Task Bar real-estate

Dear Developers,

Thank you very much for making this software available. However, I
have one suggestion to make for the Windows version of the gimp program.

When the Gimp program runs, it opens at least 3 windows on start-up.
This is REALLY taking a lot of task-bar real-estate! This bugs me very
much, especially when most program are using tabs to eliminate this
problem.

Could you consider putting all windows into one window - or even move
them into the icon tray on the right? Like, say ... how Photoshop did
it in Windows?

Thank you very for your attention.

Which version are you running? I'm using 2.4.2, and
by now it only opens one window on startup, perhaps
because I've docked all the dialogs I use
regularly, layers, channels, patterns, gradients,
brushes, paths, undo, fonts, and images, into the
toolbox docking area.

1) Well, that's bogus as a criticism of GIMP.

It seems that way to you because the Microsoft
Windows XP taskbar supports only a single row of
taskbar buttons. Other systems allow for many rows
of taskbar buttons. Together with a "hide when not
in use" taskbar, this becomes a non-issue.

Therefore, the problem is not a "GIMP problem" but a
"taskbar implementation" problem.  Perhaps you can
find an aftermarket taskbar with better
functionality.

2) The GIMP is capable of being incredibly resource
intensive. If your taskbar is crowded while you're
using GIMP, you _really_ need to shut down some of
the software you have running in competition with
The GIMP.

That's how the docking area tabs work in GIMP.

There is an available alternative GIMP
implementation, not from the GIMP team,  that does
exactly that.  I can't imagine wanting to do that,
but perhaps you can. Search the archives for a link
to it, or perhaps someone else will offer it to you.

Actually XP supports multiple rows of taskbar buttons just fine if you
make the taskbar higher... drag on its edge (after unlocking it in its
right-click menu)

This has been supported at least since the new shell that came with IE4, if
not by original Windows 95.

Much more convenient to use if the Task bar is at the side of the screen

I think it's GIMPShop.

And let's stop the discussion about GIMPshop here. This is not a
GIMPshop mailing list. Feel free to use it, if yuo want, but let them
handle their own support.

Wonderful, I went looking on every taskbar menu for
such a setting, and instead it is a feature
documented in "blunder upon it" mode. My how I hate
Microsoft.

Thanks, Tor, my taskbar is now two rows high, which
I'm sure I'll rarely need but will find convenient
on the odd occasion.

Not mentioned so far but I use Deweirdifyer. It can be hard to google a site to download from but it's on http://en.addons.pl/gimp.php

Quote:
Deweirdifyer 2.1
Also know as Deweirdifier. A little plugin (addon) for Windows Gimp that gets rid of some of the weirdnesses and annoyances in the Windows version of Gimp. Adds a background window that sits under gimp. It removes the other ten million gimp windows from the task bar and the ALT-TAB menu and takes control of them itself. You can just alt tab off gimp and then alt tab back and all your windows appear as they were before. Only one icon on the taskbar, no more taskbar clutter and clicking that icon brings up *all* the gimp windows. Basically it makes GIMP work more like a single windows application than a bunch of windows. Gimp's modification GimpShop was based on this plugin.

Thanks for posting the Deweirdifyer link. Just having a background
window behind the others will help me. I find seeing the stuff on my
desktop between all the Gimp windows really distracting. Do you happen
to know if this plugin works with Vista?

Please note that the Deweirdifyer program is not supported by the GIMP
developers, and there is no guarantee that it will or won't work now
or in the future. If you have problems with it, complain on the
support channels for that program, not here.

Hi Melisa

I just tried it on my Vista machine and the answer is no - and I think I have a later version than the link I gave but from where I got it I have no idea.

I now what you mean about all the windows.  I have writen a couple of simpler image apps and it's actually easier as a developer to have all those floating bits and most programs do it that way.

the deweirdifier plugin will not work with gimp 2.4 but only with more outdated version (well ...will never work well, but with gimp 2.0 or 2.2 it may works..sort of..)

anyway the deweridifier will transform your gimp in gimpshop, that is a over-bloated, but very outdated , poor and buggy hack.

if you really want/need a imagine window opened at start, and a more PS-like look you have much better solutions

1 go to www.portableapps.com and download the portable version of gimp.
As far i know work well also if installed on the main HD and there, on the gimp page
There you will find the links for 2 plugin that will offer a similar results with less disadvantage

or

2 go here http://www.gimphoto.com/
gimphoto is based on a recent version of gimp (the difference is that included many "extra" scripts and plugins useful for photo retouch in detail

    Based on GIMP 2.4.3

    New Menu Layout like PS

    Faster Menu Rendering

    BIG Toolbox Icon

    Using Vista Gray Themes

    Packed with 20+ plugins

    New brushset + gradientset   )

and there you will findalso "gimp pad" .

(Integrated MDI Window ,   Automatic Always On Top   Automatic Center Dialog Prevent Panel Off Screen    Change GTK Themes Tool )

3
Even better if youare so brave to install a linux partition would be install gimp 2.5
Sure is a unstable beta release, may have some bugs... but is not so  unstable for sure is not so unstable and buggy as gimpshop,( that is almost impossible )

On the other hand Gimpshop is based on a obsolete version of Gimp, while Gimp-2.5 has a lot of new shining things...

Darn. Well I'm not surprised as very little seems to work with Vista.
I really don't mind all the floating windows, I'd just like to have
something solid and blank behind them, instead of my desktop. It's
distracting. Thanks for letting me know.

You could move all your icons from the desktop to the Quick Launch bar.

My earlier post was based on ignorance and let's say a bad nights sleep, my apologies:

To get it to worlk on Vista or with any other version of Gimp other than 2.0 (well at least 2.4 that I'm on) put put the files in the plugin folder as instructed, start Gimp, goto Edit|Setup and change the application name to your gimp version, close Gimp and then restart.

Please stop discussing gimpphoto, gimpshop, deweirdifyer, etc or even
cinepaint, on this list. Discuss them on their own lists or forums.
When/if the authors of these tools wish to make their modifications a
part of the official GIMP sources in a clean way they are free to
cooperate.

(I am the creator and moderator of this list, so no "so who do you
think you are" replies please. No "sour grapes" replies please either,
few if any of the GIMP developers care about "market share" as such.
It's fine if somebody makes a modification to GIMP, after all that's
what the license explicitly allows and encourages. But if they
explicitly avoid cooperation source code -wise (like gimpshop and
cinepaint), let them maintain their own support forums and mailing
lists then.)
