free license a night around midnight. (I am trying in
my own small way to promote people doing the Freedom thing on the music and
art side of things.) If I don't see a Free license mentioned, I tend to
ignore the song when I am in my show search mode. If I don't see a general
genre listed, I may not listen if I am in a rush. If I don't see lyrics, and
I am again in a rush, I may pass over a song I like musically better in
favour of another that has the lyrics available. Now if the words are
perfectly clear in the audio itself, this may not be a problem. If I really
like the tune, I may spend a half hour on another day listening again and
again trying to make out the words.

Now this may be totally irrelevant to some of you but it may interest others.

all the best,

drew
