Before J (1989), there was APL (1966); before APL,
there was "A Programming Language" (1962).  And before
"A Programming Language"?  There was "The Description
of Finite Sequential Processes" (1960).

Wherein we read:

        A ? {apple, booty, dust, eye, night}

I guess in 1960 Canada, "booty" didn't have its current connotation.

"Booty" means goods taken by force, and (as I
understand it) even with its current slang meaning
it is not vulgar slang.

BTW, Ken had been living in the US for many years
when he wrote the paper.
