TeamCity build agent anyone?

by Krzysztof Koźmic :: Rate this Message:

One side effect of the split of the projects is that we now have a lot
more build configurations than we used to. Given we only have one
Windows build agent, which is hosted on the same machine that TC server,
no wonder the build takes forever.

Can anyone host an additional build agent to speed things up?

I can. It would take me a bit to get it setup, but it shouldn't be a problem.

I "probably" can.   ANyone want to give me a thumbnail sketch of
what's involved?

(What I have available : a couple  24x7 running/web connected  PCs, to
which I can connect a fixed IP/subdomain name)

Cool,

It's not that difficult actually - you need to download and configure the agent (msi installer) from Castle TC server http://www.castleproject.org:8090/update/agentInstaller.exe , and configure it as outlined here:
http://www.jetbrains.net/confluence/display/TCD4/Setting+up+and+Running+Additional+Build+Agents

CB is a TC hosting with just 3 agents shared by all projects.
We wouldn't benefit from that, we need more dedicated agents.

I actually think the more the better :)

Our current windows agent doesn't rate very well CPU=99 vs Linux box
CPU=395 - http://www.castleproject.org:8090/agents.html
That may be another reason our builds are slow.

Ok, I'm now getting this:

Registering on server: [name: laotzu, ownAddress: 64.253.48.209, ownPort: 9090,
buildId: <not running build>, availableRunners: [simpleRunner], availableVcs: []
]
Upgrade call received from the build server
Will upgrade when become idle
Registered: id:3, authorizationToken:b5cdf3d291096895320914e007de398e
If this is the first time this agent registered on the server make sure it is au
thorized by administrator in the server web UI.

I think is now up to a TC administrator to authorise  your agent.
The agent should be displayed under the "Unauthorized agents".

Authorized, but it seems that we have some config issue, since the
status is Disconnected. Here is what tc is saying about it: Ping
failed, check firewall on agent machine

Since we have unlimited agent licenses I can set one up too if we want more.

FYI, TeamCity doesn't require a separate machine per build agent, you just install the software (using the zip I think) multiple times and set a different name in the config file.

I think we should name the agents something better, so we easily know who is providing the agent if there is an issue. You don't need to rename the computer, just set the name in the properties config file.

I've also contacted the TeamCity guys to find out if we can use their

That won't work, because an agent can only be connected to one server.

James,

First of all - thanks for setting the agent up.

Secondly, I'm getting the error when running on your agent:
/The SDK for the 'net-3.5' framework is not available or not configured.

/Do you have .NET 3.5 SDK installed on that machine?

I think  it would also be beneficial to have a windows mono build
agent, what do you guys think?

Anyone interested in hosting it?

Does anyone deploy using mono on Windows? Wouldn't this mean we'd need another set of build configurations for every project?

Apparently not (I didn't have vs2008 on that machine --- I had .net
v3.5, and thought that would be enough)
The SDK is loading now, but probably won't finish until after I leave
for work, so it may not be fully configured until I get home)
