Tellico 2.0 in Gnome?

I'm really excited to learn that Tellico 2.0 has been released, I've really missed being able to search Amazon.

But I must confess that I've not been able to install it in Mint 7 Gloria since I'm using Gnome.

Is there anyone who could point me in the right direction?  I would really appreciate it.

Not obvious that you need to installing KDE development libraries?

Isn't it obvious that it's not obvious?  ;)

I have been going through all sorts of dependency hell since attempting this, I have installed what ever libraries that it appeared that I needed, yet still more error messages in the cmake process, and still no Tellico 2.0.

What we really need is a .deb package.

A huge number of Tellico users use Gnome, we really need a .deb package, or EASY TO FOLLOW instructions.

Right now I am thinking more and more that cmake simply sucks.

Look there :
http://packages.debian.org/source/sid/tellico

List of all the packages needed to build tellico 2.0. You will need
build-essential on top of them.

> What we really need is a .deb package.

There is one. In Debian. Since you're using a derivative of a derivative
in freeze, there is a delay. If you want the package as soon as it is
ready, either use Debian unstable, or learn how to build it.

I use Gnome. I know a few people who use both, and they don't have a
problem. Don't assume the problems you have with your distribution apply
to everyone.

> Right now I am thinking more and more that cmake simply sucks.

Although I would agree that cmake has a number of flaws, I can't see where
it is the source of your problems.

First, thank you, I will attempt to use the info you have provided to continue my efforts.  If you could point me towards that deb package that you mentioned I would be even more appreciative.

Secondly, you are mistaken.  You say that I should not assume that the problems I am having are common?  Are you kidding me? You are assuming that everyone is an expert code slinger!  How in the world is Linux ever going to progress beyond a niche if the prevailing attitude is that you have to pass a proficiency test before you can use it?

I am not exactly computer illiterate, nor am I completely Linux illiterate.

I admit I'm not a developer like you, but I have installed quite a few programs using the configure - make - make install routine.  But this situation makes me feel like I'm back slogging through Suse 8.

If I am having problems enough to come here asking for help can you imaging people with even less experience trying to use this program?

They are not going to bother, they're going to keep on going and try to find a program that they can actually get working.

I do appreciate you help, and I apologize if I seem snarky this morning, but I have been frustrated by this for days, and having you tell me that the reason I'm having trouble is that I'm just too dumb isn't exactly enhancing my Tellico experience.

No point in that, it probably won't even install. The debian package was
built in a Debian unstable environment with the lastest versions of Qt and
KDE, and depends on them (Qt 4.5.2, KDE 4.3.1, etc.)

I almost answered to that. Why do you think I make Debian packages ? Why
do you think I provided backports for Ubuntu (which I don't use) until
last year ?

Yes, cmake is different from the autotools. Yes it has flaws. Yes, I still
strugle with some aspects of it. That's what packagers are here for, so
everyone doesn't have to do it.

They will stick to the previous, still (almost) perfectly working version
that is available in their repository ?

Do you realise "a program they can actually get working" in your case
would probably be... the previous version of Tellico ?

Seriously, I have never refused to help anyone, and already went as far as
building custom packages. However, when I'm at my 18th consecutive working
day, and someone makes statements showing you don't know how things work
before telling me what I'm supposed to do, I do get irritated.

If you do really want tellico 2.0 asap, try this :

dget -x http://ftp.debian.org/debian/pool/main/t/tellico/tellico_2.0-1.dsc
cd tellico-2.0
dpkg-buildpackage -us -uc

If the build-dependencies are not satisfied, it will tell you which ones
are missing immediately. If they are, it will build the package, and you
will end up with 3 .deb files. You will need the devscripts package,
possibly fakeroot if it's not already installed.

It'd be more helpful if you actually posted the errors that cmake is giving
you. Then we could give you specific help.

The basic instructions are to extract the source tarball, change into the
tellico-2.0/ directory and run

cmake . -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=`kde4-config --prefix`

That tells cmake to configure the current directory and  install Tellico
into the same place that KDE4 is installed...

Then type make and wait for it to compile.
Then type "sudo make install" (without the quotes), enter your root
password, and wait for it to install.
Then type tellico to run it

Regis, I'm sorry.  My reply was rude, and all you were trying to do was help.

I hope you can forgive me, and thanks for your help.

Thanks to all involved.  I managed to get it installed.  I was able to search Amazon for the first time in months.

But I'm afraid I won't be able to rest easy now.  Once I tell my friends that I managed to install it, they'll want help doing it.  Explaining to a newbie how to slog through dependency hell via e-mail and PM is not a prospect that sounds very good right now...

One alternative would be to use Kubuntu and get a start on all the
required libs.  KDE 4.3 is much improved if you suffered through the
earlier versions.  What problems it presents to a dedicated Gnome user,
that I have no idea.
