Gull enthusiasts,

This gull was seen and photographed for 2 days in Marquette, Michigan. I initially called it a Thayer's as it was dark, dark primaries, dark secondary bar and complete solid tail band. The tertials are solid, however there is a bit of checkering on them and the bird is more checkered overall. Also, the bill size has come up in conversation as well. I still think this bird could be within the range of Thayer's, but thought some of you could throw out some opinions.

Any thought would be appreciated,
Thanks!

Here on the north east coast I would initially call this a Thayer's.  However, the head appears too small and rounded and the bill seems short.  Even though the primaries have "J" hooks, the contrast is not great as the primaries appear grayish, not brownish.  The upperparts might be too frosty.  I expect the west coast responses to claim this bird too pale and small headed and the secondary bar not strong enough.

This bird appears consistant with images 263 and 292 in Gulls of North America, Europe and Asia (Olson & Larrson), noting 292's caption is "1st winter Thayer's or Kumlien's Gull.  A tricky individual...."  It is also consistant with images 35A.12 and 35A.35, gull 35 being Kumlien's, in Gulls of the Americas (Howell and Dunn).

In California we'd call that a Thayer's Gull for sure.  Yeah, it's SLIGHTLY pale in the primaries and bill, but I'd call that well within range of Thayer's (based on nothing scientific other than my hunch about natural variation).
